Berliner Zeitung accelerates staff cuts

The press and media industry seems to have weathered the major wave of layoffs for now, but the cutbacks continue. Now the Berliner Zeitung, Berlin’s largest subscription newspaper, plans to reduce its workforce.

Berliner Verlag has already made a voluntary redundancy offer to all employees who are prepared to leave the company, as Oliver Rohloff, Managing Director of Berliner Verlag, confirmed to Horizont.net on Friday. He cites the sharp slump in advertising revenues throughout the publishing industry as the reason.

Alcohol advertising from February on all stations

The advertising regulations for alcoholic beverages will be relaxed on February 1. The Federal Council decided on Friday to enact the revised Radio and Television Act on that date.

Advertising for light alcoholic beverages is currently prohibited in Switzerland on all SRG stations and in the Swiss advertising windows of foreign television providers, which is contrary to the EU "Television without Frontiers" Directive. Local television stations and private radio stations, however, are allowed to advertise these light alcoholic beverages.
With the Media Agreement, which the Federal Council ratified on Friday, Switzerland can benefit from EU film funding until 2013. With Media, Swiss filmmakers will have easier access to EU training and further education programs and can make use of an international network. The agreement on Swiss participation in Media has been provisionally applied since September 2007. Political and religious advertising as well as commercials for spirits and mixed drinks remain prohibited.
Parliament approved both the liberalization of advertising and participation in the EU film promotion programme Media. The entry into force of the revised Radio and Television Act (RTVA) is subject to the condition that no referendum is launched. The deadline is January 14. Nothing is known about referendums.

Sound logo abolished at Mercedes-Benz

The automaker Mercedes-Benz, which is currently looking for a new tagline, has discontinued the sound logo it introduced two years ago. The acoustic trademark, which features a boys' choir, has recently been phased out.

Internal investigations have shown that the additional audio effect is not needed, a Mercedes spokeswoman told Horizont.net. The brand speaks for itself. The sound logo was developed two years ago by the lead agency Jung von Matt and has been used in all international radio and TV commercials since November 1, 2007.

Advertising in Southeast Asia - A charming smile and simple logic

Thai culture is known for its friendly smiles, making the charming "Thai Smile" the perfect slogan for Thai Airways' posters.

Commuter newspaper News to be discontinued with immediate effect

The commuter newspaper News will be discontinued as of today, Friday. This was announced by Tamedia in a press release on Friday. This leaves 20 Minuten and Blick am Abend in the Swiss commuter newspaper market.

In the past few months since the departure of Basler Zeitung and Berner Zeitung, the media house Tamedia has examined various strategies to save News. In the foreground was an even closer cooperation with the Tages-Anzeiger, which would also have included an extensive advertising combination, the Tamedia press release continues. However, customer surveys had shown that the associated impact on the Tages-Anzeiger's advertising rates would not have been acceptable. The Board of Directors and Management Board of Tamedia have therefore decided to discontinue the commuter newspaper News. The Tages-Anzeiger media group is thus concentrating on the further development of the Tages-Anzeiger and the news portal Tagesanzeiger.ch as part of the Newsnetz.
As a result, 20 jobs will be cut in the editorial department. This will affect 27 employees. As far as possible, new positions will be sought in other media within the company, Tamedia added. The social plan negotiated with employee representatives and trade unions for Tages-Anzeiger and Druckzentrum in June 2009 will apply to all those affected. The measures are subject to the employees' participation rights.
News was launched in December 2007 with four regional editions: News Basler Zeitung, News Berner Zeitung, News Mittelland and News Tages-Anzeiger. After the News Mittelland edition had already been discontinued in December 2008, the partners Basler Zeitung and Berner Zeitung decided in August 2009 not to continue the Basel and Bern editions. Since then, News Tages-Anzeiger has been published with a circulation of 100,000 copies in the canton of Zurich and in the central stations of the S-Bahn network in the neighboring cantons.

Will there be another takeover in the Swiss press landscape

In June, Albert Polo Stäheli, CEO of the NZZ Group, stated in an interview with the Handelszeitung that he would be interested in acquiring the 37% share package held by Publigroupe in the Basler Zeitung if the majority owner, the Hagemann family, also saw it that way.

Now there seems to be movement in the matter. As the Tages Anzeiger reports in today's edition, talks between Stäheli , Publigroupe and BaZ publisher Matthias Hagemann appear to be close to completion. The deal should be finalized before Christmas. The possibility of a collaboration with Peter Wanner's Aargauer AZ Group at a later date cannot be ruled out.
The BaZ would fit in well with the NZZ Group's portfolio, which today includes the NZZ, the St. Galler Tagblatt with the associated newspapers in Appenzell, the Rhine Valley, Toggenburg and Will, the Neue Luzerner Zeitung with offshoots in Nid- and Obwalden, Schwyz, Uri and Zug, the Zürcher Unterländer, the Zürcher Oberländer and the Zürichsee-Zeitung. Polo Stäheli gave the NZZ Group its first new management structure at Group level shortly after taking office. He pushed for greater cooperation between the regional newspapers. By including the BaZ and possibly the Mittellandzeitung in the group, the synergy potential thus created could be significantly increased. The NZZ Group could thus further improve its position in the Swiss newspaper market and form a strong counterpart to Tamedia in the subscription daily press sector.

Draftfcb/Lowe Group: bad weather outdoor advertising for warming soups

The creatives at Draftfcb/Lowe developed a series of poster subjects for Knorr Suprême, which are only placed by APG when it is snowing, drizzling, shivering and storming outside.

You can see the "Chanterelles" mushroom soup served in style in a bowl with ear warmers. Or the "broccoli" vegetable soup, which is served as if in a five-star restaurant - but under a woolly hat. The pre-Christmas appearance of the snowman melting blissfully in the tomato soup is heart-warming.
The seductive posters in the F12 and F200 formats are placed at short notice in cold and wet weather in German and French-speaking Switzerland.

BAZ denies rumors of merger

The rumors currently circulating about a takeover or merger between the Basler Zeitung and the NZZ have been categorically denied. The BAZ reported this in a statement released on Friday.

"Is the Basler Zeitung going to the NZZ Group?" asks the Tages-Anzeiger on Friday and immediately follows up: "The Swiss daily press is facing the next concentration - if nothing else goes wrong." But according to the BAZ, no negotiations are currently taking place with the NZZ. However, talks are being held with all major publishing groups about possible cooperations. These talks are taking place with the agreement of all Basler Zeitung shareholders.
