Telephone use is changing rapidly

A semester comparison of the Wemf Mach Consumer 2013 study commissioned by IGEM shows: The biggest changes took place in phone use.

Developments in entertainment and communications technology are moving at a rapid pace. For this reason, the electronic media interest group IGEM commissioned an exclusive evaluation from the Mach Consumer 2013 study from the AG für Werbemedienforschung WEMF, which shows the changes between the first and second survey semesters.

A comparison of the results for the two semesters (see box) on the basis of the population aged 14 and over throughout Switzerland reveals a whole series of significant changes, especially in the area of telephone use.

For example, the proportion of those who have a normal fixed-network line has fallen significantly from 78.1 to 74.2 percent. By contrast, the proportion of those who mainly make calls via the Internet (e.g., Skype) has increased from 16.6 to 18.8 percent, and the proportion of those who mainly use cell phones has risen from 62.9 to 65.3 percent. As expected, there has been a massive increase in smartphone ownership, from 45.8 to 52.5 percent. Among 14- to 29-year-olds, the figure of just under 80 percent in the second half of the year is significantly higher than in the first half (72.5 percent). In line with the greater prevalence of smartphones, the use of the corresponding functions has also increased significantly (see graphic).

In terms of cell phone ownership, Nokia leads with 33.2%, just ahead of Apple with the iPhone (31.3%). However, this figure is significantly 4.8 points lower for Nokia in the second half of the year than in the first half, while it is 4.8 points higher for the iPhone. Samsung continues to rank third with a value that has risen from 18.1 to 22.1 percent.

As a result of the greater penetration of smartphones, daily or almost daily Internet use via a mobile device has also increased significantly from 33.6 to 38.2 percent. Meanwhile, 25.8 percent of people aged 14 and over also live in households with a tablet PC. That is a good third more than in the first semester. And the proportion of those who regularly used a tablet PC in the second semester rose by around 40 percent to 19.9 percent.

Box

The exclusive evaluation from Wemf's Mach Consumer study includes all questions from the consumer electronics / telecommunications / computer sector. These can be evaluated after the two semesters of the survey year:

- Semester 1: Mid-April 2012 to mid-October 2012
- Semester 2: Mid-October 2012 until beginning of May 2012

The survey also includes people in households without a registered fixed network connection. The results correspond to the average value for the semester in question and are based in each case on around 4700 interviews throughout Switzerland, of which 3400 are in German-speaking Switzerland, 1100 in French-speaking Switzerland and 200 in Italian-speaking Switzerland. The results can be analyzed by all IGEM members at no additional cost via Next > Level.

Ringier sells AIO shares

Ringier is selling its shares in the AIO Group to the majority shareholder, DEAG. As a result, Ringier no longer holds a stake in Good News Productions, but will retain the Moon & Stars Festival in Locarno and focus on the Energy Group’s events going forward.

Ringier sold its 48 percent stake in AIO to DEAG (Deutsche Entertainment AG, previously 52 percent) on December 18, 2013. This does not affect the Moon & Stars Festival in Locarno in Ticino, which will now be managed directly by Ringier Entertainment in Zurich. The clear strategic orientation of the AIO Group will be additionally supported by the new shareholder structure and fast decision-making channels, according to a statement. DEAG will continue to manage AIO's activities in Switzerland as sole shareholder. Gérard Jenni will continue to manage the business as CEO of the AIO Group.

In addition to Good News Productions, AIO will then also include the concert promoter Starclick Entertainment, EM Event Marketing, the production planning company Fortissimo and Venue Consulting. A total of 25 people are employed. 15 of them work at Good News Productions, which was founded in 1970 and organizes around 100 events a year with a total of 800'000 visitors. In the entertainment sector, Ringier will focus on the events of the Energy Group from 2014. On the one hand, on the previous events such as Energy Stars For Free, Energy Movie Night, the Energy Live Sessions and the Energy Fashion Night. New plans for 2014 include a major summer open air and an indoor music event in the style of Energy Stars For Free in western Switzerland. Also planned for 2014 is an expansion of the Energy Live Sessions. From 2015, another event highlight with a charity character will be added.

Michael Voss, COO Ringier and Managing Director of the Ringier Entertainment division: "I am pleased that Ringier and DEAG will each have an even more focused presence in the Swiss market in the future. Ringier can concentrate on the successful Moon & Stars festival and the expansion of Energy events in the area of live events. Znip Znap: Speed dating on the ski lift

Znip Znap develops a marketing concept for the Neusell ski lift in Rothenthurm SZ, which, in addition to a new claim, includes the first speed dating at a ski lift.

