Last but not least: Heal with time

«Heiler von Bern» couldn't wait 20 minutes for the verdict to be announced and, once again, was one step ahead of everyone else.

On Friday, the High Court of the Canton of Bern not only confirmed the sentence against a former music teacher, but made it more severe. The court sentenced him to 15 years in prison for deliberately infecting 16 people with the HI virus. The fact that the man described himself as a "healer" impressed the media so much that they have been calling him the "Healer of Bern" ever since the case came to light. They differentiate, putting the final punctuation mark after "healer" rather than after "Bern". With so much harm that the accused has done to his victims according to the court ruling, this is probably the least they could do.

20 Minuten Online provided some amusement in this otherwise rather disturbing case. At a quarter past eight - around two and a half hours too early - a "Breaking News" banner greeted us from the homepage. Four characters were reserved as a placeholder for the number of years to be added - did the editors assume a dramatically higher sentence? Better safe than sorry.

The message, which was probably published too early in the zeal of online time pressure, disappeared again shortly afterwards. And the worst traces were also soon removed from the mobile app (see below). That's how they are, the online media: fast, dynamic, flexible - and sometimes more up-to-date than the police allow. Baz: Markus Somm now also publisher

Markus Somm will serve not only as editor-in-chief but also as publisher of the Basler Zeitung. At the same time, he will join the board of directors of Baz Holding. The company’s current chairman of the board, Filippo Leutenegger, is stepping down from his position.

The reason for Leutenegger's resignation is his election to the Zurich City Council. The new Chairman of the Board of Directors of BaZ Holding will be CEO Rolf Bollmann, as announced by Basler Zeitung Medien (BZM) on Friday. In addition, SVP National Councilor Christoph Blocher will remain on the board, which has been slimmed down to three members, as a representative of the shareholders.Six other personalities - with one exception, all from the Basel area - are leaving the board of directors. According to the announcement, the changes will come into effect on May 1.

Back in the black

Leutenegger's departure from management coincides with the completion of years of drastic reorganization and restructuring at BZM. The company, which had fallen into serious financial difficulties, is now back in the black and on a sound financial footing, according to the press release. The Baz as the "leading daily newspaper in the region with national appeal" has thus been saved. In the future, BZM will concentrate on publishing the Basler Zeitung and "Baz kompakt," which was launched in February. All other
Activities were sold or - such as the unprofitable newspaper printing plant - discontinued. Today, BZM still has 158 full-time positions in the editorial and publishing departments, according to the press release. The management will now also be adapted to the simple business model. In addition to Baz Holding, BZM also includes its subsidiaries National Zeitung and Basler Nachrichten. In the future, their board of directors will consist of Rolf Bollmann as chairman, Markus Somm and publishing director Sabine Galindo.

Leutenegger brought in as reorganizer

FDP National Councilor Filippo Leutenegger had been brought to Basel as a reorganizer in December 2011. At that time, the Basler Zeitung was taken over for a second time after 2010 by Tito Tettamanti, this time by his newly founded Medienvielfalt Holding. In July 2013, Christoph Blocher officially joined Baz-Holding by taking a 20 percent stake. Markus Somm was appointed editor-in-chief of the Basler Zeitung in August 2010. At the time, suspicions had arisen that Christoph Blocher was involved with Basler Zeitung. (SDA)

Serranetga: Campaign for Samsung Galaxy S5

Samsung Switzerland is launching an integrated campaign with a digital heart to mark the sales launch of the Galaxy S5. Zurich-based advertising agency Serranetga is responsible for the concept and implementation.

Samsung's new flagship cell phone, the Galaxy S5, has been on the shelves since Friday. The campaign accompanying the launch revolves around the first unforgettable experiences with the new Galaxy S5. From the first touch to the first photo, the first text message, the first tweet and the first run to the first shower, all the essential "first moments" between people and smartphones are brought to life.

The communication strategy developed by Serranetga combines all communication channels in a cross-media approach and relies on a high level of interactivity and emotionally packaged content. During the pre-launch phase, customers in seven stores in Switzerland had the opportunity to take a look at the devices and experience the first touch. At the same time, various social media activities were used to create anticipation for the new cell phone. POS campaigns are now being held in Zurich and Bern to mark the launch, which are being streamed directly into customers' living rooms via live banners. In addition to a national poster campaign, we can look forward to various other campaigns in the coming weeks: whether guerrilla, at the POS or via social media - the feeling of the first time should be made as tangible as possible. Protest in front of Tamedia shareholders

About 100 employees and supporters took part in a rally on Friday before Tamedia’s shareholders’ meeting in Zurich, which was organized by Impressum and the Syndicom union.

They called for "Investments instead of dividends!" because if the 42.2 million Swiss francs proposed by the Board of Directors for distribution were invested in the company, all savings programs would be unnecessary. The reduction of around 50 full-time positions in Winterthur, Bülach, Stäfa, Lausanne, Geneva and Bussigny announced at the beginning of the year could be dispensed with completely, and in the case of redundancies a social plan could be negotiated at eye level with those affected and the associations, instead of being ordered by the management, as is the company's tradition of social partnership.

