NZZ Regional Media: New Head of Digital Media

The NZZ Media Group’s regional media outlets in Central and Eastern Switzerland are stepping up their digital development efforts and expanding this area. Manuel Küffer will assume the newly created position of Head of Digital Media effective September 1, 2015.

In his role as Head of Digital Media, Manuel Küffer will join the Executive Board of Regional Media and report directly to Jürg Weber, Head of Regional Media. He is currently Head of Commercial Business at ImmoScout24 and previously worked in the digital division of the NZZ Media Group from 2008 to 2013. In order to accelerate growth in the user and advertising market, the two news portals Luzernerzeitung.ch and Tagblatt.ch will be repositioned, standardized and expanded as a matter of priority, according to a press release issued by the NZZ media group on Friday. In future, the two online editorial teams in Lucerne and St. Gallen will cooperate more closely in the news area. Product development and online marketing for the regional media will now be coordinated centrally by the Head of Digital Media and synergies with the NZZ Media Group will be strengthened in the technical area.

SRG "GAU": Threatening No to the Billag bill

A formal discussion about the levying of fees has now turned into a fundamental debate about SRG and the public service. Internally at SRG, there is talk of an "impending voting disaster", as Schweiz am Sonntag writes.

On June 14, voters will decide on the revision of the Radio and Television Act. There is a threat of a "no" vote on the Billag bill. According to Schweiz am Sonntag, a weighted online poll surprisingly showed a No majority. The FEP and GLP also decided to vote against the bill. The fear internally is that a rejection of the bill would be instrumentalized by politicians as a signal to dismantle the SRG.

The SP and CVP are probably the strongest supporters of the SRG, although they are not without their critics. The SP member of the Council of States told Schweiz am Sonntag that the SRG's public service mandate is "right and important for multilingual Switzerland", but she doubts that the SRG is still fulfilling this mandate. Neither information nor cultural programs have enough importance, instead there is too much entertainment and tabloid content. "The SRG needs a shot across the bow," she says according to Schweiz am Sonntag with regard to the referendum vote on June 14.

FDP Vice President Christian Wasserfallen already has a downsizing plan ready, regardless of the outcome of the referendum. This has been submitted to Schweiz am Sonntag and includes the abolition of the TV station SRF Info. Radio Virus should also be abolished, he says. Radio SRF 3 is also being called into question, and individual programs such as "Voice of Switzerland" or "Supertalente" could be shown on private TV stations, as Wasserfallen says according to Schweiz am Sonntag.

Last but not least: How Beachbody advertising triggered a shitstorm

A controversial advertising campaign for weight-loss protein powder must be removed from the London Underground because the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) takes issue with an image of a scantily clad, slender woman in a bikini. And so the story unfolds...

The ASA has launched an investigation into the campaign, which features posters showing a scantily clad, slim woman in a bikini. The model on the posters asks the question: "Are you beach body ready?" ("Do you already have your beach body?"). The posters will come down in the next three days, the ASA announced, citing concerns about weight loss promises in the advertising. The campaign "cannot appear again in its current form". The bone of contention is the "social irresponsibility" of the campaign. Among other things, the investigation that has been launched is intended to clarify whether the campaign is socially irresponsible. According to the authority, it is in contact with the provider Protein World and has also discussed the campaign with the company.

Previously, numerous posters were displayed in subway stations and trains in the British capital. They had annoyed many passers-by. According to the ASA, it received 360 complaints. Critics said that the advertising was sexist and degraded women to the status of objects. According to Charlotte Baring, who started an online petition for the removal of the posters, many people felt physically inferior in the face of the posters. Next Saturday, all opponents of the advertising wanted to show off their beach bodies in London's Hyde Park - in clothes they feel comfortable in.
Protein World's head of marketing, Richard Staveley, told ITV that the campaign simply asked women if they had achieved their goals. He said the company had even received a bomb threat because of the campaign.

However, there is now good news for Staveley: the matter has already been reported on numerous platforms - in addition to the Guardian was also a contentious issue in the Mirror to find. Countless other platforms reported on the posters and a demo taking place in Hyde Park. But what really caught the eye was how the manufacturer reacted to an impending shitstorm (uma/SDA):

Wolfgang Büchner has been given the task of further developing the Blick, Sonntags-Blick, Blick am Abend and Blick.ch publications. He concentrated the newsroom in Berlin, which had previously been scattered throughout the country. Both Blick and Sonntags-Blick are struggling with significantly declining circulations.

Press Freedom Day

51 media workers have been killed in the first four months of this year. That is 24 percent more than in the same period last year, according to a statement released Thursday by the Press Emblem Campaign (PEC) in Geneva.

