Blond Publishing: Tobias Trevisan joins L'Officiel

Tobias Trevisan is joining Blond Publishing—the publisher of the Swiss edition of the French fashion and lifestyle magazine L’Officiel—as a partner. He will assume the role of chairman of the company’s board of directors.

With Trevisan, Blond Publishing has gained an experienced publishing manager as a partner. Trevisan has held positions of responsibility in the Swiss media landscape as publishing director of the Sonntagszeitung and Tages-Anzeiger newspapers and as head of the NZZ newspapers division. With the successful relaunch of the NZZ am Sonntag, he was able to make a name for himself beyond the country's borders. He followed the call of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), where he worked for nine years in Frankfurt as Chairman of the Management Board. Since this spring, he has been building up a group of companies under the Peakrgroup brand with his partners in Germany and Switzerland, which focuses on the development of demand-driven digital business models in the areas of careers and further education.

We feel that his commitment confirms that we are on the right track." Tobias Trevisan is also looking forward to the collaboration: "In my many years in the publishing industry, I have not often come across a project that has been launched on the market as successfully as L'Officiel in Switzerland in such a short space of time. Sandra, Stefan and Oliver have done a great job. They deserve my trust. I am delighted to be able to work with them and support them in further developing the magazine and the L'Officiel brand in Switzerland."

Südostschweiz: New concept, new layout

On Tuesday, January 20, the daily newspaper *Südostschweiz* will be published for the first time with a new concept and layout. The relaunch is part of Somedia’s media brand strategy.

In the future, the name Südostschweiz will stand for the four channels newspaper, radio, television and online, but they will continue to be produced independently. It is more than a complete overhaul that Südostschweiz is undergoing with its three editions for Graubünden, Glarus and Gaster& See. It is almost a new newspaper that will appear for the first time tomorrow, Tuesday. At the heart of the concept, which was largely developed by the editorial team itself, is the effort to find a sustainable response to the rapidly changing market conditions.

The new layout

The previous layout

According to the statement, Somedia is convinced that it can achieve this with a product that, on the one hand, provides more background and classification on the most important news and focuses more on social issues. Both the relevance and the user value are to be increased. However, the focus will remain on reporting from the region. However, this is also to be deepened: fewer topics, but these are to be illuminated, described and commented on from several sides. Consequently, the two newspaper alliances are no longer divided into a regional and a national alliance, but into a news alliance and a life alliance. The extensive omission of news items that were already available free of charge on all channels the day before is compensated for in the digital edition of Südostschweiz with active elements that lead directly to the corresponding section on suedostschweiz.ch. The launch of a multimedia app is scheduled for the end of March.

A color system facilitates navigation through the newspaper. This is given great weight by a novel tiling principle already on the front page. The congenial graphic implementation of the concept comes from the kitchen of the Berlin layout studio Einhorn Solutions, which was also responsible for the redesign of Die Welt, among other things.

The new Südostschweiz is the first step in the new media brand strategy of the Somedia media house, which also includes Werbewoche. The newspaper, radio, television and online channels will be united to form the Südostschweiz media family by the end of March - in parallel with the move into the new media house in Chur. This will also appear visually as a single entity. Planning for the content of the four sub-media takes place at the central news desk in Chur.

Knackeboul leaves Joiz

Joiz host David Kohler, also known as Knackeboul, is setting out for new horizons. After nearly four years and 175 episodes, the Bernese dialect rapper will host his show «Knack Attack» for the last time on the youth-oriented social TV channel on January 26, 2015.

In the past almost four years, Knackeboul presented his full range of skills week after week: Freestyler, rapper, beatboxer, entertainer, presenter and beamer. Numerous personalities took a seat on the multi-talker's sofa and presented their freestyle skills: for example, CVP President Christophe Darbellay, musician DJ Bobo, sports presenter Rainer Maria Salzgeber or Melanie Winiger, Viktor Giacobbo and Mike Müller.

The newspaper Der Bund selected his Beatbox session with Beardyman The show was also nominated for a Prix Walo in 2013. Now Knackeboul has decided to leave Joiz. Knackeboul: "Joiz was a great experimental field for me and I'm grateful for the opportunities I got here, but now it's time for me to move on and dedicate myself to new projects, especially musical ones".