Unbenannt-1_19

Thus, at the Tamedia shareholders' general meeting, Imprint and Syndicom proposed not to pay out the dividends and to invest them instead in jobs as well as in the quality of the products. As expected from the ownership and voting structure, the motion was clearly rejected (1'600 yes, 21'500 abstentions and 9.8 million no). A second motion, which demanded that the compensation principles of the Executive Board be rejected and that their salaries and remuneration be made independent of profits, was far less clearly rejected with 512'000 abstentions, 56'000 votes in favor, and 9.25 million votes against: for the first time, dissatisfaction with the greedy business practices of the Executive Board became manifest.

Imprint and Syndicom will continue to campaign for job preservation and fight the once again announced savings programs of CHF 62 million in three years, according to the statement. In the letter, the associations call on Tamedia to "finally negotiate again with the social partners." Particularly in view of the profit shares now being distributed, the announced layoffs must be withdrawn and solutions sought that would do justice to the economic success of the media group and ensure it for the future.

Worldwide Dove campaign with music from Zurich

Following the huge success of the latest Dove campaign, «Beauty Sketches,» the follow-up campaign, «Beauty Patches,» is now being launched. The music for the campaign comes from Switzerland.

With the "Beauty Sketches" campaign from 2013, Dove redefined the image of women in advertising. The video went around the world, won the Titanium Grand Prix in Cannes and generated over 163 million views on YouTube.

Now the care brand from Unilever is presenting the official follow-up campaign: Various short films show how women find new self-confidence thanks to the revolutionary Dove "Beauty Patch". The surprising end to these stories is intended to encourage women in their self-confidence and show that true beauty begins in the mind. "Beauty is a state of mind".

The music comes from Switzerland. In close collaboration with the advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather, Sao Paulo (Agency of the Year - Cannes Lions 2013), the Zurich-based sibling trio Great Garbo composed the music for the beauty campaign. The intimate and atmospheric music emphasizes the emotional journey of the protagonists on their way to more self-confidence and charisma.

"We are delighted that we were able to compose the music for these moving films after the great success of the previous campaign. This shows the agencies' trust in our work. The collaboration with the top-class creative teams in LA, Sao Paulo and New York was intensive and enriching. The result is a very inspiring campaign." Diego, Nora and Lionel Vincent Baldenweg from Great Garbo on the new Dove campaign.

Ringier secures majority stake in Le Temps

For half a year, the media companies Ringier and Tamedia had been searching for a buyer for the French-Swiss daily newspaper Le Temps. After no suitable offer was received, Ringier acquired the long-established newspaper.

The two media houses Ringier and Tamedia each previously held a 46.2 percent stake in Le Temps. They were both no longer satisfied with this, as they saw better prospects for the newspaper with a strong owner. When the intention to sell was announced at the beginning of October, they already announced that they would negotiate among themselves about a takeover of the title if no convincing offer was submitted (Werbewoche.ch reported). This case now apparently occurred.

Le Temps is the only national newspaper in French-speaking Switzerland. Despite a rather small circulation of 39'716 copies and 109'000 readers, it is of great importance. The outcry in French-speaking Switzerland about the intention to sell was correspondingly loud. Since October, several candidates have expressed interest, including the watch manufacturer Jean-Claude Biver or the business newspaper L'Agefi. The NZZ refrained from submitting a bid despite the similarity with Le Temps. In Geneva, the "Cercle des Amis du Temps" association was founded, which was joined by over 700 members. This association also submitted a purchase offer, which was the last to remain in the running.

"Matter of the heart" for Ringier

After a careful review of the dossiers submitted, Ringier decided to submit a takeover bid itself. On Thursday evening, the contracts for Ringier's takeover of Tamedia's stake were signed. The first information leaked out on Friday morning. Shortly after 10 a.m., Ringier and Tamedia announced the change of hands in a media release and issued an invitation to a media conference at short notice. There, Ringier CEO Marc Walder spoke of a "good day for Ringier". They are ready to invest, Walder said, and described the takeover as a "matter of the heart". From publisher Michael Ringier, Walder delivered the words that Ringier believes in the future of the press.

Leadership not in Zurich

Walder stressed that the newspaper would not be managed from Zurich. Ringier is expanding in French-speaking Switzerland, where the media company already owns L'illustré, L'Hebdo, TV8 and Edelweiss. Now that Le Temps is joining Ringier Romandie, the newspaper should be able to benefit from "far-reaching synergies at the editorial level, in marketing as well as in advertising," according to the media release. Whether staff will be cut remained open. Walder said it was too early to say shortly after the takeover negotiations. Talks have been held with the "Cercle des Amis du Temps" and will be continued. Ringier wants to remain the majority shareholder, but is open to the association taking a stake in the newspaper, Walder said. Ringier now holds 92.5 percent of the paper. The remainder is shared by Geneva banker Claude Demole (3 percent), the Le Temps staff association (2.4 percent) and the publisher of French newspaper Le Monde (2.1 percent).

