Hubert Burda Media: Paul-Bernhard Kallen becomes Chief Executive Officer

Publisher Hubert Burda is arranging for his succession and is appointing his Chief Financial Officer, Paul-Bernhard Kallen, as the new CEO of Hubert Burda Media, effective January 1.

According to Kress.de, the publishing house confirmed a corresponding report by Faz on Thursday morning. Hubert Burda will remain in the company as managing general partner and will continue to determine the company's strategy in the coming years, the newspaper writes.
Kallen has been with the company since 1996 and has been a member of the Management Board since 1999, initially responsible for the Technologies division. Following the departure of Deputy CEO Jürgen Todenhöfer last year, he also took over Finance, Direct Marketing, International and Printing. He is also responsible for the Internet holdings. The economist first became acquainted with Burda as a young consultant at McKinsey.
It was only in November that the publishing house settled the succession of board member and Focus editor-in-chief Helmut Markwort: Wolfram Weimer will take over his duties as Focus CEO by September 2010 at the latest, and his publishing division will be assigned to the remit of CEO Philipp Welte.

Oldest US series is canceled after 54 years

The longest-running U.S. series is set to end after 54 years. «As the World Turns» had served as a springboard for many actors' careers.

"As the World Turns" will be taken off the air in September 2010, the broadcaster CBS announced on Wednesday, according to SDA. The soap opera, which is set in a small US town, had served as a career springboard for many actors, including Meg Ryan, Julianne Moor and Oscar winner Marisa Tomei. More than 13,000 episodes were broadcast.
The series had been awarded numerous Emmys. Three months ago, CBS had already canceled the series "Guiding Light", which had run for 72 years, first on radio and then on television. "Guiding Light" and "As the World Turns" were produced by Telenext Media, a subsidiary of the consumer goods company Procter & Gamble. The audience figures for "As the World turns" fell from 6.5 million in 1993 to 2.5 million this year.

Twitter dominates top 100 websites

The Guardian has published its latest list of the 100 most important websites of 2009. Unsurprisingly, as in many other areas, the microblogging site Twitter dominates the list.

The rapid rise of Twitter and similar sites has shown how short-lived the online world has become, write the Guardian journalists according to the press release. Today, even blogs, which were once considered short-lived, look "old" compared to microblogging sites. The huge popularity of Twitter has not been limited to the core site, but has given rise to countless websites that offer tools, applications, lists and analyses related to the platform in one way or another. Well-known examples include Twitterfall and, since the introduction of the list function, Listorious. Twitter even left its mark on large web companies such as Google, Microsoft and Facebook this year. For example, both Google and Microsoft's Bing entered into real-time search partnerships with the microblogging site.
In addition to Twitter, the Guardian list naturally also includes other favorites from this year. Facebook, for example, once again proved its dominance in the social media sector. In terms of video sites, the US platform Hulu attracted some attention alongside perennial favorite YouTube. In terms of gossip from the celebrity world, the AOL site TMZ also made a name for itself in this country, not least due to the coverage of Michael Jackson's death.
Chrome and Firefox dominated the browser category, while Flickr and Picasa were voted among the most important photo sites. According to the Guardian ranking, Wikipedia and Wikileaks are still recommended for research purposes. Unsurprisingly, Google dominates search engines, challenged by new competitors Bing and Wolfram Alpha.

Last but not least: Zettabytes and terabytes

Homo sapiens likes to spend an hour or so every now and then watching TV, surfing the Internet, or reading the newspaper—he also likes to be tempted into playing a computer game or having a quick chat on his cell phone, and sometimes he even picks up a book—while the radio might be playing in the background.

A lot of information rushes past us every day. But how much exactly? Two scientists from the Global Information Industry Center at the University of California asked themselves this question - and the answer will blow many an imagination: In 2008, the entire US population spent a total of around 1.3 trillion hours with television, radio, Internet, newspapers, books, cell phones or game consoles. The amount of data consumed amounts to a whopping 3.6 zettabytes - 3.6 billion terabytes - i.e. 3.6 x 10 to the power of 21 bytes. Calculated down to one person, this means Each US citizen consumed an average of 34 gigabytes of data per day - most of it in moving images, by the way. Computer games have now replaced television as the No. 1 media source - at least as far as the data source is concerned. Not bad. Even if it's not easy to imagine.

Wunderman: The smallest hearing aid staged for Phonak

Hearing aid manufacturer Phonak is launching the Audéo Mini, the smallest hearing aid in the company’s history. To support its targeted launch, Wunderman Zurich developed an international dialogue campaign.

According to the agency, the aim was to give the small hearing aid as big a stage as possible. This was achieved through text ads, among other things: compared to the huge headlines, the Audéo Mini appears tiny as a 1:1 image.
The content of the statements has become the process of finding a name itself: How do you name something extremely small without the name sounding ridiculous? Terms such as "Itsy-bitsy" or "Klitzeklein" were used to show that it was difficult to give something so tiny a worthy name. This mechanism was used to dramatize other product advantages in addition to the size of the product.
Among other things, a direct mailing including a brochure, advertisements and POS measures are used, which are realized by national companies in cooperation with the Wunderman network.
