The results of the fall survey of public relations agencies point clearly to an emerging recovery in the Swiss PR market. Demand from the energy sector, the pharmaceutical/medtech/biotech industry, politics, and the public sector is showing encouraging trends. Agencies are already beginning to face difficulties in recruiting qualified staff.

The demand for PR services is a reliable early indicator for the upcoming development of the economy. This is according to a communiqué issued by the Swiss Association of Public Relations Agencies BPRA. In 2009, the PR sector is expected to bottom out. Only one in four agencies is reporting growth, while one in two agencies will probably have to accept a drop in turnover of between 5 and 30%. In the previous year, every second PR agency was still on course for growth. Nevertheless, two thirds of all agencies reported to the BPRA that they had managed to maintain or even significantly increase their profitability in 2009. This may come as a surprise given the fact that one in four agencies reported an increase in wage costs, the BPRA continued. The reason given for this is that highly qualified PR consultancy services are increasingly in demand, while orders for the implementation of PR activities often fail to materialize. The order intake for 2010 gives cause for optimism. Online PR, corporate communications, marketing communications and public affairs are particularly in demand in 2010. However, change management communications, image management and internal communications are increasingly being designed and implemented by clients themselves, without the involvement of a PR agency. According to the BPRA, the energy industry, the pharmaceutical/medtech/biotech sector, politics and the public sector are expected to be the growth drivers of the PR agency industry in 2010.
Nokia goes to court: Apple allegedly infringed patents with iPhone
Apple is alleged to have infringed on patents held by Nokia, the global leader in the mobile phone market, with its successful iPhone. The Finnish company is now taking Apple to court. On Thursday, Nokia filed a lawsuit against Apple in a court in the U.S. state of Delaware.

The company has invested 40 billion euros in the development of mobile communication standards, explained Nokia in Helsinki. Apple had illegally used ten Nokia patents with the introduction of the iPhone in 2007. This involved the use of transmission standards for GSM, UMTS (3G WCDMA) and mobile LAN standards. Nokia posted losses in the third quarter of 2009 for the first time in 16 years. One of the most important reasons for this is the Finns' lack of success in the particularly profitable and high-growth smartphone business. Apple is ahead here with the iPhone.

Press Council: Il Mattino violated personal rights
According to the Press Council, the Lega newspaper *Il Mattino della domenica* went too far. The publication of the phone numbers of politicians whose views it disagrees with violated their personal rights.

It was about the 13th monthly AHV pension. This was to be paid to pensioners in the city of Lugano as a Christmas bonus. On November 9, Guliano Bignasca, president of the Lega and publisher of Mattino, who was elected for life, railed against two SP exponents in his newspaper. The latter, a former member of the cantonal government and a cantonal employee, would oppose the pensioner benefit. Bignasca printed the telephone numbers of the two so that any outraged citizens could vent their anger. He also added the request not to save any calls. The Lega newspaper thus violated the personal rights of the two accused, the Press Council found in its decision published on Thursday, according to SDA. Even political exponents in the public eye have a right to protection of their privacy. The Swiss Press Council did not criticize the content of the article. The committee was called upon by the Ticino Journalists' Association.

After Edipresse terminated its contract with advertising marketer Publicitas, Edipub will take over this task from January 10, 2010. Schwindt said that Edipub had hired staff who had been made redundant at Publicitas. Last March, Edipresse announced that it would take over the marketing itself. Publicitas had to lay off staff as a result of this decision.

The new campaign focuses on strong image profiling. Each subject tells a story about Clariden Leu's values, thinking and actions - reduced to a specific moment in time. "The new campaign for Clariden Leu showcases the central themes," says Moritz Staehelin, Creative Director at Contexta. "This can be seen above all in the implementation: we reduce each individual motif to a singular moment - with the campaign imagery, the choice of photographer and also in terms of corporate design." Another campaign feature is the implementation by photojournalist Tom Stoddart, who has made a name for himself with his unposed photo documentaries. His analog, black and white snapshots have gone around the world, for which he has already received the World Press Award and the Honorary Fellowship Award of the Royal Photographic Society. All subjects of the campaign will be placed in selected national and international business and financial publications in Switzerland, Singapore, Hong Kong, England and Germany. Responsible at Clariden Leu: Thomas Ackermann (Head of Marketing & Communications), Markus Kummer (Head Branding CI/CD & Desktop). Responsible at Contexta: Nadine Borter (overall responsibility), Bene Abegglen, Moritz Staehelin (creative direction), Lionel Büttner (art direction), Andreas Troxler (text), Christian-Kumar Meier (consulting management), Claudio Garovi (consulting). Hidden camera: SF moves judgments forward
Swiss Television is appealing the Zurich District Court's rulings against Ueli Haldimann, who was the SF editor-in-chief at the time, and four other defendants to the Higher Regional Court. The rulings concerned the use of a hidden camera.

As SF spokesman David Affentranger told SDA on Thursday, the appeal was filed as a precautionary measure. It is quite possible that those responsible will waive their right to a higher court ruling after all. A ruling is currently still pending at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg on a similar SF case. The defense lawyer had demanded acquittals for all defendants. The judgment now being appealed concerned images taken in the practice of cosmetic surgeons. The editors of "Kassensturz" wanted to show that the risk information provided to patients was inadequate in some cases. Two cosmetic surgeons and a practice assistant filed a complaint.

Since yesterday, fiery posters have been shining in the greater Rapperswil region. In large-format F-12 posters, on match posters and on e-boards, national striker Thierry Paterlini is advertising the national ice hockey team's home game on November 4. Posters tailored to the region were designed with seven players for all home games. Weber Harbeke Partners, the Zurich-based campaign agency of Swiss Ice Hockey, has further developed last year's concept and further emotionalized the concept of close-up portraits. Surrounded by flames, the national players advertise the respective game with accurate, sometimes provocative statements. The focus is still on the idea of making the national team players more tangible and the faces more widely known to the public. As a further message, viewers are provided with detailed information on the respective international match. The portraits were taken by Gian Paul Lozza, who has photographed world-class sports stars such as Bode Miller, Didier Cuche, Nicolas Müller and Philippe Senderos. Responsible at Swiss Ice Hockey: Alain Kappeler, Bianca Kappeler, Lukas Hammer.
