Media sites on the rise

The September data from Net Mextrix Audit show Newsnetz.ch as a major newcomer: appearing in the statistics for the first time and immediately ranking seventh.

The Net Metrix Audit web statistics, which are published every month on the sixth working day, measured 175 websites in September. After the most-visited sites Bluewin, Search.ch and Local, Blick online remains the top media site with 1.58 million unique clients, followed by Newsnetz (new), NZZ online and 20 Minuten.ch.
Media sites ranked 6 to 10
The September statistics are also interesting from a media-specific point of view because Newsnetz, the quasi-merger of Tages-Anzeiger, Basler Zeitung and Berner Zeitung, was listed on the Internet for the first time and already ranks behind Blick online with a gap of just 85,000 unique clients (see linked interview). Although not quite at the top, media sites still occupy positions six to ten. Just a few years ago, it was said that the media industry had missed the boat on the Internet. The figures show that it has caught up.
In a comparison of page visits with the previous month of August, Das Magazin (+43.3%), the industry portal Persoenlich.com (+40.3%) and Handelszeitung online (+35.2%) recorded the strongest increases, followed by Cash/Borsalino.ch (+28.9%), Bilanz (+24%) and Le Temps (+21.5%). In view of the current economic crisis, it is not surprising that business titles are in greater demand. Blick online (-0.8%) and Sonntagszeitung.ch (-2.2%) lost page visits slightly, while sf.tv (-13.9%) and Facts.ch (-20.5%) lost a lot.
Comparison with previous year lags behind
The statistics put the positive results that Swiss Television recently reported in the media into perspective. SF compared its current September figures with the same month last year and came up with 64,600 more visits per day on sf.tv. On average, the three main platforms were able to increase their visits by 50 percent compared to the previous year.
Performance problems at Facts.ch
The makers of Facts.ch, the brand of the former and only Swiss-German news magazine selig, which has been running since September 2007, have no definitive explanation for the conspicuous drop in traffic.
What is certain is that the portal had performance problems in September and was no longer able to cope with the number of articles in the database. Since its launch, the platform has processed 1.46 million articles. "It crashed at 1.3 million," says project manager Christoph Lüscher. Things will look better again in October. Lüscher estimates that all platforms that have a lot of content online are heavily dependent on Google and are therefore more susceptible to glitches. The search engine giant seems to change the weightings in its algorithm much more frequently than before.
The strong increase in traffic to the magazine, on the other hand, is mainly due to the launch of an in-house newsletter, which is used to advertise more to the public. In addition, the magazine stories have recently been teased on the Tagi website.

Last but not least: Vital surfing into old age

Who would have thought it: According to a new study by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), using the Internet has a positive effect on brain function. Various tests have apparently confirmed the positive effects of Internet use, particularly among older adults.

Who would have thought it: according to a new study by the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), Internet use has a positive effect on brain performance. Various tests have apparently confirmed the positive effects of web use, particularly in older people. In particular, surfing the web counteracts the reduced brain capacity that occurs after a certain age. Searching the Internet is an extremely suitable training to prevent such signs of ageing, the scientists write in commenting on their study.
The findings are particularly encouraging for middle-aged and older people. They could use surfing the web as a training method to prevent a later reduction in the performance of their own brain in good time, CNN quotes UCLA professor and study leader Gary Small.
"Surfing the internet is certainly something that poses some challenges for users," Alexander Maye, research associate at the Institute of Neurophysiology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, told Pressetext when confronted with the results of the study. In principle, some activities are more demanding on the brain than others. For example, using the web requires a minimum level of orientation and quick comprehension. Perhaps in future, instead of sending your children to football training or ballet lessons, you should chain them in front of the computer as a preventative measure.

Newsnetz: New advertising formats meet with approval

The conclusion of a survey conducted on Newsnetz: Visitors respond well to the ad formats. The billboard format is attracting a surprisingly high level of attention.

