Graduation ceremony for sales specialists

Last Friday, 189 new sales specialists were presented with their federal certificates at Casino Luzern. The professional examination, which was held for the second time in this format, attracted 40 percent more graduates than last year.

Around 349 people took the exam; 189 or 54 percent passed. The average grade of the successful graduates was 4.4. Sonja Renggli from Finsterwald LU was the best of the year with an average grade of 5.1. Corinne Bieri from Hochdorf LU and Gabriel Gübeli from Wil SG achieved a good average grade of 5.0. With the 189 new sales specialists, the number of qualified sales specialists in Switzerland has risen to 4,478 - a healthy number that the economy can cope with, says Walter Zeller, who made his last appearance this year after years of commitment as examination director. Zeller is handing over the role to Nicole Beck, but will remain active in the area of quality assurance, as the Swiss Marketing Association announced on Monday.

Draftfcb/Lowe: Turning tin cans into movie stars

At 84 percent, Switzerland’s recycling rate is well above the international average. To ensure this remains the case, the Association for the Promotion of Recycling of Steel Cans—Ferro Recycling for short—is launching two new commercials to remind people of the importance of recycling steel. The commercials were produced by the Zurich-based advertising agency Draftfcb/Lowe.

In the leading roles, dented tin cans appear as movie stars. As in former Ferro-Spots they appear in front of a collection container, where they line up for recycling with high hopes. But the story always takes a surprising turn. For example, a can that would like to be reborn as a knight's armor in the Middle Ages reappears as a futuristic, blinking robot. And the can that desperately wants to become a member of a heavy metal band rings a Swiss cowbell after its transformation. The two commercials will be broadcast in German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland.

Last but not least: researching can jeopardize your story

An article in the latest issue of *Der Beobachter* takes aim at the TV show «Gesundheits-Sprechstunde.» Under the headline «Paid TV Appearance,» the show is accused of allowing experts to be featured in exchange for money. That sounds terrible and sends shivers down the spines of well-meaning consumer advocates. However, the author seems unaware that this is precisely what the new sponsorship guidelines from the Federal Office of Communications (Bakom) allow.

The only condition is that the matter is clearly declared. If you don't know something, then you have to do some research. Even at the risk of making the crisp story less crisp. What is completely unacceptable, however, is that the detailed justification that Hans Jürg Deutsch, the person responsible for the "Gesundheits-Sprechstunde", sent to the author was not included in the article at all. A magazine like the Beobachter, which is committed to transparency and fairness, should know the basics of fair reporting and, above all, apply them.

To the statement

Observer's comment:
The article "Researching can jeopardize your story" claims that the Beobachter did not research properly and reported unfairly on the subject of sponsorship in the TV programme "Gesundheit-Sprechstunde". The allegation is false. The Beobachter did not make the accusation that the sponsorship guidelines had been violated. However, it is true that Gesundheit Sprechstunde held out the prospect to a PR agency that a prescription drug from a particular manufacturer would be featured in the program. According to therapeutic products legislation, this is not permitted. Hans Jürg Deutsch does not dispute these facts with the questionable offer (e-mail to a PR agency). The person responsible for the TV program was quoted several times in the aforementioned Beobachter article. He was able to comment on all the allegations. All quotes and statements used in the article are available in writing.
