This was revealed by Marcel Kohler, member of the Tamedia Management Board, on Monday at the European Newspaper Congress in Vienna City Hall. Kohler's company credo: "The production of print and online must converge. If investments are made in both editorial offices, print losers will become digital winners." Germany will be 20 Minuten's third foreign market after Luxembourg and Denmark. The test phase in Germany was announced back in March (Werbewoche.ch reported).
The joint success of print and online was worth a comprehensive study for the New York Times. Andrew Phelps and Adam Ellick presented the results to the 500 media people who had come to the Newspaper Congress from many European countries: "More than half of our audience is already mobile, and it is moving even faster than our business environment." The NYT has a payment model, and that requires quality: "There are many products on the lowest rung, but few high quality products. That's why the NYT pushes good journalism."
With teams in which all areas of the media company are represented, especially analysts, the NYT is working "to ensure that the stories find readers. It used to be all about the front page. Now it's about how to optimize the data." Since the NYT appeared on the four-square-centimeter screen of the Apple Watch, the stories have had to be focused on one sentence: "Short and crisp," says Phelps. The fact that people only like simple and short stories is nevertheless a myth: "They have to be good and then resonate with the reader if they want to read a long story". Most of the NYT's revenue comes from advertising and subscriptions; this year the NYT wants to reach one million subscriptions for mobile applications. Andrè Hellmann showed that the previous focus on the usual key figures was of little use. "Key figures are only useful if the targets are precisely defined: Traffic or entrances, for example." He is convinced that the market is capped and that only those who "invest people's time best" will win. Mobile traffic in Germany is around 40 percent, and it is occupied by a few large media. As in the USA, the decline in website traffic is enormous.
Constantly and repeatedly improving: Heiko Scherer from the Berlin digital agency Clapp found the word for this: "constant beta". "The importance of mobile devices is still underestimated - the end user is gaining power," says Scherer. The challenge lies in constantly developing new products for different devices. In the past, technology defined the medium, today we are living with the cross-media trend. The development is leading to the emergence of separate companies that can handle the new problems in the media companies.
Congress co-organizer Nobert Küpper continues the congress with an overview of newspaper trends. The European Newspaper Congress is organized by the media publishing house Johann Oberauer together with Norbert Küpper, newspaper designer in Germany. Cooperation partners such as the City of Vienna, Austria Tabak/JTI and OMV provide significant support for the event.
