Federal Council should continue to set television fees

The reception fees for radio and television should not be set by Parliament. The Committee for Transport and Telecommunications (KVF) of the Council of States is in favor of the competence remaining with the Federal Council.

The KVF recommends that the Council of States reject the parliamentary initiative by National Councillor Natalie Rickli (SVP/ZH) by 8 votes to 3 with one abstention, as reported by the Parliamentary Services on Tuesday. In the opinion of the initiator, parliament is better suited to represent the interests of fee payers. This would lead to lower fees. For the majority of the Council of States committee, this would only lead to an "unnecessary politicization of the question of fees and programming". This could jeopardize the constitutional mandate, namely the promotion of the formation of political opinion and will and cultural diversity in all parts of the country.
At its meeting, the KVF spoke out in favor of radio and television fees being levied in future, as proposed by the Federal Council in a report, irrespective of ownership of a receiver. So far, however, the KVF of the Council of States has only signaled its agreement in principle. It wants to define even more precisely who should be exempt from the fees. To this end, it wants to revise the text of the motion that was approved by the National Council's sister committee.

RTL Group with profit boost

Europe's largest television group, RTL Group, continues to benefit from the boom in TV advertising. According to figures released Tuesday, the Luxembourg-based group saw its operating profit for the third quarter rise by half to 133 million euros.

Revenues climbed by 9 percent to 1.16 billion euros. Like rival ProSiebenSat.1, RTL Group has been benefiting for a good year from the fact that many companies from industry and commerce are once again spending significantly more money on TV advertising spots. Previously, advertising bookings had slumped by more than ten percent in some cases due to the financial crisis. The Bertelsmann-owned broadcasting group is sticking to its expectations for this year: Business results should be "significantly better" than in 2009.

Last but not least: The Queen leaves nothing to chance when it comes to new media

First her own website, then YouTube, Flickr, and Twitter — Queen Elizabeth II may be 84 years old, but she’s still keeping up with the times. As of Monday, the British queen also has a Facebook profile.

On the site, users are informed daily about dates and news from the British royal family. Photos and videos of Charles and Camilla and Princes William and Harry are also available. However, there is not much personal information about Her Majesty on Facebook. The messages are more like the good old court report. And anyone who has the feeling that the Queen is hitting the keys herself is also mistaken. She prefers to leave the communicating to her staff. And it's a pity that the Queen doesn't accept friend requests. So you can't become Her Majesty's "friend" via Facebook either.

Xing with more profit, Facebook with more advertising

The online networks Facebook and Xing continue to boom. While Facebook is benefiting from increased advertising revenue, the career site Xing was able to multiply its profits in the third quarter thanks to a surge in new members.

Xing recorded a surplus of 2.1 million euros after 340,000 euros in the same period last year, as the Hamburg-based Internet company announced on Tuesday. The number of users rose by almost half a million, bringing the company's membership to more than ten million. Turnover rose by a fifth to 13.8 million euros. Xing primarily earns money from the contributions of its premium members.
In contrast, the US company Facebook, with around 500 million users, relies primarily on income from advertising banners. As the internet giant does not publish any business figures, advertising revenue can only be estimated. According to a new study, however, Facebook can secure a large slice of the advertising pie in the world's largest advertising market, the USA, thanks to its strategy. In America, one in four advertising banners appeared on Facebook in the past quarter, as the internet consulting firm Comscore found out. That was more than its rivals Yahoo, Microsoft, Google and News Corp combined. Rupert Murdoch's media group also owns the music network MySpace. According to analysts, Facebook is not yet able to charge as much for its advertising as its competitors, but is catching up.
