Reporters Without Borders honors Syrian woman as Journalist of the Year

The organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has named Syrian Zaina Erhaim its Journalist of the Year for 2015. Erhaim decided to return home from a safe country abroad in 2013 and has since trained nearly 100 citizen journalists in Syria.

In addition, she had supported the founding of a whole series of independent newspapers and magazines, ROG announced on Wednesday in justification. "Zaina Erhaim proves through her tireless efforts that alternative reporting on the war in Syria is possible," said ROG executive director Christian Mihr. "She is an example of how journalists, even under the most dangerous conditions, do not give up the fight for independence and for a human perspective on a seemingly hopeless conflict." (SDA)

Swisscom to pay 7.9 million fine

In its investigation into Swiss Post’s 2008 tender for a corporate network, the Competition Commission has concluded that Swisscom violated the Antitrust Act. Swisscom disputes these allegations and will challenge the ruling and the fine.

According to the Competition Commission, it was not possible for other providers to make a competitive offer to Swiss Post due to excessive wholesale prices. In addition, Swisscom's offer price was unreasonable. "We are convinced that we acted correctly," says Swisscom CEO Urs Schaeppi. "We attach great importance to compliance with antitrust law." When calculating the offers for end customers, Swisscom took into account the costs incurred by other providers. Some of the other providers can use their own infrastructures and also purchase regulated services from Swisscom at cost-oriented prices in accordance with the Telecommunications Act, as well as commercial advance services. However, Swisscom is not obliged to provide commercial wholesale services at cost-oriented prices.

In Swisscom's view, the allegations of abuse are not justified. Swisscom will therefore appeal the ruling and the fine to the Federal Administrative Court.

Tender dates back to 2008

In 2008, Swiss Post issued a new invitation to tender for the broadband connection of its sites. Following the suitability test, it invited Sunrise, UPC Cablecom and Swisscom to submit an offer. In January 2009, it awarded the contract to Swisscom's bid. Sunrise responded by filing a complaint against Swisscom with the competition authority. It claimed that it should have paid a price for the required advance services that was higher than Swisscom's offer for Swiss Post. The excessive wholesale prices were the reason why it was unable to make a competitive offer to Swiss Post. Swisscom had practiced a margin squeeze and thus violated the Cartel Act.

In summer 2009, Swisscom demonstrated to the Competition Commission that Sunrise would have been in a position to submit a competitive offer if it had made sensible use of its own and upstream services, according to a press release issued by Swisscom on Thursday. Competitors who could only have used commercial inputs for the Swiss Post contract due to a lack of their own infrastructure (e.g. cable networks, own fiber optics) were not invited by Swiss Post to submit a bid; Swisscom was therefore unable to hinder such competitors in the tender. The accusation of abuse to the detriment of Swiss Post is also incomprehensible: The latter negotiated large price discounts in the negotiations. Swisscom had to give in to Swiss Post's demands in order not to lose it as an important customer, the press release continues: "Swisscom's offer had the lowest price. It was therefore in line with the market".

For this reason, Swisscom considers the allegations of abuse to be unjustified and will contest the ruling and the fine before the Federal Administrative Court.

First-class speakers at the "Digital Marketing Summit

In the afternoon, the "Digital Marketing Summit" took place for the third time, offering a series of exciting presentations, case studies and a keynote address. The motto of the VIP event was "Digital Success".

Wenzel Drechsler, Head of Market Research at United Internet Media, did the job. He looked at quality in online advertising and showed why just being visible is not enough.

Olivier Quillet, Head of Corporate Marketing & Communication at Nestlé Switzerland, addressed the question of how content marketing can be successfully applied.

Felix Badura, Co-Founder and Director Product Development at Meetrics, demonstrated the switch to viewable impressions.

meetrics-Felixbadura

Björn Kaspring, Head of Premium Display & Video at InteractiveMedia, dealt with the search for the digital primal meter - the digital currency of the future. Stefan Häckel, Managing Director at Vice Cee, dealt in his presentation with narrative brand management as a savior and challenge in the digital age. "Content Marketing - Last Exit Advertising" was the title of the presentation by Martin Dräger, Managing Director at Unruly.

The highlight of this year's "Digital Marketing Summit" was the keynote by Stephan Sigrist, founder of the think tank W.I.R.E. In his presentation "The Big Noise", he explained that more data generally means more knowledge and more transparency. In his eyes, however, the rise of the data society may not bring more clarity, but the opposite: more half-knowledge and intransparency. In the future, this could force us not to outsource decisions to statistics, but to finally think for ourselves again. And it opens up a new task for marketing.