The ski lift opened in 1964 Neusell is one of the shortest routes to the slopes for residents of the cities and regions of Zurich, Zug and Lucerne. The Neusell ski area - with one of the longest T-bar lifts in Switzerland - offers 10 km of varied pistes and the Neusell team attaches great importance to personal contact with visitors. With a new focus target group - experienced connoisseurs and sporty families from Zurich, Zug and Lucerne - a new claim was developed in collaboration with the advertising agency Kreienbühl und Vogler to express precisely this positioning: "Neusell ski lift - very close."

First speed dating on a ski lift

"The lift ride in the Neusell ski area takes seven minutes. Enough time to find the woman or man for life." In keeping with the new claim, Neusell will be the first ski resort to introduce speed dating on the ski lift in the 2013/2014 season. The lift ride on the Neusell's two-seater gondola lift takes seven minutes, exactly the same time as a conventional speed dating session. The winter landscape in the high valley of Rothenthurm is therefore not only very close for all those from Schwyz, Zug, Zurich and Lucerne, but also attractive for singles from all over German-speaking Switzerland.

According to the press release, the first participants from December 14, 2013 confirm that speed dating on the ski lift is more relaxed and pleasant than conventional speed dating. After all, you never get that close in a wicked bar or on the dance floor of a booming club without seeming intrusive. On a two-person ski lift, on the other hand, not only is the necessary intimacy guaranteed, but the ambience in the snowy winter landscape is also perfect and with skiing, you're sure to have something in common.

The participants meet for the first time over coffee and croissants in the morning and, in addition to the seven minutes on the lift, can also get to know each other on the varied descent with short stops. Each woman skis up and down once with each man. On arrival, each participant independently and discreetly indicates whether they would like to find out more about the person they have just met. If both participants agree, they will receive each other's e-mail addresses the next day. The organization and moderation on site is carried out by an event agency experienced in speed dating Ppech sulfur.

The great media response with half-page and multi-minute clippings in 20 Minuten, Blick am Abend, Luzerner Zeitung, Radio 24, Radio Sunshine, Radio Central, among others, as well as the high number of participants prove that speed dating on the ski lift offers an attractive alternative to conventional speed dating in bars/restaurants and online dating platforms.
Speed dating takes place every second Saturday of the month.

Users can view the kaleidoscope on the computer and change the pattern with the mouse as well as on touch devices with a swipe of the finger. The result: colors, shapes and spaces without end. Zurich Airport is unveiling a completely revamped website. The agency Eyekon is responsible for the project.

The completely renovated Website is aimed at a broad, international audience and receives almost 400,000 visitors per month. For the new website, the airport and corporate divisions have been brought together in a uniform and modern design. Eyekon won a pitch against the competition and is responsible for the structure, design and client-side programming. In addition to a comprehensible structure and usability, the focus is also on clearly addressing the various target groups: Zurich Airport's high operational quality standards should also be tangible in all facets on the website. Jim & Jim: cinema spot for TCS

The Cooldown Club, TCS’s roadside assistance service for young people, offers its members discounts on two-phase driver training. To promote this offer to the relevant target groups, Jim & Jim created a TV commercial.

The agency, which specializes in youth and student marketing, staged the advantages of the TCS Cooldown Club on the basis of the notorious monetary bottlenecks of young drivers: The spot shows a young man doing unconventional jobs and thus illustrates that it is also possible to afford the two-phase training without doing boring and "stupid" jobs. The cinema spot can currently be seen in cinemas in various major Swiss cities.

Goldbach Media: Partnership with Melectronics

Mel TV, Melectronics‘ in-store TV concept, will now be marketed by Goldbach Media. Mel TV allows for the display of both in-house and third-party advertisements on approximately 4,500 HD screens in over 111 stores.

Mel TV can be booked individually or together with the screens from Media-Saturn Instore TV and CanalPoste in the "Goldbach Media Elektronik Pool". The three networks comprise a total of 10,032 screens, are represented at over 375 locations, and thus currently achieve a frequency of 2'074'819 gross contacts per week.

