Last but not least: The USA in the fight against internet censorship

The USA now wants to make its fight against internet censorship a central part of its foreign policy. This was announced to Congress by Michael Posner, Secretary of State at the US Department of State.

In order to restrict freedom of expression and the flow of information online, many countries have increased their spending, he said on Tuesday according to the speech text. In contrast, the American government is supporting the development of tools to circumvent internet blocks and ensure secure connections between users. On Thursday, high-ranking members of the ministry would meet with managers from technology companies to discuss this. The Supreme Court has granted freedom of expression on the internet the greatest possible protection under the constitution. This is because freedom of speech is particularly important in the USA, even in comparison to other democratic countries. Freedom of speech is so highly valued that, unlike in many European countries, denying the Holocaust is not a punishable offense. Or that US soldiers are now allowed to use Facebook and Twitter on service computers. However, the US anti-Internet censorship campaign also knows one limit: sites with pornographic content or games are to be blocked.

Ringier with "Gesundheit Sprechstunde" under Bakom control

The Federal Office of Communications (Bakom) has opened a regulatory investigation into Ringier TV's program «Gesundheit Sprechstunde.».

OFCOM lawyer Michael Stämpfli confirmed a report in the Tages-Anzeiger newspaper on Wednesday that sponsors were suspected of being extensively embedded in the program. OFCOM had observed appearances by sponsors that might go too far. Although sponsors may be the subject of the program, they are not allowed to advertise, as Stämpfli explains.
According to SDA, the program has already repeatedly violated legal provisions. OFCOM regularly inspects broadcasts that the authority had previously objected to. During one such inspection, possible shortcomings were again revealed in broadcasts of "Gesundheit Sprechstunde" in the fall of 2009. This is why OFCOM has launched the new supervisory procedure. According to Stämpfli, it is a matter of health, medical expertise, medical applications and medication. This is why OFCOM has a special responsibility in terms of supervision.
Stefan Hackh, Ringier media spokesman, confirmed the facts of the case on Wednesday and stated that an investigation was currently being announced.

BBC must save - massive upheaval planned

The British public broadcaster BBC is facing massive upheaval. A quarter of its current radio, television, and online programming is set to be cut. This would result in savings of approximately 600 million pounds. As part of the restructuring, 600 jobs are set to be eliminated.

BBC director Mark Thompson said in London on Tuesday that a quarter less money would also be spent on the website over three years. According to the plans, the quality of the content is to be improved despite all the savings. More television will be produced in-house and less will be bought in from abroad. Broadcasts of sporting events, including the Wimbledon tennis tournament and Formula 1 races, will also be affected.
The BBC Radio Council still has to approve the plans. A months-long discussion is expected. The radio union Bectu spoke of "unnecessary" and "politically motivated" savings ahead of the general election. Instead of content, the salaries of top earners were to be cut. The union has already announced strikes against the plans.

Tele Züri : End of "Swissdate" matchmaking show

Tele Züri is discontinuing the program "Swissdate" as of mid-July 2010. This is the regional TV station's response to falling viewer numbers in recent months and the increasing difficulty in finding candidates for the singles show.

Over 250 associations and organizations were contacted and flyers were distributed in shopping centers. "The response rate was zero," editor-in-chief Markus Gilli told the SDA news agency. Today, the search for a partner apparently takes place on the Internet and no longer on a TV show. The concept for a new Saturday evening show is currently being developed. The new format will start in mid-August 2010. The previous "Swissdate" presenter Gabriela Ursprung will continue to be used as a presenter on Tele Züri, for example for the live broadcast from the Street Parade in Zurich.

The Navigator for American Express: Which credit card is right for me?

The Zurich-based dialog marketing agency Der Navigator has developed a microsite for Swisscard AECS, a joint venture between American Express and Credit Suisse. The microsite showcases American Express's card portfolio.

Eight characters, three women and five men, represent the Microsite the portfolio of eleven "Private Cards". The characters are intended to represent typical representatives of the core target group and help users to find the right card for them. If you move the mouse over one of the characters, it starts to move. When clicked, the character moves to the foreground and leads to the benefits, offer and application. The accompanying display campaign, for example on Cash.ch or Fuw.ch, and a comprehensive Google AdWords campaign ensure that the microsite is publicized.

Responsible at Swisscard AECS: Christoph Stuber (Manager American Express Credit Cards), Silvia Bandschapp (Project Management). Responsible at Der Navigator: Christoph Bohn (concept/texts), Salvatore Pittalis (screen design), Michael Sieber (videos), On-Idle, London, Marc Peter (animation/programming), Martin Bauer (consulting, overall responsibility)