Predominantly positive reactions

The majority of reactions in French-speaking Switzerland were good. The "Cercle des Amis du Temps" regretted the sale to Ringier. Valérie Boagno, Director of Le Temps SA, expressed relief that the exhausting six months of uncertainty were over. The staff welcomed the takeover, but warned that the workforce could not be reduced any further without jeopardizing the quality of the newspaper. The journalists' professional association Imprint agreed. The president of the Swiss Media Publishers Association, Hanspeter Lebrument, spoke of the "best solution" for the newspaper. Also the Vaudois State Councillor
Pascal Broulis described the acquisition as "good news". Geneva State Councilor Pierre Maudet took "note" of the purchase.

"We are reluctant to part with our stake in Le Temps," Tamedia publisher and Chairman of the Board Pietro Supino is quoted as saying in a media release. However, a takeover by Tamedia would have led to a lengthy procedure with the Competition Commission. Tamedia already owns Le Matin, Tribune de Genève, and 24 heures in French-speaking Switzerland. Basel Tageswoche parts ways with Urs Buess

Urs Buess is leaving the Basler Tageswoche. Buess served as co-editor-in-chief at the publication’s launch in October 2011 and most recently held the position of editorial director. The separation was by mutual agreement, according to a statement posted Thursday on Tageswoche.ch.

Irreconcilable differences with the editorial and management teams had led to the separation, Thomas Gelzer announced in the editorial blog "Mittendrin". Gelzer is chairman of the board of Neue Medien Basel, the publisher of Tageswoche. Buess, who had previously served on the editorial boards of Tagesanzeiger and Basler Zeitung, was co-chief editor of Tageswoche until May 2013. He was then appointed journalistic director. He also took a seat on the newly formed Publishers' Committee. The reason for the reorganization of the editorial management almost a year ago was to push the digital business. At that time, Dani Winter became the new editorial director. Remo Leupin remained head of print. The printed edition of Tageswoche has been published in a new look since the end of March. The Tageswoche hit the headlines in February because of falsified circulation figures. A circulation trick prompted the Basel public prosecutor's office to initiate a police investigation on suspicion of fraud. (SDA)

Federal Court: Swiss Post logo not worthy of protection

Swiss Post cannot register the word "ePostSelect" in black letters on a yellow background as a trademark worthy of protection. This was decided by the Federal Supreme Court. The combination of words and the design of the logo lacked any particular originality.

Swiss Post wanted to offer a whole range of goods and services under the ePostSelect trademark: They range from programs for electronic data processing devices, voice and data transmission to the rental of computer software and the design of websites. However, the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property, which is responsible for trademark registrations, rejected Swiss Post's application.

Assuming originality

The purpose of a trademark is to distinguish the goods and services of one company from those of other companies. Signs that are in the public domain are excluded from trademark protection. This is provided for in the Trademark Protection Act. The Swiss Post stated that the combination of the three elements "e", "Post" and "Select" was a neologism. It is combined with graphic elements, namely the bold marking of "Select" and the representation in the color black on a yellow background. All in all, this sign forms a "complex word/image combination". In the context of the goods and services, the combination is not merely descriptive or imposing. Anyone wishing to understand ePostSelect would have to make a "considerable effort of thought".

No protection for common goods

The Federal Supreme Court takes a different view. The combination "ePost" is "readily understood in the obvious sense as electronic mail". The services associated with e-mail are part of the public domain. Furthermore, according to the Federal Supreme Court, the word select is commonly used as an English adjective, in particular with the meaning of exquisite and exclusive, which is merely laudatory. However, according to the law, a trademark should go beyond an advertising message. Conclusion of the Federal Supreme Court: The sign submitted by Swiss Post is dominated by the word combination ePostSelect, which belongs to the public domain, and does not contain any original design elements. It can therefore not be registered as a trademark. Swiss Post will continue to use it without protection, as the media office explained on request. (SDA)

Last but not least: Classifieds big time

Clever Print Advertising: These classified ads also sell kitchens on the side.

Revenues from print ad sales are shrinking - bright spots are welcome. Bright spots that not only appeal to the target audience, but are suddenly spread virally and admired. Thanks to Creative Director Felipe Salazar, we suddenly know that you can buy the best kitchens in the world at Corona. Or at least the best in Colombia. It doesn't really matter, because we probably won't become customers anyway. But the full-page ad is innovative nonetheless.

At first glance, it looks like a normal classifieds page of the newspaper in question. However, the small advertisements are arranged in such a way that the 3D effect makes a kitchen visible. Text: "You'll find the kitchen you're looking for at Corona." Da ganas comprarse una nueva cocina! Or as they say in this country: Only an advertisement can do that. (hae)