On the occasion of Press Freedom Day next Sunday, the organization expressed concern about "new very worrying threats faced by media professionals, such as targeted killings by terrorist groups and hacking attacks against media". PEC is also alarmed by the large number of media workers who have been killed by jihadist groups. Of the 51 journalists killed, 21 were shot dead, including eight in the terrorist attack against the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris on January 7. Terrorist groups have also succeeded in paralyzing media with hacker attacks, such as the French channel TV5Monde.

With 17 victims, most media professionals lost their lives in the war zones in the Middle East and North Africa. In Libya alone, where several armed groups are fighting for power, eight journalists were killed. In Yemen, four media professionals have been killed since the increase in fighting in March.

PEC is also concerned about the situation in Ukraine. Of the four journalists who have died there since January, three were deliberately killed. In Central America (Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras), the situation has not improved. Six media professionals have been killed there since January. (SDA)

Déformation professionelle - Professional diseases in advertising and marketing

Axel Eckstein, Executive Creative Director at Leo Burnett Switzerland, writes in Werbewoche about pathology in advertising and marketing. In the seventh episode: decubitus idea.

Description

Idea soreness refers to ulcers that form when ideas sit around for a long time. Then, when you still have a lot of time before implementation or when implementation is not planned at all. Particularly at risk are mature campaign architectures that have been presented several times in different committees.

Symptoms

Concepts that have been thought through to the end, but have not yet been made, get pressure marks on exposed parts such as the headline or the key visual. If the pressure lasts too long, irreversible damage is done to the basic conceptual framework.

Origin

The damaging pressure is created simply by people involved (client, creative, consultant) or uninvolved (friends, relatives, house staff) repeatedly looking at the design. After some time, sore points become visible, e.g. a word that is ambiguous, a story that not everyone understands, or an ad that shows different people than the TV spot.

Treatment

Pressure relief is the top priority when it comes to idea bedsores. This is done by rearranging the layout elements and rebuilding the presentation slides at regular intervals. If the sore spots are small and dry (punchlines), it may be sufficient to cover them with a voice over. Larger areas are treated with a sterile solution. In the case of professional therapy, it must be remembered to make cutbacks from the idea.

Music to the ears

On behalf of the Hear the World Foundation, the Zurich-based advertising agency Serranetga has created a prevention campaign that calls on music enthusiasts to appreciate and protect their own hearing more.

Since April 25, song quotes from well-known musicians have adorned the posters, displays and free earplug distribution boxes of the Hear the World Foundation at concerts throughout Switzerland. In the name of the Sonova Holding Foundation, they put the word "hearing" into a new context and thus call on music lovers at concerts, where high dB levels are common, to protect their hearing.

The launch of the new hearing protection campaign was prompted by the German band Unheilig's concert in Zurich's Hallenstadion. The song quote "Sometimes I want to hear everything" by frontman Der Graf adorns the poster. The Count of Unheilig is an ambassador for Hear the World and, as a trained hearing aid acoustician, has been supporting the foundation since 2012. As a prevention partner, Good News, Switzerland's largest concert promoter, enables an efficient approach to the target group on site.

The Zurich-based advertising agency Serranetga is responsible for implementing the prevention campaign. "It has managed to address a widespread and at the same time very sensitive topic without coming across as patronizing," says Elena Torresani, Head of the Hear the World Initiative. "With the song text excerpts from their stars, fans feel directly addressed. This increases credibility and at the same time the motivation to follow the advice."

Typical Bern" label on product packaging

«Typical Bern»: That’s the name of a label that has recently begun appearing on several products from the city of Bern and the Oberaargau region. Bern Tourism and several partner organizations aim to further strengthen the “Bern” brand, which was introduced in 2011.

Initially two producers from the city of Bern, five others from Oberaargau and the Huttwil theme markets will now use the label on packaging and in advertising messages. The producers include the Bernese bakery Reinhard with its gingerbread and the care product manufacturer Suissessences in Wangen an der Aare. The idea behind the new label is that the manufacturers of the products benefit from the Bern brand, but also that the tourist destination of Bern benefits from the quality and good reputation of the products. This is what representatives of Bern Tourism and partner organizations told the media in Bern on Thursday. Accordingly, the label will only be awarded to producers who have a direct link to the Bern region, produce high-quality products and implement sustainability measures.

The new label will not only be displayed on products. It will also be awarded to services, events and institutions that stand for Bern and "where Bern is in it", as Markus Lergier, Director of Bern Tourism, says.

The fact that only seven producers and the Huttwil theme markets are using the label in the first phase is due to the circumstances: the introduction of such a label requires a certain amount of time. Packaging, for example, cannot be changed from one day to the next. Lergier predicted that ten companies from the city of Bern would be using the label within a year. Sven Gubler, director of the city centre organization BERNcity, said that his organization was very interested in the label. (SDA)