Alexander Sautter, Head of Program: "With Knackeboul, we are leaving a creative multi-talent who has contributed a great deal to the success of Joiz. I very much regret Knack's departure and wish him all the best for the future. Thanks to his musical activities, he will certainly be back on joiz soon, then simply as a guest." To mark Knackeboul's farewell, a one-hour special show with numerous surprise guests will be broadcast on January 26 at 18.30h.

Last but not least: Scenes from everyday agency life

An agency employee spent a year documenting his daily work routine through photography—using miniature figures staged in typical agency scenarios. You’re sure to recognize them.

Derrick Linn from Resource/Ammirati in Columbus, Ohio has always been fascinated by tiny things and small details, as he once told a journalist from Daily Mail told. That's why he chose miniature figures to express the emotions of everyday office life. The pictures show moments that everyone immediately recognizes - whether they work in an agency or not. (sis)

Tsüri goes online

The Tsüri.ch platform now regularly features stories from the city of the same name.

In 2015 and 2016, readers will be provided with critical, committed and independent journalism at regular intervals on the new platform, announced a press release on Sunday evening.

Tsüri.ch four reports (on magic mushrooms, homeless people in Zurich, ICF and the Palestine Grill on Langstrasse) as well as a commentary on the Reclaim The Streets demonstration in December. The makers of Die Perspektive are behind the project.

NZZ Group in the red

Etienne Jornod, Chairman of the Board of Directors, comments in the Sonntagszeitung on the media company’s operating results for 2015. He also comments on the decision to have considered Markus Somm for the position of editor-in-chief.

Due to the intended closure of the print shop and the related depreciation on buildings and production equipment, a loss will result for 2014. This was stated by Etienne Jornod, Chairman of the Board of Directors, in an interview with the Sonntagszeitung. He did not give any figures. For 2013, the NZZ Group had still reported a net profit of CHF 24.9 million.

The 2014 operating result was in line with expectations, Jornod explained. The decline in reader market revenues in the print business was more than compensated for by NZZ's digital business. In 2014, subscribers were gained for the first time in a long time, said Jornod. Admittedly, the net increase is still small, but it should mark a trend reversal.

With regard to the print shop in Schlieren, Jornod stated that it was not true that it was profitable. Costs were already around 40 percent above the market level. As costs are likely to rise further in view of developments in the newspaper printing market, the NZZ Group is taking action before the problems worsen.

In the interview, Jornod also defended the decision to have examined Markus Somm as a candidate for the editorial management of the NZZ. Various personalities belonging to the FDP and very close to the NZZ had recommended this to him. If Somm is characterized as a national conservative, he shares this only to a very limited extent.

However, the editor-in-chief of the Basler Zeitung, in which SVP strategist Christoph Blocher has a stake, did not meet several criteria and the nomination did not fall on him, Jornod said without giving details. He immediately admitted that he had not expected such strong reactions. (SDA)

Personal letter from Heidi

Heidi is personally reaching out to potential sponsorship partners for her new film.

The new Heidi film will be released in cinemas around Christmas this year. Not only tourism, but also various Swiss companies and brands should be able to benefit from the release of the film, according to a press release on Friday. They are therefore being asked to contribute to the financing of the production as well as the national and international promotion of the film through a partnership.

As conventional sponsorship dossiers can easily get lost in the post and are not looked at immediately, a special measure should arouse the interest of those responsible for marketing. In this case, who better to do this than Heidi herself, in the form of a handwritten, personal letter, written with childlike anticipation of the film and with a special invitation to watch the trailer for the film exclusively and before anyone else?

In her letter, Heidi uses the recipient's first name, says that the film could be of interest to their business and reveals a personal, four-digit code that the recipient can use to access the film. Discover-heidi.ch access to the teaser trailer. The microsite also contains suggestions for possible partnerships as well as contact details for the person responsible for distributing the film in Switzerland: The Walt Disney Company.

In addition to the letter, the recipients also received a teaser poster, which turned the letter into a package and is intended to further strengthen interest in the content. Even before the official trailer release on January 15, the first potential partners expressed their interest in a collaboration, according to the press release.

Responsible at The Walt Disney Company: Johnny Forrer (Marketing Manager). Responsible at Zodiac Pictures: Lukas Hobi (Producer). Responsible at Clou: Albi Christen (Creative Director), Marcel Huwiler (Art Director), Angela Brancato (Graphic Design). Study: Journalistic freedom restricted

The increasing pressure on working conditions for journalists in Switzerland is restricting freedom of the press. This is the conclusion reached by a study conducted by the University of Fribourg.

