Press Council approves complaint of unfair research

The Press Council has upheld a complaint against the newspaper Sonntagsblick for unethical reporting. In the case of the article «Social Madness! Family Costs 60,000 Francs a Month,' the journalist misled the family in question about the purpose of the investigation.

With the Article Sonntagsblick violated paragraph 4 of the "Declaration of the Duties and Rights of Journalists," the Swiss Press Council wrote in a statement Wednesday. The paragraph requires journalists not to use unfair methods when obtaining information, sounds, images and documents. In the article, published on Sept. 14, 2014, Sonntagsblick reported on an Eritrean family whose care costs their municipality of residence in the canton of Zurich 60,000 francs a month. The social work company SolidHelp filed a complaint against the article with the Press Council.

Used" as an informant

SolidHelp based the complaint on the fact that the journalist had "used" the mother of the Eritrean family mentioned in the article as an informant. Four of the seven children have been placed in a home. The journalist had pretended to help the mother get the children back. However, the article itself did not in any way address the issue of the possibly unjustified out-of-home placement of the children. As evidence, the complainant cited three text messages sent by the journalist to the mother. In them, the author of the article identifies herself as a journalist and tells the woman that she can help her get the children back.

Name the goal of the search

The Press Council derives from the fairness requirement of the "Declaration of the Duties and Rights of Journalists" and the associated Guideline 4.1 that the journalist should clearly state the goal of the research - even if not its details. In particular, "fishing expeditions" are frowned upon, by means of which attempts are made to obtain explosive information under the pretext of a different research purpose. In a statement, Sonntagsblick wrote that SolidHelp was the company that looked after the family, but did not mention this in the complaint. The Press Council states that the newspaper does not refer to the SMS communication in the statement and does not claim that there are other SMS by means of which the mother would have been informed about the purpose of the research. For the press council it is obvious that the author wanted to get information about the care services for the family via the question of the external placement of four children. This blatantly contradicts the professional ethics of fairness and violates the principle of fairness, the statement said. (SDA)

Last but not least: toilet

A Brazilian TV commercial very precisely illustrates the difference between toilet paper and wet wipes—without actually showing anything.

toilette

You can depict something very explicit in a very unexplicit way. The stylistic device is not new - we know it at the latest from the film "The Naked Gun", in which a sexual act is depicted with trains, factories and fireworks. After 30 years it can be used again. Accompanied by the tango classic "Por una Cabeza" by Carlos Gardel - known to many from the flim "True Lies". "Something that is difficult to explain - but if you understand it, it is obvious," it says. We understand. The spot was created by Iris Worldwide from São Paulo. The public likes it: After two days, it already has over 630'000 views and many positive comments. We wish you a good visit to the toilet. (hae)

Up to three hours of TV use daily

TV viewership in Switzerland remains high. This is confirmed by the latest half-year figures from the independent research institute Mediapulse.

German-speaking Swiss spend an average of 131 minutes a day watching TV. In the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, the figure is as high as 3 hours. The proportion of time-shifted TV use continues to rise steadily.

In the first half of 2016, the usual amount of television was watched in Switzerland. Up to three hours (182 minutes) of TV were watched daily in Italian-speaking Switzerland. The German-speaking part of Switzerland watched 131 minutes and the French-speaking part 153 minutes. Compared to the previous semesters, reach increased slightly. In German-speaking Switzerland, for example, TV achieved a daily reach of 66.9 percent, in French-speaking Switzerland 68.3 percent and in Italian-speaking Switzerland 77.8 percent.

The proportion of time-shifted TV use continues to rise steadily. In particular, among younger viewers aged 15-29 in German-speaking Switzerland, around one-fifth of usage is already in time-shifted form (20.1% of total usage). The same is true in Suisse romande, where the proportion of time-shifted use in the young target group of 15-29 year-olds has already reached 21.9 percent. In an overall analysis of time-shifted use by all persons aged 3 and over, there is hardly any difference between the language regions. **

Exxtra: The Audi photo book on the Grand Tour of Switzerland

To coincide with the Grand Tour of Switzerland, Exxtra has created a photo book for Audi that now gives all dealers the opportunity to present it as a gift to their new-car buyers. The book is not available for purchase and is therefore exclusively given to valued Audi customers.

The over 1600-kilometer route of the Grand Tour of Switzerland was launched by Switzerland Tourism, the Grand Tour of Switzerland association and Audi as Official Partner in April last year. Audi is involved as a partner because the tour leads over five Alpine passes and is thus a perfect fit for the Quattro all-wheel drive.

Court reduces compensation for Kachelmann

Bild-Zeitung must pay weather presenter Jörg Kachelmann less than stipulated in the first instance for reporting on the trial against him. This was decided by the Cologne Higher Regional Court on Tuesday.

Zattoo-PR-CH-160712-EM_2016_Infografik_Spiel-meisten-Zuschauer_Zattoo_CH_0

In the first instance, the Cologne Regional Court had awarded him 635,000 euros. The new amount is 513,000 euros including interest. The Swiss weather presenter Kachelmann was acquitted of rape charges in 2011. In its coverage of his trial, Bild-Zeitung had, in the judges' view, repeatedly overstepped the bounds of what was permissible in its print edition and online and seriously violated Kachelmann's right of personality. However, neither the Regional Court nor the Higher Regional Court could recognize a targeted campaign by Springer together with other media. The highest compensation to date in a similar case was 400'000 euros for the Swedish Princess Madeleine, a ruling by the Hamburg Higher Regional Court in 2009. (hae/SDA)
