End for Ringier's iPad magazine The Collection

Ringier's single-topic tablet magazine, *The Collection*, is coming to an end after just two issues. The reason for the project's early end is a change in strategy in the app business.

One of the main reasons for the changeover was the poor sales figures. This is what the former CEO of The Collection, Thomas Trüb, told Medienwoche.ch. At the launch of the magazine, Trüb was still confident. He said as recently as April that he wanted to launch more topics on a regular basis.

Ringier launches monothematic tablet magazine

The two monothematic magazines appeared on the theme of "Royal Wedding" and the "Global Baby".

Ringier: Second issue of The Collection published

But the recipe for success of elaborate journalism did not work, at least not for this iPad magazine. The Collection did not sell as well as expected, says Trüb in an interview with Medienwoche. In addition, the marketing effort to boost sales would have been too great. So Ringier decided to adjust its business model and say goodbye to user financing. Now Ringier wants to have its independent publishing apps financed by partners and sponsors. However, this does not apply to the apps of existing newspapers and magazines. Readers will continue to pay for these as well. Ringier will do without an editor-in-chief for the future development of apps. Instead, project teams will work under temporary management.

It is surprising that Ringier is abandoning the project after just two issues. According to Medienwoche, Ringier is not only prepared to take risks, but also to react quickly if the project fails. They have clearly learned that the end consumer is no longer willing to pay for content. Whether this is true, or whether the end consumer was simply not impressed by the choice of topics, is difficult to say in this case, after just two issues.

TBWA: Pro Juventute saves lives

The TBWA agency has launched a hard-hitting campaign for Pro Juventute aimed at preventing youth suicide. Following an agency evaluation, TBWA/Zurich impressed Pro Juventute and was selected to develop and implement a new strategy.

After an intensive examination of the organization as well as the Pro Juventute brand and its products/services, a flagship approach was chosen and a new national campaign was conceived. With this campaign, Pro Juventute draws attention to the topic of youth suicide and the emergency number 147. TV was chosen as the lead medium.

Taking into account tight financial constraints, the agency worked on an easy-to-implement idea that is emotionally catchy, according to a statement from the agency. In collaboration with Markenfilm and its director Stefan Usteri, a spot was created that is not only touching, but is also intended to generate donations. The TV spot has been broadcast since September 19, 2011 on national and regional TV channels in all three parts and languages of the country. The spot is supplemented by various BTL measures.

Suicide is the second most common cause of death among Swiss adolescents. This means that our country has one of the highest youth suicide rates in Western Europe. Despite this sad fact, the subject is taboo, the agency said. Pro Juventute supports children and young people throughout Switzerland with their parents on their way to becoming self- and socially responsible personalities, it said. With "Beratung + Hilfe 147," the organization offers anonymous and free support around the clock to young people seeking help by phone, SMS or chat. The professional counseling regularly saves young people from suicide.

UBS stops all advertising campaigns

In light of the billion-dollar debacle in London, UBS has suspended its advertising and print campaigns worldwide that were handled by the advertising agency Publicis. All TV commercials and print ads have been put on hold.

The stop initially applies for the next one to two weeks. This was confirmed by the UBS media office at the request of the Sonntag newspaper. After that, it will be decided whether the entire advertising offensive will be postponed, discontinued or resumed.

The reason for the suspension is the bad news situation. It makes no sense to run a commercial advertising campaign aimed at building trust and competence if, at the same time, research is published on a case that has not yet been illuminated in all its details, as Peter Hartmeier, head of corporate communications at UBS Switzerland, told the media newsletter Klein Report. Subsequently, the advertising phase could then begin again.

Hartmeier could not say on Monday how long the advertising will be suspended. The decision was made when the 2.3 billion debacle in London became known. UBS had startled investors and the public on Thursday with a profit warning. Due to unauthorized speculation by a trader in London, there may be a loss in the current third quarter. In total, the trader gambled away 2.3 billion dollars. He is in custody.

Design Mile 2011

Some of Zurich’s most renowned design agencies are offering a glimpse into their work environments. During the Design Mile on Saturday, November 19, 2011, they will open their doors to the public from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Design Mile, which is being organized by the organizers of Blickfang for the 10th time this year, offers a week before Blickfang the opportunity to take a look at the working methods of designers. A shuttle bus will take visitors from one office to another. A plan with the individual stops and all information will be available from October 1, 2011 at Designmile.ch.

The fact is that the shape of a mineral water bottle, a toothbrush or a streetcar is based on the complex process of design, according to the organizer in a press release. This process is always caught between aesthetics and functionality, zeitgeist and practical application. Good design is never just about questions of fashion or good style; factors of ergonomics, safety, haptics, ecology, economy and identity must always be taken into account. Experts and manufacturers have long known that products are difficult to sell on the basis of purely qualitative features, so what needs to be taken into account in packaging concepts? What needs to be considered when designing a public bus stop and how can we imagine the development of a corporate identity?

Participating in the Design Mile 2011 are:
- Brands and Minds
- Office 4
- Christophe Marchand Design
- Shaped pole
- Mezzanine Books
- Meta Design Suisse
- Product Design Zurich
- Tribecraft
- Yolk
