Last but not least: A cell phone reduced to the maximum

The Ownfone is the first cell phone on the market that can only be used to call permanently assigned contacts. An ingenious concept for the very young and very old.

The idea of producing simple, low-function cell phones against the general trend towards upgrades is nothing new: niche providers have been supplying the market with cell phones for senior citizens and construction workers for years. However, Ownfone, which was launched in the UK, pulls out all the stops when it comes to user-friendliness and a lack of functions: the device is configured online before purchase and designed. You can choose between two, four, eight or twelve buttons. Each is assigned a number and each is given a name. The option of labeling buttons with photos is being planned.

Only these numbers can be dialed; there is no numeric keypad at all. Numbers can only be changed retrospectively with the help of customer service. If you want to add a new contact, you have to purchase a new front.

This uncompromising reduction should make sense to anyone who has ever tried to explain a Nokia cell phone, however simple and outdated it may be, to an elderly person. And it probably makes sense to parents who want to give their young child an emergency phone to take to kindergarten and still don't want to buy an iPhone.

Frontwork: Promotional stand created for Midor

To showcase the new «Tradition» line of cookies, Frontwork created a mobile promotional stand for Midor that evokes the charm of a traditional bakery.

Frontwork realized the stand from the idea to production. The promotional staff can set up, dismantle and transport the stand themselves, as detailed in a press release. It will be used in various Migros centers throughout Switzerland.

Frontwork photographed the biscuits and their packaging and placed them in the bakery's shop window using a photomontage. The oven is a mock-up and the imprints are intended to give the impression of a bygone era. An antique cash register and scales as well as appropriately dressed stand personnel complete the scene, the press release continues.

SFLB: New umbrella brand campaign for Sanitas

In the new Sanitas campaign, the Spillmann/Felser/Leo Burnett agency shows that new stages in life require change.

The campaign shows how absurd it is to constantly love the same thing, the agency writes in a press release. The two TV commercials each highlight the life of a protagonist who is satisfied with the same thing all his life. One of them only ever eats ravioli from childhood to old age. And another never adapts his mullet hairstyle to his age or the new zeitgeist. The campaign alludes to Santias health insurance, which offers different insurance models for different phases of life.

The TV commercials will be supplemented with online measures. The new claim "A lifetime" is intended to position Sanitas as a reliable partner, according to the press release.

Frog off press: With Spick to the reading world champion title

With a hands-on workbook for fourth-grade students, this clever student magazine from Switzerland aims to help promote reading. The Spick Reading World Cup is designed to integrate the joy of sports and competition into the learning process.

In the Spick anniversary year, Künzler Bachmann Verlag from St. Gallen is publishing 10'000 booklets for the Spick Reading World Cup, which focuses on learning success through short, exciting stories. The initiative is also recommended by the Stiftung Lesen (Reading Foundation), according to a press release. There are six rounds of reading fun in the reading world championship. In each of these rounds, a text has to be read, the corresponding comprehension questions have to be answered and the reading speed has to be tested in another test. Since reading skills can vary greatly in different classes, all timings can be adjusted to the reading strength of the students.

Teachers can obtain a class set of the Spick World Reading Championship free of charge on request from the publisher. Texts and tests can be used throughout the school year according to learning progress and learning objectives, and a certificate for each student rounds off the championship.

Exhibition honors the product poster

The exhibition «The Magic of Things» at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich shines a spotlight on a particularly aesthetic advertising strategy: mundane everyday objects shine as objects of desire from billboards, tempting viewers to buy them.

A pair of shoes, a tube of toothpaste, a cleaning agent: even today, these are everyday objects that we take for granted. But never have they been so wonderfully staged and celebrated in posters as at the beginning of the 20th century. The German Lucian Bernhard recognized the advertising effectiveness of a compact fusion of product and brand name. In the early days of the brand article, the so-called product posters were intended to entice people to buy products that were only affordable for the upper classes in the interwar years. These product posters thus became the harbingers of our consumer society, without which branded articles and self-service stores would be inconceivable.

High point of the Sachplakats in the 1940s

The Sachplakat celebrated its real high point in Switzerland in the 1940s. This success was due both to the country's rapid economic upswing and to a particular affinity of Swiss design for this style of precise object fidelity. Bernhard's two-dimensional depiction, which presents objects without context, underwent a unique further development in the Swiss object poster. Important designers such as Niklaus Stoecklin, Peter Birkhäuser, Donald Brun and Otto Baumberger lent washing powder, a button or a spark plug a beguiling sensuality and a magical aura through the plastic, materially haptic close-up in the poster. The brand products also radiated emotional seductiveness through deliberately cast shadows and highlights as well as the effective interplay with other objects.

The end of the factual poster comes with the staging of the lifestyle

With the democratization of consumption at the beginning of the 1960s and the saturation of basic needs in Western society, advertising strategies changed again. The sole focus on the product and its brand name is no longer sufficient today. The lifeworlds associated with the product and the brand need to be staged in an increasingly elaborate way. The era of informative factual advertising has therefore become obsolete for the time being; consumers are being offered additional emotional values, "lifestyle". In cultural posters, however, the magical depiction of things is experiencing something of a renaissance with new means of design: removed from everyday life, their original aesthetics are revealed here and the familiar is seen in a new light.

Exhibition with classic posters, factual photographs and advertising films

The exhibition shows around 80 classics from the poster collection of the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich and juxtaposes them with factual photographs that illustrate similar tendencies in their focus on the essence of things. The advertising film, on the other hand, functions as a contrasting medium, usually focusing on the benefits of the products in a detailed narrative. The show thus takes a look at the development of product advertising in the course of social change.

Future of the Toni site

The poster collection will move to the collection center in the Toni-Areal at the end of 2013. Extensive preparations are already underway to make the approximately 350,000 posters ready for transportation to their future archive. The "Magic of Things" exhibition will therefore be another opportunity to show a selection of the classic posters held by the poster collection - one of the most extensive and important collections of its kind in the world.
