Rose d'Or Festival: Markus Helbling new director

Following the 50th Rose d'Or Festival in September 2010, the Rose d'Or is realigning itself for the next decade: The festival will once again take place on its traditional date in the spring. Markus Helbling will become the new director.

The return of the Rose d'Or Festival from fall to spring is in line with the needs of the international TV industry, according to a press release issued on Wednesday. The next Awards Ceremony will now take place on May 10, 2012 at the KKL in Lucerne. It will be the highlight of the Rose dOr Festival Week, which runs from May 6 to 10, 2012 and will offer events and forums for national and international television professionals as well as for the people of Lucerne.
However, the Rose dOr Festival will begin in May 2011 with the announcement of the 51st Rose dOr competition. Television professionals from all over the world are then invited to submit their programs. The nominees in the individual award categories will be announced in November 2011. And in May 2012, a top-class jury of television experts will decide who will receive the Golden Roses at the 51st Awards Ceremony in Lucerne.
Rose d'Or all year round
For the first time, the Rose d'Or also offers current contributions on developments in the world of television during the year and allows different voices to have their say. The Rose dOr thus builds on the forum events of the last festival and offers the television industry a platform that enables an ongoing exchange and discussion. Unlike in the past, from 2011 the Rose dOr Festival will no longer be limited to the festival days and the annual awards ceremony.
Realignment of the competition
The Rose dOr competition will once again focus on its original objective: honoring the best formats and programs from the world of television entertainment. For this reason, the existing catalog of categories will be revised. It will be streamlined and simplified and will also take even greater account of trends in television entertainment. The competition will now be largely web-based. This will give the jury the opportunity to evaluate the competition entries online in future.
Change in the Rose dOr management
At the end of November, Festival Director Rolf Probala hands over the reins to Markus Helbling, who has been Managing Director and Co-Director of Rose dOr AG since October 2010. Rolf Probala took over the management of the Rose d'Or at short notice in December 2009. He organized the 50th Rose dOr Festival, which took place in Lucerne in September, and successfully guided the Rose dOr through its anniversary year in 2010. Rolf Probala will continue to be available to the Rose dOr in an advisory role.

Graubünden receives Italian-language regional journal

After years of disputes over reporting from Graubünden, the Italian-language radio and television broadcaster RSI and the canton of Graubünden have reached an agreement. RSI will launch a regional news program in Italian on the radio for the Alpine canton.

The VHF station Rete Uno will report on events in the canton in a five to ten-minute program from Monday to Friday evenings, as RSI director Dino Balestra explained in Chur on Wednesday, according to SDA. The new news journal will be aimed at the approximately 20,000 Italian-speaking inhabitants of Graubünden from next February and will only be broadcast in the canton.
RSI is increasing its team of editors for Graubünden from four to a maximum of 6.5 full-time positions. In doing so, the broadcaster is fulfilling the canton's long-standing request to provide the Italian-speaking part of Graubünden with more information on current affairs from the whole of the canton. In return, the canton is dropping a supervisory complaint submitted to the Federal Office of Communications (Bakom) in September 2009, said Cantonal Councillor Claudio Lardi. Graubünden complained that RSI was not fulfilling its concession mandate as it was providing insufficient information to the Italian-speaking people of Graubünden.
The agreement between RSI and the canton was only reached after Bakom Director Martin Dumermuth took the lead in negotiations between the parties. Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard granted approval for the new regional journal on November 3.

Las-Alps- infoteca": Media House of the Alps planned in Chur

Romansh radio and television have launched the idea of a so-called «Las-Alps-infoteca.» The groundwork will be laid at a conference in Chur on Friday and Saturday.

Over 100 representatives from politics, administration, the media, business and non-governmental organizations are taking part in the conference in the Grand Council building. They will discuss the necessity and feasibility of a Media House of the Alps, as Radio e Televisium Rumantscha (RTR) in Chur reported according to SDA.
Federal Councillor Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf will give a speech entitled "The Alpine region - a single entity?". Professor Werner Bätzing from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany) will speak on "The necessity of a media house for sustainable Alpine development".
The aim is to launch "Las-Alps-infoteca" as a hub for information from the Alps about the Alps, both in terms of content and organization. At the end of the conference, a project organization for the development of the competence center for media in the Alps is to be specified.
According to RTR, it intends to initiate the project. However, it will not be up to RTR or SRG to carry or manage "Las-Alps-infoteca".
The Media House of the Alps will deal with topics that concern people throughout the Alpine arc. The plan is to build up a network to offer such topics to an international audience. In a second step, "Las-Alps-infoteca" will produce its own journalistic products.

Google: Ten percent more pay for employees

All 23,000 Google employees will receive a 10 percent pay raise in 2011. According to media reports, Google CEO Eric Schmidt announced the raise in an email.

In addition, all employees of the Internet company worldwide would receive a Christmas bonus of 1000 dollars, reported an American blog according to SDA. The salary increase could cost Google up to one billion dollars a year, the blog, which also published the full text of the email, estimated. Google only made an evasive comment on the pay rise. "While we don't typically comment on internal matters, we believe competitive pay is important to the future of the company," a spokesperson said.
Google is considered one of the most attractive employers, not least thanks to numerous additional benefits for employees - from free snacks to hairdressing, cleaning and a gym at the workplace. In the meantime, however, the internet company has reduced such benefits somewhat. Many talented software developers and managers also see greater future opportunities at younger companies - above all at the world's largest online network, Facebook. Most recently, for example, the respected software developer Lars Rasmussen, who played a leading role in developing the Google Maps map service and the Google Wave communication program, moved to Facebook.

SF: Source protection for blog commentary

The Federal Supreme Court has issued a landmark ruling in favor of media freedom: Media companies may withhold the identities of blog commenters from the courts, provided their comments contain a minimum amount of information.

With its decision, the First Public Law Division of the Federal Supreme Court has upheld an appeal by Swiss Television (SF), as reported by SDA on Wednesday. The case revolves around a blog from 2009 on the SF homepage for the program "Alpenfestung, Leben im Reduit". A person had written a comment under a false name, which made less reference to the blog than to a private account. Because of this post, the Zug public prosecutor's office received a complaint against unknown persons for defamation and misuse of a telecommunications system.
The public prosecutor subsequently asked SF to provide it with the IP address of the author of the blog commentary. SF, however, invoked the protection of sources for media companies provided for in Article 28 of the Swiss Criminal Code. This provision allows regular media outlets to refuse to disclose the identity of informants to the prosecution authorities. In this case, however, the editors themselves must answer for any criminal content of the article - such as defamation or libel.
Great importance for media freedom
In their deliberations on Wednesday, the judges in Lausanne have now decided that media companies can in principle also invoke this protection of sources with regard to the authors of comments on blogs on their websites. The prerequisite is that the commentary contains a minimum amount of information. However, there are no high requirements to be met, especially as it is not always easy to distinguish between information and entertainment in certain forms of journalism nowadays.
In the specific case, at least part of the commentary was informative, which is why SF could invoke the protection of sources. Several judges emphasized that Wednesday's decision was of great importance for editorial secrecy and media freedom. It protects the watchdog function of the media in Switzerland.