The news network operators conducted a survey on the effectiveness of online advertising on Bazonline.ch, Bernerzeitung.ch and Tagesanzeiger.ch. The results are impressive: The Newsnetz advertising formats are well received by visitors and the placed advertising messages are strongly remembered, according to a Tamedia statement. The advertising effectiveness was examined by the media agency MediaCom using the online advertising campaign of the car manufacturer Audi for the Audi S3 Sportback model.
In addition to the highly regarded Rectangle and Maxiboard, the new Billboard format surprisingly received a lot of attention in the survey (see illustration). This took the form of an interactive "car configurator" with which visitors could adjust their own personal Audi S3 Sportback. More than 50 percent of the portal visitors were able to remember the billboard format, although it only becomes visible when scrolling. In addition, the billboard format was rated best in terms of likeability due to its size and interactivity. In contrast, the two formats placed at the top of the page, Maxiboard and Rectangle, were remembered by 60 and 73 percent respectively.
For the study, 2,762 visitors to the newsnet aged between 14 and 74 were surveyed. The first survey wave took place before the Audi campaign began between August 11 and 17, 2008. The second survey wave was conducted during the campaign between August 27 and 31, 2008. The proportion of respondents who could recall an online campaign supported by Audi was more than twice as high in the second survey wave, at 29 percent, than in the first wave, at 14 percent. By contrast, the figures for the second most frequently mentioned car manufacturer changed only marginally, rising from 15 to 16 percent in the second wave.

Max provides movement in the office

The Neue Lgk is heading into the second round for KPT with its witty coach, Max.

KPT's online insurance has more than 120,000 satisfied policyholders. KPT is a leader in the field of online insurance and has already received several awards for its innovative strength. A year ago, Neue Lgk launched Trainer Max for KPT. The witty coach is intended to demonstrate the insurance company's expertise in the online sector in an entertaining way. Over 200,000 different visitors were counted on the microsite Einzeltraining.ch, and more than 12,000 people registered for training in an eight-stage registration process. The average time spent on the site was over 7 minutes. The site has won silver and bronze at the Best of Swiss Web Award, gold and platinum at the Dialog Marketing Award and bronze from the Swiss ADC.
Neue Lgk is now entering a second round with the campaign. This is aimed at people in the office. Over 70 percent of all Swiss people work in the 3rd sector, i.e. mainly at a desk. Every third person complains of neck pain, back pain or tense shoulders. Max's office training program offers 13 exercises to combat tension and pain at the workplace. The exercises have been developed in collaboration with a doctor and a fitness center. All exercises are demonstrated and commented on by trainer Max himself. A moving Max can be scanned and clicked on via mouse rollover. If desired, Max can also rotate on his axis. The display fills the screen on small monitors and, depending on the connection, provides a very high picture quality, as the capacity of the line is checked before each transmission and films are sent in optimum quality after this check.
Neue Lgk already worked with Netvertising Zurich on the development of the first microsite Einzeltraining.ch. Now, the office training program amazes with a live effect for which dozens of film modules are seamlessly joined together. "This gives the impression that trainer Max is standing in front of a webcam and is looking after the user in question," says CD André Benker, who is delighted with the new Lgk. The agency worked with Solid & Hallerfilm and director Rainer Binz to produce the office world and the associated video modules. Due to the trilingual nature of the microsite, a total of 230 sequences had to be recorded.
The poster campaign quotes exercises from the microsite and shows the props required for them. In the banner area, the tool for selecting the exercises is shown again: Trainer Max, who is x-rayed and thus demonstrates where it can hurt during a strenuous day at the office. The office training program already recorded over 30,000 visits during the launch phase.

Airport Media Award: Bronze for Swiss agency

The Swiss agency McKinivan Moos won bronze at this year's Airport Media Award. The prize is awarded annually for the best airport advertising in German-speaking countries.

The Swiss agency McKinivan Moos won bronze at this year's Airport Media Award. The Cham-based advertising agency installed an elaborate light installation with images of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra for Credit Suisse at Zurich Airport. Accompanied by the sounds of Antonín Dvo?ák's 7th Symphony, the creation drew attention to the bank's musical commitment to top orchestras and music festivals.
The first prize in the switched campaigns category went to the guerrilla campaign "Geddjur Karäsiggst" / "Graitoffers Adsiggst" (Get your Car at Sixt / Great offers at Sixt) by Jung von Matt/Neckar, which was staged at Stuttgart Airport in January of this year. Silver went to the agency Ogilvy & Mather, Vienna, for a plastic box branded by Casino Wien at the security checkpoint at Vienna Airport. Passengers placed money, keys and valuables on the mini roulette table as a "game insert" for screening.
The Airport Media Award was presented for the eleventh time this year, for the second time under the umbrella of the organizer Initiative Airport Media. It is awarded each autumn to the best airport advertising in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The award is hosted by the IAM airports in the major agency cities on a rotating basis at the turn of the year. This year's award ceremony took place on October 13 at Munich Airport.

