With an increase of 2.0 percent (+8.3 million Swiss francs) compared to the same month of the previous year, a positive signal was set in May 2013. By contrast, the cumulative increase from January to May 2013 was weaker at 0.3 percent (+5.9 million Swiss francs).
Thirst for more advertising
Measured in terms of gross value print, advertisers in the beverage industry placed over 20 percent more advertising (+12.3 million Swiss francs) from January to May 2013 than in the previous year. In a cross-industry comparison, this is the biggest percentage increase.
The submarkets "Non-alcoholic Beverages" (excluding coffee, tea, cocoa) and "Wine" contributed significantly to this development. With growth of more than nine million Swiss francs, the "Non-alcoholic Beverages" submarket strengthened its position and continues to dominate the beverage sector with an industry-specific advertising share of 46.1 percent (YTD 2012: 40.2 percent). "Wine" and "Coffee, Tea, Cocoa" follow with shares of 17.2 percent and 15.0 percent, respectively. Within the "Non-alcoholic Beverages" segment, "Orange Beverages" were pushed most intensively in percentage terms (+2285.0 percent).
In recent years, Sinalco's product advertising was barely visible in the traditional media, but from January to May 2013, the company went all out. With TV commercials, advertisements, and display ads, more than one million Swiss francs have already flowed into the classic media this year. Advertising activities for Fanta also began to ramp up again this year. With the same media strategy as Sinalco, they are communicating a more colorful life: "Drink Fanta. Live more colorful." Only Orangina has seen little in the way of advertising so far this year. Orangina's last major advertising campaign was in 2011, when it invested around CHF 1.4 million.
Orange leader
The second-largest percentage increase in advertising print from January to May 2013 was measured in the telecommunications industry. The increase in advertising print by around CHF 11.8 million to a total of CHF 102.6 million, was reflected in a plus of 13.0 percent.
The mobile product group, which at 55.5 million Swiss francs is the most important submarket in this sector, grew by 36.2 percent or 14.8 million Swiss francs compared with the same period last year. Orange is also the trump card in this submarket. Orange Communications generated around a quarter (26.2 percent) of the mobile advertising volume from January to May 2013, with Swisscom following closely behind with 23.5 percent. Sunrise has communicated significantly less so far and has an advertising print share of 10.4 percent.
