Publicom: Crisis in the free press hardly benefits paid newspapers
News has just become the fourth free newspaper to fold this year. However, this does not mean the all-clear for the subscription press. This is the result of a survey of experts conducted by the media consulting firm Publicom.
The year 2009 will go down in Swiss media history as the year of the death of free newspapers. Four daily free newspapers had to cease publication. Does this mean the end of the commuter newspaper business model? Hardly, according to a majority of the Delphinarium expert panel. In principle, the business model remains attractive. This year's closures are seen as a necessary structural adjustment.
However, opinions differ as regards the further development of this type of media. Just under half of those surveyed tend to believe that the trend towards free media will continue unabated as soon as the economy picks up again. Others believe that the free newspaper business model is reaching its limits or that the era of the free newspaper is definitely over. However, the media experts are largely in agreement on one point: the subscription-based press is hardly benefiting from the crisis of the free titles. On the contrary, the surviving commuter newspapers will develop better than the subscription newspapers
Publicom, which specializes in media research and consulting, regularly publishes the results of a survey of experts under the name Delphinarium. Over forty experts from leading media companies as well as representatives from advertising, media journalism, communication science and corporate communications take part in the panel.
