Frontwork: Visible from near and far

Frontwork designed and installed an illuminated sign for Limeco.

The former sewage treatment plant association is now an inter-municipal institution that operates on the market under the name Limeco. To mark the occasion, Limeco commissioned the Frontwork agency to design a modern image. The logo consists of five honeycombs: Overlapping and illuminated hexagons in different colors. The overlapping of the honeycombs results in additional color tones and an interplay of colors and shapes.

Politiken ends dispute over Mohammed cartoons

The Danish newspaper *Politiken* has reached a settlement with Islamic organizations regarding the publication of a cartoon depicting Muhammad as a terrorist and has apologized for offending Muslims.

Most other Danish newspapers distanced themselves from the liberal paper's action, as did leading politicians. The cartoonist Kurt Westergaard, who narrowly escaped an assassination attempt for his drawing, said that this was a genuflection to the Islamists and a sell-out of freedom of expression.
Politiken had republished the cartoon depicting Mohammed as a terrorist with a bomb in his turban, as did numerous other Danish newspapers, when Westergaard was first threatened with death in 2008. As reported by SDA, the Saudi Arabian lawyer Faisal Yamani then demanded an apology from the Danish media on behalf of eight Islamic organizations from countries such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Libya. He received this from Politiken editor-in-chief Töger Seidenfaden. He explained the agreement with Fasani: "In our country, the debate about Islam is characterized by a lack of dialogue and a lack of understanding for the views of others. We wanted to do something about this".
The first publication of the cartoon in the newspaper Jyllands-Posten at the beginning of 2006, together with eleven other cartoons, led to massive protests in the Islamic world. More than 150 people died as a result.

Federal Council opposes warnings about the risks of driving

The Federal Council has rejected a motion by Green Party National Council member Antonio Hodgers, who called for warning labels on car advertisements similar to those used in tobacco advertising. Automakers will not be required to include warning labels in their advertisements regarding risks to health and the environment.

The warnings in tobacco advertising have contributed to raising awareness and changing behavior, the Geneva politician explained his proposal. Warnings are therefore also suitable for car advertising. This is because motor vehicle traffic leads to environmental pollution and a lack of exercise and is therefore harmful to health. In addition, warnings should also be issued about the risk of accidents.
However, the instrument called for by Hodgers would do little to protect the environment from harmful emissions and increase road safety, according to the Federal Council. A mandatory requirement for such notices would not be very efficient. In its response published on Friday, the government also writes that car advertising already has to include information on fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and energy efficiency. New cars would have to be labeled with an energy label and soon with an environmental label.

SRG: Audience Council on regional/diagonal and Vancouver coverage

The Audience Council met and voted on the Regional/Diagonal program and praised the performance of Swiss television in its coverage of the Olympic Games in Vancouver.

The Public Council is impressed by the performance of Swiss Television (SF) in its coverage of the Olympic Games in Vancouver. The team conveyed important information and specialist knowledge. It also succeeded in bringing viewers closer to the Olympic sporting spirit. "Vancouver Update" is appreciated by the Public Council as a short and concise program that brings viewers up to date and provides an overview of both what has happened and what is to come.
The Public Council welcomes the partial recordings in the late afternoon as a compact review of the previous night. Due to the time difference, such partial recordings are valuable and necessary.
The main drawbacks for the Public Council are the short time slots for the ski races and the infrequent and short rankings. In addition to the live program, SF also offers a wide range of online content on Vancouver 2010, but some members of the Public Council felt that the website was confusing. The lack of an archive function makes it difficult to search for contributions that have already been broadcast. The Council also sees potential for improvement in teletext.
"Regional-Diagonal": Implementation of the "idée suisse"
According to the Audience Council, "Regional-Diagonal" offers a good service by allowing viewers to look beyond their own region. The weekly magazine is an integral part of the Swiss Radio DRS program. For some members of the Council, it is a welcome change that, for once, contributions from the areas of society, (popular) culture, education and everyday life dominate rather than political and economic topics. The view of the program beyond its own cantonal and regional borders is appreciated by the audience councillors. In addition, the topics are presented in such a way that they are also of interest in other regions. The program has the potential to integrate the different parts of the country and thus to implement the slogan "idée suisse" in a meaningful way.
However, some Council members had missed topics from the field of sport and reports from French-speaking Switzerland. In contrast, Ticino was almost disproportionately represented.
The Audience Council rated the website of "Regional-Diagonal" as good and clear. The complete overview of topics and the possibility to listen to programs are highly appreciated. However, some members of the Council would like more information on the individual topics and more direct access to the "Regional-Diagonal" website.

Tele Bärn celebrates its 15th birthday

On March 1, 2010, the television station Tele Bärn will be 15 years old. Switzerland's second-largest regional TV station is celebrating this birthday with a look back at the early days and behind the scenes of today's newsroom.

Fifteen years ago, a small team of young people who had just become video journalists produced news, background and entertainment programs. And were soon met with some derision, according to a Tele Bärn press release. Today, an average of more than 200,000 people watch the Tele Bärn program every day. This corresponds to a good fifth of those who can receive the station in the area from Langenthal to the south of the canton of Fribourg and from Lake Neuchâtel to the Haslital.
On March 1, the 60-strong team looks back together with the viewers. To the first news 15 years ago, to the Seva Game Show and to the first Tele Bärn sports report on the subject of Hornussen. In the "Musigstubete", musicians who were part of the first show take to the stage and the "Info" shows what a VJ's working day looks like today.
At the same time, Patrick Teuscher takes up his position as the new program director on this day. He was involved in the early days of the station at Tele Bärn from 1995 to 1997 and is now returning - after
Career stages as head of the magazine "Innovationen", deputy editor-in-chief
at Cash TV and video project manager at the Keystone photo agency - as program manager at
Tele Bärn back.

Severance payment to the staff of ddp/AP

Negotiations with the owners of the former AP Associated Press Switzerland—now ddp/dapd—which lasted more than two weeks, have resulted in an agreement. After five rounds of negotiations, the two parties agreed on a severance package of 4.5 months' salary.

The 20 dismissed permanent and regular freelance editorial staff who sign the agreement will be released from their duties from Monday. This was announced by the Comedia trade union on Thursday evening. However, it only affects employees in German-speaking Switzerland - journalists in French-speaking Switzerland are still on permanent contracts, Comedia Central Secretary Stephanie Vonarburg told SDA. As the Comedia and Impressum unions wrote on Friday, the plan was to communicate this result on Sunday so as not to jeopardize the agreements. Confirmation is now being given early because it has already been made public in advance.
Last December, AP Switzerland was sold to the agency ddp Deutscher
Depeschendienst was sold. As a result, the news agencies SDA and ddp announced their cooperation in the Swiss market. The AP bureau, now ddp Switzerland, which has existed since 1981, will become the ddp correspondents' bureau. SDA will not be taking on any of the existing ddp staff, as it has to cut jobs itself, writes SDA. For the journalists, this meant that they were made redundant on the same day, according to a statement from the trade unions. The German employer's action, which lacks any social responsibility, is neither economically comprehensible nor acceptable in terms of media policy, it continues. The fact that the SDA had offered its hand to boot out its only competitor continues to leave a stale aftertaste.