The study concludes that dependence on commercial interests poses a threat to the future of the profession. The study recently published by the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) is based on a survey of 1128 journalists from the impressum professional association on working conditions and freedom of expression.

According to the study directors, the results clearly show that the majority of Swiss media professionals perceive an increase in economic pressure in their profession. This is particularly true for daily newspapers in German-speaking Switzerland. The situation is slightly better for journalists in French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino.

Largely lacking self-criticism

"There is hardly any time left for in-depth research and maintaining networks," the summary of the study states. The result is a decline in journalistic diligence and a more superficial treatment of topics.

Freedom of reporting is also restricted by the so-called media crisis. Overall, reports about advertisers that could be damaging to their image are rarely published.

In addition, there is generally little reporting on media policy issues - and when there is, it is usually influenced by the interests of one's own company. It is customary to report on positive developments at one's own company, but to exclude negative developments.

Repeated call for Gav

For Urs Thalmann, Managing Director of the Impressum journalists' association, the study confirms his observations: "The frequent restructuring in editorial offices leads to great uncertainty and massive pressure," he said. This situation is closely linked to the fact that in German-speaking Switzerland
and Ticino no longer have a collective employment agreement (CEA).

Central Secretary Dominique Diserens adds with a view to French-speaking Switzerland that the CLA in French-speaking Switzerland provides considerable support for working conditions. Both companies and journalists benefit from this. However, the increased economic pressure is also clearly noticeable in editorial offices in French-speaking Switzerland.

Not all bad

Verena Vonarburg, Director of the Swiss Media Association, also does not deny "that journalists have to do more today than in the past". The pressure has increased because the media houses have to make do with significantly lower revenues, she told SDA when asked. However, media professionals in smaller editorial offices can also produce good, critical journalism.

"The OFCOM-sponsored study is unfortunately politically colored and based on a narrow factual basis," Vonarburg continued. She referred to a Federal Council report on the media situation from the end of 2014. It states that Switzerland is one of the countries with the greatest media diversity. (SDA)

Rhaetian Railway in ABB clothing

ABB and the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) are highlighting their nearly century-long partnership with a unified visual identity: Starting today, one train set will no longer run in red, but in white.

The Rhaetian Railway is redesigning the interior and exterior in line with the ABB branding, as announced in a press release on Friday. The train will run exclusively between Landquart and Davos during the World Economic Forum WEF and then on the entire Graubünden rail network.

The redesigned composition, which for the first time features an additional logo alongside that of the Rhaetian Railway, is part of the Allegra fleet of 15 multiple units delivered by Stadler Rail in 2010/2011. As a subcontractor, ABB developed the drive package specifically for the requirements of the Rhaetian Railway. It had to be adapted to the steep gradients, the high alpine climate and a power grid with direct current and alternating current.

Complaint against 20 Minuten rejected

An SDA news report published 20 minutes ago regarding false incentives in disability insurance for young people is not objectionable. The Press Council has dismissed a complaint against it. The image of a drinking party chosen by the editorial staff is also acceptable.

The decision of the Press Council was published on Friday. It concerns the Article "IV pension pays more than work".which appeared in the commuter newspaper 20 Minuten on February 4, 2014. As an illustration, the 20 Minuten editorial team had chosen a picture of a drunken party among young people.

The report was based on an OECD research report on false incentives of the IV, which made it more worthwhile for young people in Switzerland to draw a pension than to work. Overall, Switzerland is doing too little to keep people with mental health problems in the labor market.

The association Selbstbestimmung.ch filed a complaint against the article with the Swiss Press Council. The article violates the prohibitions on concealing important elements of information and on discrimination, as set out in the "Declaration of the Duties and Rights of Journalists". to write them down.

In particular, the text does not mention the inadequate institutional cooperation and the lack of commitment on the part of employers, the OECD's main points of criticism. It refers one-sidedly to their criticism of the pension system. This and the picture suggest that mentally impaired people would rather party at the expense of taxpayers than work.

Important discretion

The Press Council rejects the complaint. In its opinion, it states that the article was not about an integral reproduction of the research report, but about the aspect of young mentally ill people. A journalist is free to report on a topic in his or her own way. This discretion is an essential part of the freedom of the press.

The choice of illustration was also at the editorial discretion. The picture may represent a not entirely unproblematic and probably also provocative generalization, and also express a critical attitude towards young people in general. However, this was not to be criticized in the context of the chosen focus of the report. (SDA)
