And last but not least: "Left-wing clean gangs" on Facebook

People believe that only «friends» can see their comments on Facebook. But then the comment ends up in the public eye, and people have to step down from their positions. Are some people simply uninformed, or is it a good thing that such comments are punished?

A board member of the SVP Steffisburg BE wrote a nasty comment on Facebook about the ban on plastic bags at Swiss store checkouts. According to SDA, the media officer of the Steffisburg SVP section wrote that he recommended "giving each and every one of these left-wing scumbags a specially sealed plastic bag and then quickly putting it over their head and tying it up with a long cable tie". The SVP Steffisburg is now examining measures. The slogan is a comment on the Facebook page of Thomas Fuchs, a member of the SVP cantonal council for the city of Berne. He criticizes the ban on plastic bags at checkouts recently passed by the Swiss parliament. The author of the statement is Ueli Tobler. According to SDA, he apologized on his own Facebook page to anyone who felt hurt by the statement. He had made the comments as a private individual and they were "politically incorrect". Tobler has since deleted the post.

Ueli Tobler isn't the only one who has used abusive language, but at the same time doesn't realize that not everything on social media is as private as people sometimes assume. In June, for example, an SVP politician from the city of Zurich resigned from the school board following a comment on Twitter. The president of the SVP's Schwyz section also resigned in September following a comment on Facebook.

Despite all the obvious difficulties with social media, one thing remains the same: the comment went too far. Fuchs thought so too: he distanced himself from it, as he confirmed to SDA on request. Thomas Fuchs believes that Tobler - and other commentators - may not have been aware that his Facebook page was public. People mistakenly believed that their posts could only be seen by Facebook "friends".

You have to understand that too. Then, of course, the comment is okay again. After all, nobody can know that the public is reading along. Or, to put it without irony: every member of the public who is on social networks should perhaps inform themselves briefly about how they work. Or at least remember the following sentence: Internet is generally a way of exchanging thoughts and data, otherwise it would probably be called Solonet. (uma)

SSM: "Staff of World Radio Switzerland disregarded"

About five years ago, SRG integrated the English-language program World Radio Switzerland (WRS) into its lineup. Today, it has confirmed its intention to sell WRS to a private entity.

The SRG is operating with unacceptable negligence, according to a press release from the Swiss Syndicate of Media Professionals (SSM). The SRG guaranteed the broadcaster's objectives and the preservation of some of the jobs. In reality, the SRG has done nothing more than throw sand in the eyes with these guarantees, the press release continues. In fact, neither of the two potential buyers (Werbewoche.ch reported) fulfill the SRG's conditions for a takeover.

This is the reason why the SSM has been demanding negotiations on a social plan for several months. Although all the conditions for this have been met, SRG is stubbornly refusing to discuss the matter with staff and their representatives without any explanation, the press release continues. This refusal to take responsibility on the part of SRG is an affront to the employees of WRS. The SSM therefore reiterates its demand to enter into negotiations without delay.

Google antitrust proceedings go into 2013

The EU competition authorities continue to have Google in their sights. The company is expected to make official concessions in January: And after the tough stance in Brussels, the US antitrust watchdogs are now also taking more time.

The competition proceedings against Google will continue into the coming year in view of the tough position of European antitrust watchdogs. The US trade authority FTC will also not conclude its investigations before January, reported the New York Times. It had previously been said that an agreement with Google could be announced in the USA this week.

EU Competition Commissioner Joaquín Almunia confirmed that his authority is also continuing to investigate the accusation that Google has put competitors at a disadvantage in its leading internet search engine. He expects Google to submit official proposals in January to dispel the Commission's competition concerns. At the same time, Almunia spoke of progress following a meeting with Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Since the talks began in July, the differences had been significantly reduced. Originally, the competition authorities in Europe and the USA wanted to conclude their investigations this year.

Coordinated approach

According to numerous media reports over the weekend, an antitrust lawsuit against Google already appeared to have been averted in the USA. The most serious allegation by competitors that Google had disadvantaged them in search results in favor of its own services was off the table for the antitrust watchdogs, it was said. However, some FTC commissioners now want more time to consider possible penalties in the proceedings, reported the New York Times. Google had always responded to the allegations by saying that it operates a service for users and not for other search engines.

The regulators in the USA and Europe rely on a coordinated approach for globally active companies. Former FTC chief Bill Kovacic also emphasized that any concessions made in Europe would also shape Google's entire business. "The decisions made in Brussels will set a global standard for them," he told the website Politico. Other experts, however, believe that Google could then set up different search systems for Europe and the rest of the world.

Google makes concessions

In the US, one of the concessions to prevent a competition lawsuit is that Google will make less use of restaurant reviews or travel reports from other websites, as reported by the website Politico and the New York Times. In addition, the transfer of advertising campaigns with the entire data packages to other search engines should be made easier. This is also in line with the other points under investigation by EU regulators, which Almunia listed once again on Tuesday. (SDA)

Cellular brings SRF brand world to smartphones and tablets

Cellular has brought SRF's new brand world to mobile devices. The mobile agency realized no less than four apps for Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen SRF.

The applications for iPhone and iPad as well as for Android smartphones and tablets are available immediately. Within the scope of this new order, the agency is responsible for all project steps - from conception to technical implementation as well as project management. According to the agency, the so-called universal approach was chosen. Technically, this involves only one iOS and Android application, which has an optimized user interface and its own navigation according to the respective end device, as well as high-performance content playout.

According to Birger Veit, Managing Director of Cellular, SRF thus "only has to maintain two applications. When updates are made, error corrections and new functions can be made available to users on all devices more quickly and with less effort." Furthermore, in addition to live content from TV and radio, the app also includes navigation based on a color-coded system. It identifies the departments and program offerings in line with SRF's new brand world. In this way, the individual departments are recognizable at first glance by means of colors.

TV and radio streams from Radio SRF 4 News can be accessed live. In addition to current news with audio and video, reports and features from the departments, weather reports and social media functions are also integrated into the apps.
