News Corp. increases profit and sales

News Corporation continues to gain momentum: Business is booming, thanks primarily to rising advertising revenue.

According to SDA, media mogul Rupert Murdoch's US media group earned a bottom line of 775 million dollars in its first quarter ended September - more than a third more than in the same period last year. Turnover rose from 7.2 billion to 7.4 billion dollars.
News Corp. owns the film studio 20th Century Fox, the Fox television chain, newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal or the British Times and Sun as well as book publishers. In Germany, Murdoch controls the pay-TV channel Sky Deutschland (formerly Premiere). In the UK, he is currently looking to acquire the entire BSkyB television group.
Competitor Time Warner also reported a jump in sales on Wednesday. Advertising spots and fees for its pay channels filled the US media group's coffers in the third quarter of 2010. Overall, Time Warner sales rose by 2 percent to 6.4 billion dollars compared to the same period last year. However, the early settlement of debts had a negative impact on the company's profits. The bottom line was only 522 million dollars, a fall of 21 percent.

Last but not least: of happy and less happy meals

Now the happy meals are under attack: the San Francisco City Council wants to ban fast food chains from boosting sales of these "happy" meals with toy gifts.

Only healthier Happy Meals that meet a list of strict nutritional requirements are then allowed to include toys as promotional gifts. "Healthy" in this case means less fat, salt and sugar as well as fruit and vegetables included.
"A huge victory for the health of our children" is how the initiator of this ban, a certain Eric Mar, sees it. Scott Rodrick, owner of ten McDonalds outlets in San Francisco, is understandably not overly enthusiastic. He complains that the city council has thus banned the term "Happy" from the popular children's meals. Councillor Mar, however, defends the decision: it is not a ban on "Happy Meals", but merely an incentive to serve healthier food. Happy Meal, unhappy Meal or whatever: whether the new law will make American kids less fat as they roll through the streets of San Francisco remains questionable. But hope dies last, after all ...

The SRG Executive Board now only has seven members. Previously, it had nine members and four additional "participants". As part of the convergence of radio and TV, the Board of Directors decided on the new structure at the request of the new Director General Roger de Weck.

The new management organization is to come into force by the end of February 2011, as SRG announced on Thursday. Roger de Weck will officially take over from Armin Walpen on January 1, 2011.
In future, the four regional directors will also take on national tasks. Dino Balestra (Director of RSI) will coordinate the reorganization of the networks within SRG. Gilles Marchand (Director of RTS) is responsible for Group marketing and international relations. Rudolf Matter (designated Director of Swiss Radio and Television, SRF) is leading the work on methods for measuring the audience success of multimedia TV-radio offerings. Mariano Tschuor (Director of RTR) coordinates the program cooperation of the four language regions as well as the national programs and multimedia offerings.
Finance Director Daniel Jorio is also a member of the Executive Board. Another new member is the Director of Operations, who has not yet been elected. This new function is responsible for systems, processes, technology and national projects in production, IT and support, as well as for real estate.
Swissinfo Director Peter Schibli is leaving the General Management, as SRG spokesperson Daniel Steiner told the news agency SDA. He will remain head of Swissinfo. The current Director of Television Ueli Haldimann and the current Director of Radio Iso Rechsteiner are also leaving the General Management. As part of the convergence process, Rudolf Matter will take over their responsibilities. Haldimann is leaving SRG at the end of the year, Steiner explained according to SDA. Rechsteiner will remain with SRG as Deputy Head of the Programs Department and as SRF Program Officer.
In future, the four current "participants" in the Executive Board will only be "consulted on a specialist basis": Gérard Tschopp, Thomas Waldmeier, Rainer Keller and Max Gurtner.
General Secretariat is created
A new General Secretariat will be created to bundle the following tasks: Market research and now the review of the quality of programs, preliminary work on strategy, reporting and risk management and the legal service. The Secretary General - like the Director of Operations - is to be appointed by the Board of Directors on December 16.
According to the SRG press release, the media world is in a state of upheaval. Technology and the media behavior of fee-payers are changing. SRG and Switzerland as a media center must hold their own against global multimedia providers. "I am counting on teamwork and good cooperation between the Directorate General and the four regions," Roger de Weck is quoted as saying in the press release.
By the end of February, elections will be held for other positions to be filled at the second management level. Vacancies will initially be advertised internally. De Weck comments: "SRG SSR has many high-profile executives. They should have the opportunity to take on further responsibility."
