Call Lanz for VBZ: There are also long electric scooters

Ruf Lanz shows: Most Zurich residents go for electric vehicles that have little in common with the cute little prototypes of the car industry. Namely, the streetcars and trolleybuses of the VBZ.

This is the only way that 80 percent of VBZ passengers are already transported with electric energy - around 720,000 people per day. The new generation of vehicles even uses braking energy and can produce up to 13 percent of its energy needs from it, as Ruf Lanz writes in a statement. The agency has created another pointed motif for the VBZ campaign, which was recently awarded the ADC Evergreen Cube (Werbewoche.ch reported) was created. It is used on advertisements, posters and online.

German magazines too expensive in Switzerland

Magazines such as Focus, Geo, and Kicker still cost significantly more in Switzerland than in Germany and Austria. The prices for French magazines, on the other hand, have fallen slightly.

This is the result of a survey conducted by several consumer protection organizations. The consumer protection organizations carried out the price comparison for the first time six months ago. Their findings at the time: magazines cost around 60 percent more in German-speaking Switzerland than in Germany.

The new price barometer from January 2013 now shows that titles in German-speaking Switzerland have even become a little more expensive. This was announced on Friday by the consumer organizations of German, French and Italian-speaking Switzerland.

Publishers prescribe prices

The 29 magazines surveyed, such as Focus, Geo and Gala, are on average 57% more expensive in German-speaking Switzerland than in Germany - and 41% more expensive than in Austria. This means that the price difference compared to Germany has even increased by one percentage point, while it has remained the same compared to Austria. "The prices are set by the foreign publishers," said André Bähler from the Consumer Protection Foundation when asked by the SDA news agency. "The kiosk operator Valora has been signaling to us for some time that it can't do much about it."

The consumer advocates' calculations are based on the exchange rate at the end of January. The prices from last year's survey were also calculated using the new exchange rate for the current price barometer.

Italian titles twice as expensive

The situation is slightly better in French-speaking Switzerland. French magazines such as Elle and Voici cost 57 percent more there than in France in January. In the first survey, the figure was 64 percent. The people of Ticino have to dig particularly deep into their pockets. Titles such as Gazzetta dello sport or Donna Moderna cost more than twice as much in Ticino as in Italy: the price difference remains unchanged at 105 percent. (SDA)

Walker: When hotel guests become copywriters

The Trevoyan Guesthouse has decided to let its guests write the advertising themselves. The website developed by Walker therefore contains no promotional copy, but rather authentic comments from visitors, all of which are linked to TripAdvisor.

In addition to the overall concept and the webpage, the photos and the new logo design were also implemented by the Walker advertising agency.

Study on the benefits of communication channels

For German consumers, the value of a communication channel depends heavily on which phase of the marketing cycle they are currently in. This is the finding of the “New Realities” study conducted by Weber Shandwick in collaboration with Respondi Online Panels.

While 46% of respondents consider a channel to be important for becoming aware of a brand, the same channel only plays a role in the final purchase decision for 14%. For brand loyalty, the figure is still 9 percent.

The New Realities study was conducted for the first time in 2010. Now over 3,000 consumers in Brazil, China, Germany, India and the USA have been surveyed on their information and purchasing behavior. The focus of the online surveys was on the value and use of information sources as well as attitudes towards various information offerings, as Weber Shandwick writes in a press release on the study on Presseportal.ch.

According to the study, the majority of Germans surveyed believe that there is more information available today than there was a few years ago. On a scale of 1 (strongly disagree) to 10 (strongly agree), the statement "If a brand really wants my attention, it has to do something special" is rated at an average of 7.3. "I only become an advocate if I have had a great experience with the brand myself" receives an average score of 7.

The marketing funnel as a linear model has had its day, says Astrid von Rudloff, Chief Executive Officer of Weber Shandwick Germany, describing current developments. "Product information doesn't hit the consumer like an arrow fired at an object. Brand communication is more like a pinball machine: the ball has to be kept moving. Ideally 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, wherever the customer happens to be. This also applies after the actual purchase decision has been made." So it's no longer just about being informed about a product, but experiencing the brand itself, the press release continues. Consumers decide how and when. For marketing managers, this means creating points of contact for brands where consumers want to see and experience them.

New York Times: Paid model pays off

For the first time, The New York Times is earning more from readers than from advertising. This is due to the subscription model adopted by the publication, which relies heavily on online readers.

For the first time in its history, revenues from newspaper sales and online subscriptions were higher than those from the advertising business last year, the New York Times Company media group announced on Thursday, according to SDA. The group earned 954 million dollars from print and online readers and 898 million dollars from advertising sales. According to SDA, the group posted a profit of 133 million dollars last year. This contrasts with a loss of 39.7 million dollars in 2011.

"The numbers show the willingness of our users here and around the world to pay for the highest quality journalism that The New York Times and other company titles represent," said CEO Mark Thompson, according to SDA. In the fourth quarter, the number of online subscribers to The Times and International Herald Tribune rose by 13 percent to 640,000, while the Boston Globe increased by eight percent to 28,000.

For unrestricted use of the portal Nytimes.com online readers have had to pay since March 2011 (Werbewoche.ch reported).
