Press Council: Complaint against Tagesanzeiger and Blick Online rejected

The Swiss Press Council has rejected a complaint that reports by Tagesanzeiger and Blick Online violated journalistic guidelines. The issue was the identifiability of a child in connection with a criminal trial.

At the end of 2010, a 44-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman stood before a Zurich jury. They had to answer for severe child abuse. The victims were the 44-year-old's two young daughters. The younger one had died in May 2006 at the age of five. Her three-year-old half-sister was placed in the care of a foster family.

Tagesanzeiger and Blick Online named the girls' first names in their trial reports and mentioned that the surviving child was now living with a foster family. Blick Online illustrated the report with a picture of the two children, on which the face of the surviving girl was made unrecognizable.

According to the association Espoir, which works for children in need, this reporting made the child identifiable. All the more so because the girl's name was rare and her current age could be easily deduced.

Journalist guidelines violated

The association turned to the Press Council with a complaint. The two media outlets had violated the regulation on identification and special protection needs of children in the "Declarations of Duties and Rights of Journalists," it claimed.

The Press Council took a different view. Neither the mention of the first names, nor the information about the current living conditions, nor the several years old pictures with the face made unrecognizable in addition allowed an identification "beyond the circle of the already initiated". The two media had thus not violated the guidelines. (SDA)

TBS Identity: Online portfolio created for photographers

TBS Identity has created a new website for photographer Geri Krischker. The understated, almost spartan design, with plenty of white space, puts the photographer’s work front and center.

The picture gallery with scroll function, specially designed for this website, is intended to make you want to browse and explore the more than 400 photos. An interview with direct and authentic answers gives the photographer Geri Krischker a face. In addition to the public portfolio, a simple image approval tool has been created, which Geri Krischker's customers can use to view a series of images, make a pre-selection and send them directly to the photographer.

To the website: Gkrischker.com.

Public Relations: Agency market recovered somewhat in 2010

The market for PR agencies in Switzerland stabilized in 2010. After a 9.2% decline in fee income in 2009, the turnover survey and market statistics of the Swiss Association of PR Agencies (BPRA) show signs of recovery.

The PR agencies that are members of the BPRA generated fee income of CHF 67.1 million in the 2010 financial year (previous year: CHF 67.7 million). While turnover fell by - 0.9 percent, the number of employees in the association's member agencies rose by two percent to 309. The industry is cautiously optimistic for the current financial year.

There were revenue winners and losers in all provider categories. Providers that specialize in certain sectors or offerings tended to perform better, according to the BPRA. The smaller agencies are under pressure. The market continues to be led by the two agencies Farner Consulting and Burson-Marsteller (see Agency overview). With the founding of the new agency YJOO and the repositioning of Grayling (formerly Trimedia), the positioning of the following agencies has changed. With Freicom, YJOO, Grayling, Communicators and Furrer Hugi & Partner, a new field of larger agencies has emerged.

According to the association, the market trends show an increased demand for full services. The project business continues to grow and demand remains volatile. Demand is rising, particularly in the areas of digital communication, traditional reputation management and dealing with public transparency requirements and more active stakeholder groups. Although there is an increasing number of international contacts on the client side, the PR business of local agencies remains primarily focused on the Swiss market.

Last but not least: When men show their softer side

Tough on the outside, soft on the inside—that’s what makes not only men irresistible, but also Cornet ice cream cones. Unilever has brought the two together. It’s to die for.

Unilever uses a cute teddy bear to advertise its Cornetto Enigma ice cream creations. The idea: When men taste the ice cream, their softer side comes out. They immediately turn into an incredibly cute teddy bear that's great to cuddle up to. Of course, it's hard to resist this sweet temptation.

Facebook: "Send" button launched

Around a year ago, Facebook introduced the "Like" button, which can be integrated into other websites. Since Monday, there has been another button: the "Send" button.

With the "Send" button, recommended websites, images and videos will no longer be distributed to all contacts in future, but will instead be distributed to selected Facebook friends. Facebook announced this in its blog on Monday. Clicking on the button opens a window in which the user can select which group they want to recommend a website to without having to leave the group. The message then only reaches the group members and not everyone in the contact list. The function is currently available on around 50 websites, including the Huffington Post website. According to the blog entry, more will be added shortly.
