Press Council: Complaint about caricature rejected

A cartoon depicting the pope with a swastika does not violate journalistic standards. This is the conclusion reached by the Press Council, which dismissed a complaint against the Tages-Anzeiger.

The drawing shows the Pope with a Christian cross in his hand, which becomes a swastika in the shadow image. It was printed in May and referred to Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Israel. The Pope commemorated the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial. In the opinion of the Press Council, the Tages-Anzeiger did not offend the dignity of the Pope or the religious sensibilities of the faithful with the caricature. Freedom of comment and criticism also applies to churches, the Swiss Press Council stated in its statement published on Tuesday.
In addition, the question of whether satirical contributions and caricatures have a discriminatory effect or violate human dignity should be judged by a generous standard. In the opinion of the Press Council, the Pope caricature should be viewed in conjunction with the accompanying commentary. It criticizes the fact that the Pope in Israel spoke of the Church's compassion for the victims, but not of the Church's complicity.

New Lgk: Image campaign realized for Swiss Post

Neue Lgk has launched a new branding campaign for Swiss Post. The campaign focuses on the needs of business customers who rely on Swiss Post’s range of services.

Well-known Swiss companies such as Migros, Victorinox, the Swiss Red Cross, Lindt & Sprüngli and Weleda were won over for the campaign. With the statement "For the most demanding customers in the world", an answer is given to all the needs shown. Neue Lgk continued its collaboration with director Marcel Langenegger and Chocolate Films for the realization of the advertising films.
The new image is designed to run for several years and includes TV commercials, posters and advertisements at a classic level. A microsite advertised with online banners provides more in-depth information about the services from the customer testimonials and links them to a competition. The accompanying communication measures relating to Swiss Post's sponsorship commitment are being implemented using the same integrated concept. The advertising materials have been in use throughout Switzerland since the beginning of November until further notice.

The CSR section on the Lindt & Sprüngli corporate website is divided into the categories of raw material procurement (sourcing), production and consumption and discloses the various memberships and responsibilities. The European edition of the Wall Street Journal has been relaunched. Both print and online are now presented in a revised design. The front page looks clearer and the content focuses on more background information.

The front page of the print edition should be clearer thanks to information elements and a very limited number of front-page topics. In terms of content, analyses, commentaries and columns will provide more background information. More advertising space as well as additional positioning options and formats will be available to advertising customers in future, according to Horizont.net. The relaunch of the online presence is also characterized by an expanded offering. Numerous blogs are dedicated to special topics such as Eastern and Central Europe or British politics. In addition, reporting will be supplemented with interviews and analysis features. The daily newsletter "World At A Glance" offers users an up-to-date overview of world and economic news every afternoon.

SRG: Quality debate continues online

At the invitation of SRG, more than 150 media professionals gathered in Lucerne on November 10, 2009, to discuss quality and relevance in public service broadcasting. Starting today, all presentations and debates, video and radio segments, as well as the photo gallery of the 2009 Quality Symposium created by a class at the Media Training Center (MAZ), are available on the website.

The symposium focused on the question of relevance in the everyday lives of SRG radio and television media professionals. Patrick Nussbaum (Head of Information Department RSR), Gilles Pache (Program Director TSR), Lis Borner (Head of DRS 4 News), Bernard Rappaz (Editor-in-Chief Information TSR), Edy Salmina (Head of Information RSI) and Thomas Schäppi (Editorial Director "SF Tagesschau") discussed this. They showed how time-consuming and self-critical quality assurance can be in everyday life and how their teams perceive it.
In his response, media scientist Stephan Russ-Mohl called for more education about journalism and the media in the media, in particular about the effort required for high-quality programs and broadcasts: If NGOs succeed in drawing attention to the impending climate catastrophe, then the media should also succeed in educating people about the risks of information waste and media intellectual pollution.

YouTube brings media and citizen journalists together

YouTube has launched a new service called «YouTube Direct,» which is designed to make it easier for media outlets to access video footage from so-called «citizen journalists.» The tool allows newsrooms to request clips directly from users, review them, and publish them on their own websites.

In this way, the content produced by citizen journalists could be brought out of anonymity to a certain extent, a spokesperson for the German Journalists' Association (DJV) told the Pressetext.ch news service. This is an important step forward in terms of better verifiability and fact-checking. However, the DJV spokesperson is rather cautious about the status of the video portal as a news source. YouTube is predominantly an entertainment platform. People should not make the mistake of believing that they can keep up with the big news agencies. However, the site could play an important role in media reporting in exceptional situations, such as during the civil protests in Iran. The new service is still in the test phase. An initial test run has already been carried out with the Huffington Post.

Last but not least: The U17 national team wins - "10 to 10" celebrates with them

It’s truly a rare occurrence—the Swiss U-17 national team winning the World Cup. Of course, this was also covered on the news program «10 vor 10.» However, some viewers may have been surprised by just how extensively the news team covered the topic.

"Many people in the country trembled, hoped and then cheered. But how must the emotions have been surging through the Seferovic family's living room...?" were the words Stephan Klapproth used to introduce the home story segment on the news program "10 vor 10" on Monday. For the final match, a camera team was sent to the Seferovic family, the parents of goalscorer Haris Seferovic. You can imagine the whole family gathered in the living room, watching the game with excitement and what a cheer when Haris scores the coveted goal. In the approximately 6-minute segment, which is incidentally the first of the program and is supplemented with another 4-minute segment on the promotion of young talent, the viewer is shown in detail the emotions that the victory triggers in the family and how proud they, especially father Seferovic, are of their offspring. The whole spectacle fills around half of the broadcasting time. But who would have been interested in "hard news"? This emotionally charged report leaves no one cold.