Striking

This fall, Annemarie Wildeisen is back in the kitchen, conjuring up hearty, wild, and fiery dishes for the 338,000 readers of *Kochen*. The October and November issues are previewed by four additional informative ads from Reinhold’s Kompetenzküche. In addition, *Werbewoche* has taken notice of a guerrilla campaign by Matter & Gretener for the Radisson SAS Hotel at Zurich Airport.

Dinner with Adam
Who wants to invite their friends to a dinner cooked by celebrity chef Ivo Adam in their own home? The health insurance company Sansan and Ruedin Consulting advertising agency make it possible. And they also show that with the right health insurance, you can save hundreds of francs - with more benefits. Helsana's three health insurance companies Sansan, Avanex and Aerosana rely on cross-media campaigns for young target groups to publicize their low-cost offers. The main medium is surprising viral banner films. These lead to landing pages with competition games and pampering prizes. The online measures are supported by ads and radio spots.

Naked and hot
In the fall, Annemarie Wildeisen will of course be back at the stove, conjuring up hearty, wild and fiery dishes for the 338,000 readers of Kochen im Oktoberheft. The October and November issues are heralded by four more informative ads from Reinhold's expert kitchen. The bloodied pheasant for the game motif was kindly provided by the Bianchi company. "It tasted delicious," says Reini Weber.

From the plane to bed
Thanks to a guerrilla idea by Matter & Gretener, the new Radisson SAS Hotel, Zurich Airport, is in the right place at the right time with the right message. Because when international business travelers read the signs held out to them by pick-up men after landing in Zurich, they will also find those of the new Radisson SAS among them. However, they do not bear the name of a business traveler, as is usually the case. But why it's better to make a reservation at the new Radisson SAS next time. The fact that the signs are held by pretty ladies naturally attracts special attention.

More fun in the Mini
The Lowe advertising agency, part of the Draftfcb/Lowe Group, has been commissioned by Mini to develop an activating opening campaign to mark the inauguration of the new Mini Center in Wetzikon. With the new center, the retail partner E. Schläpfer is increasing its sales area many times over. And the driving pleasure of its customers at the same time, as the Lowe agency shows via mega posters, billboards, radio spots and advertisements. Particularly mini are also flap mailings visible at mailboxes. The subjects with the roller coaster promise: Where there's mini, there's big fun.

One last message before takeoff
When the passengers Geddjur Karätsiggst and Graitoffers Adsiggst are paged at the airport, this may bring Sixt new customers. However, these are not the two missing passengers with the ominous names. What can be heard during the announcement sounds like "Get your Car at Sixt" and "Great offers at Sixt". The advertisement for the car rental company could be seen and heard at Stuttgart Airport in January in a guerrilla campaign by the Jung von Matt/Neckar agency. Now the idea has been awarded gold in the "Switched Campaigns" category at the Airport Media Award in Munich. The competition is organized annually by the Airport Media initiative to select the best airport advertising. Bronze went to Switzerland for a light installation. It was used by the McKinivan Moos agency in Cham to promote Credit Suisse's sponsorship of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The winner of free campaigns was "Heavenly Air on Earth" (pictured above) for Airwell air conditioning systems. Agency is Thinknewgroup Munich.

Last but not least: Welcome to AdTube

Now it's official: YouTube, the video portal Google acquired during its latest shopping spree, is receiving more search queries than Yahoo, the world's second-largest search engine after Google.

Now it's official: YouTube, the video portal that Google took with it from its last shopping spree, has more search queries than Yahoo, the world's number two search engine after Google. According to Comscore.com, Google had 7.6 billion search queries in August, YouTube 2.6 billion and Yahoo 2.4 billion. MySpace with 585 million and Facebook with 186 million search queries look a little old in comparison.
This is good news for Google. The internet giant has set about turning YouTube into a cash cow. According to Adage, this could also work: Analogous to the Adwords used by the search engine - Google's main source of income - so-called video search ads are placed on YouTube. However, Adage wonders whether people, who mostly visit YouTube to pass the time, are really interested in commercial advertising. But either way: 2.6 billion search queries per month simply to pass the time - that's pretty good.
