Mediafocus September: Strong growth in election advertising, search portals and headwear

The advertising month of September was a precision landing compared to the same period last year. At 0.3% above the previous year, gross advertising pressure was almost as strong. The election and party advertising segments, internet directories and search portals as well as the headwear segment recorded strong growth.

Not surprisingly, the election and party advertising segment increased significantly in September to CHF 12.2 million. This corresponds to an increase of 622.4 percent. Thanks to the charm offensive for Google's Street View product, the Internet directories and search portals segment also had an outstanding advertising month in September with CHF 3.2 million, which corresponds to an increase of 463.9%. Despite the still summery weather in September, the headwear segment recorded significant year-on-year growth of CHF 1.2 million and an increase of 913.5%.

Now that the National Council is of the opinion that young people should be better protected from the personal debt trap and is in favour of an advertising ban on small loans, the latest Mediafocus report reveals just how much advertising this would ban from the advertising stage The small, cash and personal loans segment generated a gross advertising volume of just over 12 million Swiss francs in the current year. In 2010, the advertising volume amounted to 15.4 million Swiss francs. This roughly corresponds to that of the coffee, tea and cocoa segment (15.8 million in the current year).

According to Media Focus, if the National Council's opinion were to be implemented, it would not be the print media or TV marketers who would primarily have to forego the advertising volume, but the poster providers. With a share of over 40 percent, one can speak of a high affinity for outdoor advertising. However, the market is not very fragmented. The top four advertisers account for over 90% of the advertising volume.

The implementation of the advertising ban in the area of search engine advertising would be interesting. According to the SEA market analysis by Media Focus, the credit and financing market invests around CHF 110,000 per month, with a significantly higher number of providers, including some of the more dubious types.

Swisscom launches media courses for schoolchildren throughout Switzerland

Swisscom is now offering media courses for high school students throughout Switzerland. Four optional modules cover topics such as media use, the law, social networks, and online safety.

The new media guide Enter is now also available and provides useful tips and information on the topic of online safety. Media skills are becoming increasingly important in order to deal responsibly and safely with the challenges of the Internet, according to a press release issued by Swisscom on Tuesday. It is therefore now offering media courses for upper school classes throughout Switzerland. Teachers can choose between the four modules "The fascination of new media", "Rights on the Internet", "Social networks" and "Safe surfing". With the support of the teacher and a Swisscom expert, the pupils work together in groups, reflect on their own media behavior and learn how to deal with the dangers and challenges.

The first courses have already been held in seven municipalities. Due to the great demand - more than 200 teachers have already registered - the offer is now being extended to the whole of Switzerland and will be permanently included in the range of courses, Swisscom continues. The aim is for every third high school student to have attended a Swisscom media course over the next few years. The new courses are part of the corporate responsibility strategy and are intended to show that Swisscom is aware of its social responsibility.

Znip Znap and Seitenkick open virtual factory and museum for Rivella

This spring, Seitenkick launched the new Rivella brand website. Under the overall supervision of Znip Znap, the site has been gradually expanded over the past few months. In addition to a virtual tour of the production facilities, the online museum also opened this week.

Via the "Production" menu or by clicking on the factory building in the village square of Rivella.ch you enter the virtual Rivella factory. The factory is built in front of the visitor's eyes on a greenfield site. In the schematic view, visitors can learn more about the individual production steps of Rivella - sometimes supplemented with unique films. Nothing is hidden from the visitor except the recipe. This remains a closely guarded secret.

Over the course of six months, kilometers of old film reels from the Rivella archive were digitized. As was to be expected, some of the forgotten gems of Rivella's history have been brought back to life. Visitors to Rivella.ch can find these films and much more in the newly opened museum. Click on the building or on the "History" menu to open the Rivella history book and bring the last 60 years of Rivella to life. The first English Rivella animated film from 1957 and legendary commercials in Japanese from 1983 are just two of the countless highlights from over 150 films and almost as many photos

Responsible at Rivella: Cornelia Marending (Head of Marketing), Beatrix Grosso (Senior Product Manager), Silvan Brauen (Product Manager). Responsible at Znip Znap: Patrik Marty (overall responsibility, concept, content). Responsible at Seitenkick: Tuan Nguyen (concept, design, production).

Internet gives press photographers a hard time

Press photography is increasingly becoming a bread-and-butter business. The unbroken trend towards more topicality and lower quality photos in the print media is causing problems for the industry. New internet platforms are now enabling smartphone users to sell their snapshots directly to the media.

"The world is changing. Like other professions, we have to evolve. Anyone who just waits and complains will go under," says press photographer Thomas Studhalter to Pressetext.

The ever-improving cameras on smartphones have led to amateur photos slowly finding their way into the media. Apps such as Scoopshot or Tackable promote this process. Each photo can be sold directly to media companies. Prices are typically around 30 euros per shot. "That's not so bad. Large photo agencies put much more pressure on photographers. They usually only pay a few cents per photo. In addition, unlike amateurs, they also destroy the lucrative business with the magazines," says Studhalter.

Daily news media have always paid relatively little for photos. However, due to the economic and time-related competitive pressure from the Internet, the market is increasingly collapsing. "Even with quality media, the quality of the photos is becoming less and less important. Speed is all that counts," says Studhalter. Technical developments are also putting pressure on photographers on another front. "In a few years, the quality of video recordings will be so good that perfect still images can be extracted. Then photographers will no longer be sent out, only VJs," explains Studhalter.

The changes in the press photo business are also opening up opportunities for photographers. "The business community is keen to distance itself from press photos, which are tending to get worse. There are opportunities for photographers here. The next generation should also learn to shoot moving images. In the future, new business areas will also open up in direct cooperation with online portals. I am optimistic," says Studhalter. According to the professional, technical know-how also pays off. 3D photography and panoramic photos, for example, are opening up new markets. (Press release)

ADC judging: the race is on

Advertisers, designers, filmmakers, programmers, photographers, illustrators, musicians, marketers, graphic designers, copywriters, concept developers, media planners, innovators, and inventors can now submit their best work for consideration by the ADC jury.

"Made in Switzerland" is a seal of quality that stands for the highest quality all over the world, according to a press release issued on Monday. This applies equally to watches and high-tech, chocolate and typography, athletics meetings and Swiss Graphic Design and advertising. The standards of ADC Switzerland, which is more than just the Swiss championship of creativity, are correspondingly high. The best of the ADC judging is often also among the best in international competitions. And not only in the classic advertising categories, but also in categories such as design, photography, illustration and digital. Judging is therefore based on international standards and qualitative criteria - systems such as 7+ and 3Q help with this.

The invitation to tender is now available here can be invited. The closing date for entries is November 24.