The closing words of the day belonged to David Burst, President of the IAB Switzerland Association: "Once again, the Summit as well as the Award were huge successes for IAB Switzerland! We are very pleased that this year's afternoon program was once again characterized by exciting presentations and that the award ceremony was successfully held in front of over 500 guests."

The winners of the ADC Young Creatives Award 2015

On Wednesday evening, this year's winning teams of the ADC Young Creatives Award 2015 were announced at the Zukunft club in Zurich.

The ninth ADC Young Creatives Award ceremony honored the winning teams in the categories Film, Outdoor, Cyber and Direct. This year's main sponsor was Mobiliar.

The 90 or so participants in the competition had an exciting task on their hands: How do you get young people aged 18 to 26 to engage with Mobiliar's youth offering? "The submitted works were implemented at a high level across the board, and yet the winners were quite clear," says Philipp Skrabal, ADC board member and main organizer of the competition. And Nicole Zingg, advertising specialist at Mobiliar, says: "For us as the client, it was particularly exciting to see what comes out when the target group also does the advertising."

As every year, the winning teams will fly to Cannes again next year to represent Switzerland at the international Young Lions competition. (uma)

Our subscribers will read more about the judging on Friday, November 20, in the current print edition of Werbewoche.

Dominik Oberwiler, ADC member and jury president, draws a good balance of this year's event: "The works in the categories Film and Cyber were particularly strong, but in Cannes the cards will be reshuffled. With our ADC Boot Camp, we will again optimally prepare the teams for the situation in Cannes." Already for the second time, a duo has won two prizes at once. Because the participation in Cannes is only allowed in one category, the jury has nominated the second-placed team of the free category.

The award ceremony was moderated very entertainingly by Tama Vakeesan (joiz). The organizers would like to express their sincere thanks to all sponsors: Die Mobiliar, Die Post/PostMail, Swissfilm Association, APG/SGA, Streuplan, Keystone, the event and presenting partners: BSW swiss leading agencies and Publicitas, the media partners: werbewoche, persönlich, joiz, the jury and everyone who made this unique competition possible with their assistance.

On November 19, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., joiz will report in detail on ADC's commitment to young talent in a one-hour Living Room broadcast

Rose star provides a change of scenery

The story of the Wild Man dates back 500 years. The Lucerne-based agency Rosenstar is giving the hotel a refreshing new communications identity that pays tribute to its long tradition.

As inspiration for the appearance of the Hotels served wallpaper patterns and fabric covers. For Jana Yaacoub, co-owner of Rosenstar, the agency for values and design, it was clear from the start: "This variety of colors, shapes and patterns is unique. It is the basis for the new appearance of the Wild Man." The communication appearance combines these visual impressions with the brand promise of the Wilden Mann, "Experience history".

"We wanted to bring the myriad details hidden behind the rather inconspicuous facade to the outside world and at the same time combine tradition with contemporary design," says Jana Yaacoub. This was achieved in exemplary fashion with the redesign of the logo. An atmospheric imagery, detail shots as well as a multitude of magnificent patterns taken from the hotel's wallpapers and fabrics characterize the means of communication.

Rosenstar was in charge of everything from strategic and communications consulting to the development and implementation of the design concept. The result is a holistic concept that immerses the viewer in the world of the Wild Man.

Last but not least: Companies for refugees

The situation for refugees is precarious throughout Europe, with simple things often lacking. At the same time, many companies have old but still intact infrastructure that is no longer needed.

Asylum centers and aid organizations in Switzerland are also reaching their limits. There is often a lack of simple things such as tables, chairs or IT, while many companies have old but still fully intact infrastructure that is no longer needed. 4Regufees.ch brings both sides together and ensures that furniture that is no longer in use goes to where it is actually needed. Hinderling Volkart and Serranetga are behind the campaign.

And this is how help is provided: Companies enter available objects in a list and the organizations match these with their own requirements. The exchange takes place directly between the two parties. (uma)

Weltwoche is printed at PMC

PMC Print Media Corporation won the contract to print *Die Weltwoche*.

PMC was awarded the contract because it was able to present a sophisticated production strategy. A division of labor with a partner print shop ensures the client's high expectations in terms of deadlines and print quality as well as backup in the event of an emergency. According to print consultant Thomas Schirmer, Mediaconsale, the innovative concept convinced the Weltwoche management.

