KVF against TV station for national cohesion

Swiss television should do more to promote national cohesion. The National Council's Telecommunications Commission (KVF) shares this view of the Council of States. However, the KVF does not intend to create a new television channel for this purpose.

The Commission is thus contradicting the Council of States, which last June called for a separate television channel on which programmes from the other language regions would be broadcast with subtitles or synchronized. The KVF has now deleted this passage from the Council of States' motion, as reported by the Parliamentary Services on Tuesday. However, the committee considers it necessary to urge the SRG to make a greater commitment to the exchange between the different language regions and cultures within the framework of the existing concession. The Federal Council is also requested to monitor developments and report back to Parliament by the end of 2012.

Last but not least: Is the Tagi becoming the mouthpiece of the SVP?

Now that the Baz seems to be falling into the hands of the SVP, the Tagesanzeiger is also at risk of shifting to the right. An unfortunate coincidence between editorial content and advertising has raised suspicions that the paper has allied itself with the SVP in the battle over the deportation initiative.

It has often happened that editorial content goes well with the adjacent advertising (e.g. here). However, the following case, which was brought to the attention of our editorial team by an attentive Werbewoche reader, is quite extraordinary: Anyone lingering on Tagesanzeiger.ch/kultur on Saturday morning came across the article "Get rid of Santa Claus!". The report is about a TV commercial in which Migros actually has the "Wienachtsmaa" show up at Christmas instead of the Christ Child. Scandalous! After all, Santa Claus has no place in this country and should be deported! It would be nonsensical to accuse the Tagi of cooperating with the SVP. What is suspicious, however, is that at the same time a multi-part advertising banner flickers across the screen to the right of the article, promoting the SVP's deportation initiative. A conspiracy, it's as clear as day! Here is our detective's evidence:

Affichage sues over expansion in Greece

The advertising agency Affichage is suing its former business partners in Greece. When it entered the Greek market in 2005—a venture that has since proven to be a major source of problems—the Geneva-based company claims it was taken advantage of.

The lawsuits are directed against businessman Philip Vrionis and his family and are based on "fraud and misrepresentation", as Affichage announced on Monday. Vrionis had swindled the company into paying too high a purchase price with false information, a spokesperson for the company told the SDA news agency. "In fact, Affichage paid far too much," said the spokesperson. Affichage now has sufficient means to take legal action against its former business partners: "The facts of the case now allow us to take this step," the spokesperson continued. An internal report was presented to shareholders on May 25.
A former Affichage management member is also being targeted. The Board of Directors has filed a liability claim against the manager, who no longer works at Affichage. This is in connection with the Greek business, but there are also "further investigations", it was announced.
In addition, two shareholders from Zollikon have filed a request for atonement against current and former officers of the Affichage Group, it was further announced. A request for atonement is the first step towards initiating civil proceedings.

Difficult business
The Greek business has proved disastrous for Affichage. Over the last few years, it has cost the company 100 million francs in write-offs. Not only the opaque business practices of its Greek partners, but also political unrest and a controversial ban on tobacco advertising have hit the company hard. In 2009, the loss in Greece swelled from CHF 11.4 million to CHF 86.3 million. The company as a whole suffered a net loss of 59.1 million francs in 2009.
A new management team is working on shrinking the Greek business back to health. The company is also examining a sale to a local investor as a possible option, said the spokesperson. Liquidation of the commitment in the south-eastern European country is conceivable, but would only be carried out in extreme cases.
