Publicitas: Advertising agency for Bieler Tagblatt, Journal du Jura and Bijou discontinued

On Thursday, April 14, Publicitas decided on its own initiative to discontinue advertising services for the Biel-based publishing house W. Gassmann (Bieler Tagblatt, Journal du Jura) effective April 18. The publishing house regrets this decision.

Publicitas is thus bidding farewell to neutral universal ad placement and will no longer be able to fully advise and serve its customers. The publisher writes this in a press release. The media of Gassmann Verlag will remain bookable at any time, directly with Gassmann Media.

The reason for the mediation stop is the new, significantly more expensive mediation commission agreement, which the publisher was unable to accept. With this decision, Publicitas is rejecting what the publisher considers to be a correct and fair compromise offer, the press release continues. The new price models and conditions demanded by Publicitas are not economically viable for W. Gassmann's regional products. The publisher fears that these could damage the products and also lead to rising advertising prices.

The W. Gassmann family business in the bilingual Biel - Seeland - Bernese Jura region produces two regional daily newspapers (Bieler Tagblatt and Journal du Jura) and two weekly newspapers in the Bernese Jura (Echo du Bas-Vallon, Le Progrès Courrier). It also markets the advertising combination "Der Zeitungspool Biel-Freiburg-Wallis" through Gassmann Media. The titles Bieler Tagblatt, Journal du Jura, Bijou, Le Progrès Courrier, Echo du Bas-Vallon and Der Zeitungspool will remain available to customers.

Books as new territory for advertisers and sponsors

Will publishers and advertisers seize the opportunity presented to them at zero hour in the e-book trade? Or will newcomers from outside the industry do the business?

Up to now, advertising in books has made little sense: print runs and therefore reach are often far too low and, above all, it remains unclear when an advertising message will have an impact, which is often very delayed. With the advent of e-readers and e-books, books are now also becoming an interesting advertising medium. Advertising messages can be inserted into an e-book at the time of purchase and are tailored to the buyer. The German Publishers and Booksellers Association has declared 2011 to be the zero hour for the e-book and its managing director can be quoted as saying "2011 will see the real breakthrough for the e-book on the market". How the digitization of the book market, which has so far been largely spared the whirlwind of change brought about by the Internet, will progress is indeed one of the most exciting questions in the media sector at the moment. Many augurs point to the USA, where major booksellers such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble already sell more electronic books than paper books. The American Association of Book Publishers (AAP) reported a 164.4 percent increase in e-book sales in 2010 compared to the previous year, with e-book sales accounting for 8.32 percent of book sales. Key drivers of this development are falling prices for e-readers and the increasing use of smartphones and tablet PCs.

In the upcoming transformation, the book industry will in many ways be able to take its cue from the music industry, which already suffered the fate of digitization around ten years ago. Sales of recorded music have slumped rapidly, with heaps of pirated digital copies circulating in the dark corners of the internet. However, more and more music is being purchased legally online - albeit often only individual tracks and not entire albums. And new online distribution channels have been established, most notably Apple's iTunes. But the music industry is not in ruins - although it has changed profoundly. Important new sources of income are live concerts, which now offer far more show elements than in the past. Ticket prices have risen significantly, especially for well-known names. The merchandising sector has been greatly expanded, where it is no longer just a few black T-shirts that are on offer. Clever marketers are making just as much money with expensive limited-edition collector's items as they are with cheaper mass-produced fan merchandise of all kinds. It's no longer just about selling music, but a certain lifestyle - with the intention of offering potent sponsors a correspondingly attractive platform.

Hungary's media council stops Ringier/Springer merger

The Hungarian Media Council is reported to have spoken out against a merger between Axel Springer Verlag and Ringier Verlag. According to the NMHH, the country's top media regulatory body, a merger would jeopardize media diversity.

Specifically, an analysis has shown that the merger of the Hungarian papers clearly and significantly endangers the legal right to diverse sources of information, as guaranteed by the Media Act. This was said by authority spokeswoman Karloa Kiricsi, according to Pesterlloyd.net. Therefore, the approval for the merger was not given, the Media Council wrote on its website on Thursday.

According to a provision in the new Hungarian media law, the ruling of the Media Council is binding for the Competition Authority GVH. The statement is based on an inquiry made by the Office of Economic Competition at the beginning of the year, as reported by the Balaton Newspaper, Hungary's German-language monthly newspaper. The Hungarian part of the Axel Springer Group owns a daily business newspaper, regional newspapers and numerous weekly magazines. Ringier Springer and wanted to merge their holdings in five Eastern European countries.

Imprint and Presse Suisse: Partial revision of the press collective agreement for Western Switzerland

The partial revision of the Western Switzerland Press Collective Agreement - Convention Collective de Travail - negotiated between Imprint and Presse Suisse was accepted by the publishers. This means better working conditions, the adaptation of copyrights to multimedia use, and a fundamental modernization of the CCT.

After the delegates' assembly of impressum accepted the negotiation result between the delegations of impressum and Presse Suisse at their meeting in Zurich on March 25, 2011, the umbrella organization of publishers in French-speaking Switzerland now also gave its approval for the new CCT at its general assembly. impressum is satisfied and now hopes that this step will also set a precedent in German-speaking Switzerland. This is what impressum wrote in a communiqué on Friday.

The partially revised CCT provides for new standards in health protection at the workplace, it introduces the possibility of intervention by neutral external persons in the case of labor conflicts and harassment, it defines anti-bullying and anti-discrimination standards. This document modernizes the CCT to take into account work situations that are becoming increasingly difficult for many journalists, especially in the wake of the crisis, the statement added. At the same time, these provisions serve companies to prevent unproductive work absences due to illness.

Another innovation of the CCT is the automatic assignment of copyrights of permanent employees and freelancers in the multimedia area (Internet, cell phones, tablets). The assignment of such rights is compensated for freelancers - journalists and photographers - with an increase in minimum fees of 10 percent. A further increase is provided for publishers who wish to claim additional rights to multiple publication in the same title or in associated head sheets. In this case, the assignment of rights is compensated with an increase of 15 percent of the fee, in addition to the multimedia rights. This applies primarily to articles and photos realized on order for a specific title.

The CCT can now not be terminated by any partner before December 31, 2012 for December 31, 2013. In this way, the CCT, in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, is valid for an unlimited period.