"The first talks took place in spring 2014," reveals Managing Director Erwin Lüber. "This is a very important acquisition for PMC. Periodical titles provide every print shop with good basic capacity utilization. The production of the magazine with a weekly circulation of 75,000 copies is a challenging job and an ideal fit for PMC."

For many years, Weltwoche was produced by Ziegler Druck in Winterthur, which is closing its doors at the end of 2015 (Werbewoche.ch reported). In order to avoid bottlenecks and ensure a seamless transition, PMC took over production in mid-October.

Jung von Matt/impact: Brand Lift Survey for Swiss Post

For Swiss Post’s «The Yellow Tour» campaign, which launched in September, JvM/impact is collaborating with Swiss Post to implement a trilingual Brand Lift Survey for the first time, with the aim of measuring branding effects in addition to performance metrics and thus gaining insights into the campaign’s impact.

With Google's Brand Lift Survey for YouTube, advertisers can now measure branding effects of their TrueView video campaigns. The online market research determines advertising recall effects, brand preferences and the change in search volumes of campaign-related search terms on Google.

"The goal of the Brand Lift Survey was to review the combination of creative and media planning for brand impact in order to optimize the current campaign and apply the results to future campaigns," said Dominik Habermacher, Managing Partner of JvM/impact. "With the data we gain from this, we now also have additional KPIs that we can incorporate into our marketing controlling. In this way, we learn with each individual campaign which target groups respond particularly well to our campaign idea," added Marco Imboden, Head of Communications at Swiss Post.

Swiss Post and JvM/impact used Google Brand Lift Surveys specifically to measure the effects of the campaign on their target audience. "Brand Lift Surveys can be set up with little effort and deliver statistically validated results - even while the campaigns are still running. The fact that, in addition to branding targets, the influence of campaigns on the search behavior of target groups is also revealed is certainly a particularly interesting insight," says Scott Little, Industry Manager at Google Switzerland.

The encouraging result of the campaign was that both target figures were significantly positively influenced, the agency said in a statement on Wednesday.

Responsible at Swiss Post: Marco Imboden (Head of Communications), Anke Mosbacher (Head of Marketing Communications & Brand Management), Monica Miraldi Head (Marketing Communications Services). Responsible at Jung von Matt/impact: Dominik Habermacher (Managing Partner). Responsible at Google Switzerland: Scott Little (Industry Manager).

Media Focus: Advertising market continues upward trend

The advertising month of October saw gross advertising print of 499 million Swiss francs, up 2.3% on the same month last year. Although this means that the advertising market is no longer growing quite as strongly as in September, a clear trend is nevertheless discernible.

Cumulatively, the first ten months of the year yield an advertising print of 3,984.9 million gross Swiss francs, an increase of 0.8 percent over the previous year. This positive development also includes the inclusion of Zattoo with data on "moving image advertising" in the statistics.

mediafocus_1
(large image)

With an advertising print of 60.4 million gross Swiss francs, the food industry not only continues to be the sector with the highest advertising print across all sectors, but also increases this by 22.6 percent compared to the same month last year. Soups and chocolate are particularly popular this fall, with two different soup products in the top 10 most advertised: Knorr Bouillon and Knorr Nass-Suppen. There are also three different chocolate products in the top 10: Snickers chocolate bar ranks seventh, M&M's ninth and Frey Supreme chocolate bar finally tenth. It is also striking that around 60 percent of advertising in the food sector takes place on TV, with a further 20 percent in print and around 10 percent in out-of-home.

Transport companies in the fast lane

The transport sector also put on advertising pressure in October, with advertising print of 11 million gross Swiss francs, a 39.5 percent increase on the previous year. The SBB was advertised particularly heavily in October, ranking at the top of the most advertised products in the transport sector and increasing its advertising print by over 50 percent compared to the previous year. This also puts SBB in eighth place among the most advertised products across all industries in October. Swiss and Swiss Post also beat the advertising drum. Swiss Post also ranked ninth in the top 10 advertisers across all sectors in October.

Energetic advertising print

The energy sector also recorded a significant increase in advertising print: in October, advertising print of 3.2 million gross Swiss francs was a whopping 74.4 percent up on the previous year. This corresponds to the second-largest increase in advertising print of any industry in this month. It is also noticeable that a large number of advertisers in this industry advertised in October: The ranking counts a total of 116 different advertisers. In terms of media mix, around 40 percent of advertisers relied on print, while 21 percent advertised on TV.