In Melectronics stores, the TV sets on display take up a large part of the sales area. Melectronics uses these screens for its own TV program, Mel TV. On Mel TV, both the company's own and third-party products and services are advertised in a creative way, directly at the POS (point of sale), where the customer is about to make a purchase decision and his attention is correspondingly high. The intelligent solution automatically filters out those offers that are actually available in the respective store. The advertisers thus reach their target group in an emotionally positively charged environment and in situations where no other media have access to the customer.

By modernizing the screens, Tamoil is optimally strengthening the "Goldbach Media Service Station Pool," according to the announcement. In addition to Tamoil, the pool also includes Migrolino, Migrol/Shell gas pumps and the Amscreen BP gas station stores. The four networks together currently consist of 987 screens at 241 locations and achieve a frequency of 1'046'264 gross contacts per week.

The largest print job is redistributed

Every three years, Coop puts the printing contract for Coop-Presse out to bid. This time, NZZ and Ringier are the winners, while Tamedia’s printing facility in Lausanne is the big loser.

This year, Coop has redistributed the largest printing contract in Switzerland - the printing of the Coop Press (a total of 2.6 million copies): Instead of seven printing plants as before, the three regional language editions Coopzeitung, Coopération and Cooperazione are to be produced at six printing sites from 2014 and also distributed from there. Of course, the Basler Zeitung Medien printing plant has been eliminated. However, it had already closed last spring and therefore ceded its share - just under half a million copies - to Tamedia's printing center in Bern. For around nine months, Tamedia printed exactly half of the total circulation of Coop-Presse at two locations (Berne, Lausanne). But this has now come to an end: the retailer, which puts the largest weekly print job out to tender every three years, has redistributed not only the BZM share, but the entire print run. This is revealed in the 2014 tariff documentation of Coop-Presse.

Less volume for Tamedia's Lausanne site

Ringier benefits most from the redistribution: Ringier Print Adligenswil now prints around one million copies, 150 percent more than before! Although the NZZ media group will print 44'000 fewer copies at its printing site in Zurich Schlieren in the future, it will print just under 100'000 more copies in St. Gallen, which is why there is now an increase of 7.5 percent to a total of 780'000 copies. Centro Stampa Ticino, the printing plant of Corriere del Ticino, retains the order for Cooperazione (126'000 copies) and benefits from a 3.4 percent increase in circulation. The Tamedia Group, on the other hand, was the only one to lose ground, although only by 3.4 percent to 714'000 copies.

What looks like little is a significant downgrade, at least for Tamedia's Centre d'Impression in Lausanne (CIL). Previously responsible for 71 percent of Coopération's circulation, it now prints 120'000 fewer copies, leaving it with a share of just under 48 percent. This is a bitter loss, all the more so as Coop had already reduced CIL's print order by 30 percent three years ago. The remaining 52 percent of Coopération's circulation will be printed by Ringier Print Adligensweil, which has almost doubled its share in Western Switzerland. Coop's goal is clear: they wanted to distribute the western Swiss print job more evenly. In return, Tamedia's printing center in Bern will be allowed to print a good 100'000 more copies of the Coopzeitung in the future, which corresponds to an increase of 34 percent there.

Coop wants to avoid cluster risks

Total circulation is now also somewhat more evenly distributed than before: Ringier has 38 percent (previously 16 percent), the NZZ Group has 30 percent (previously 29 percent), Tamedia prints 27.5 percent (previously 29.5 percent), and Corriere retains the Italian-language portion (5 percent). Roughly speaking, therefore, Ringier, NZZ and Tamedia now each have about one-third of the circulation; previously, Tamedia and NZZ had about twice as much as Ringier.

The fact that Coop distributes its print job more or less evenly across several sites has to do with transport and environmental protection considerations. But strategic aspects also play a role: at a time when printing plants are being closed (BZM, Schaffhausen), it is advisable to distribute Switzerland's largest print job in such a way that cluster risks can be avoided.

Last but not least: Jaguar shows its claws

Do you remember Mercedes' dancing chickens? Jaguar shot its own version and shows what it thinks of its German competitors.

To explain the Magic Body Control stability program, Mercedes-Benz had the chickens dance to "Upside Down" in September ("Last but not least", 25.09.2013). The Jung von Matt spot caused a worldwide sensation, amusement and amazement at the animal perfection that can only serve as a model for humans - in addition to an accusation of plagiarism by Ogilvy & Mather Frankfurt.

On Tuesday, Jaguar USA published a parody of the celebrated suspension system. And makes it clear that it is not one of the goals of the traditionally sporty car dealership to let customers glide along the road like on a sedan chair. Disco off! (hae)
