Anti-minaret poster: criminal charges planned against several cities

The committee behind the anti-minaret initiative is filing criminal complaints against all cities that ban the display of the referendum poster. SVP National Council member Lukas Reimann made this announcement on Tele Züri. The criminal complaints will be filed in the respective cities that ban the posters. In addition to Basel, these include, for example, Lausanne, Yverdon, and Montreux.

In its appeal to the judges, the initiative committee cites the constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression. Political maneuvers that restrict the democratic formation of opinion should not be permitted, Reimann told Tele Züri.
In a communiqué, Publicité Romande regrets the ban on the poster on the grounds of freedom of political and public expression. It positions itself with a sentence from Voltaire: "I do not agree with what you say, but I am committed to allowing you to say it." The political public sphere is only one of citizens if it allows a great democratic debate and refuses moral hygiene or censorship. Citizens in a 700-year-old democracy are free and mature, and the public media should be given their freedom of expression and citizens their freedom to think.

Last but not least: Google's fight for a healthy world

Just in time for the start of fall, Google has also launched its early warning system for flu outbreaks in this country. After the USA, 20 other countries, including Switzerland, can now benefit from the online tool.

The Early warning system is based on the assumption that patients first find out about their symptoms online before going to the doctor. "Google Flu Trends provides estimates of the frequency of flu cases for a variety of countries and regions around the world. The data is generated almost in real time on the basis of collected search queries," says Google spokesperson Kay Oberbeck, explaining how the online analysis tool works when asked by Pressetext. Some of these estimates are compared with official historical flu data, for example from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control or national health organizations, in order to map flu activity in certain countries or regions more accurately. Sounds plausible, somehow. In the USA at any rate, where Google has been offering the service under the name "Flu Trends" since November 2008, experts are overwhelmingly positive about the accuracy of the prediction. Incidentally, the service is free for users - Google.org bears the costs. An organization that the company likes to call its "philanthropic arm".

Will Twitter soon be selling real-time information to search engines?

According to a Wall Street Journal reporter, Twitter is said to be in talks with Google and Microsoft to make its users' status updates available to their search engines in real time.

The Wall Street Journal reporter Kara Swisher has learned that Twitter is negotiating with Google and Microsoft to be paid by the search engine providers for its real-time information. According to the report, Twitter wants to license its users' status updates to the search engines as a complete feed. In return, Twitter could receive a one-off payment in the millions and share in the revenue from the corresponding search results. Negotiations with the two companies are running independently. According to Swisher, it is unclear whether talks are also being held with other providers such as Yahoo. Twitter does not want to conclude an exclusive agreement under any circumstances. However, it remains to be seen whether agreements will be reached at all.

Anti-minaret initiative: "brief and factual" reporting abroad

The posters for the anti-minaret initiative are the subject of heated debate in the Swiss media. Abroad, however, the issue does not seem to have caused much of a stir so far.

According to the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), the issue is being reported on "briefly and objectively" in foreign media. FDFA spokesman Adrian Sollberger told SDA on Thursday. Since July 2009, a working group has been coordinating communication on the minaret initiative abroad, particularly in the countries of the Muslim world and in countries with large Muslim communities.
