Geo magazine, published by Gruner + Jahr, is 30 years old. It is celebrating its birthday with a series of activities: a new magazine structure, a golden anniversary edition, the launch of a 20-volume Geo-Lexikon edition in cooperation with Brockhaus-Verlag and the reportage book "Die Fotografen". The new entry to the magazine is called "GeoKosmos". Double-page photographs, shorter texts and columns are intended to make it easier for readers to get started. "This is something for those who also want to be a bit on the boulevard," explained Editor-in-Chief Peter-Matthias Gaede, according to Werben & Verkaufen. The anniversary issue has the motto "The power of confidence" and comprises 245 pages.
Christoph Blocher demanded changes to TV program
Justice Minister Christoph Blocher unsuccessfully demanded that a recording of the «Infrarouge» program on Western Swiss television featuring him be edited after the fact.
Justice Minister Christoph Blocher has demanded in vain that a recording of the "Infrarouge" program on French-speaking Swiss television with him be changed retrospectively. The magistrate had taken offense at drawings by the cartoonists Mix & Remix, some of which made an undesirable commentary on Blocher's statements, Livio Zanolari, spokesman for the Minister of Justice, told the Radio Suisse Romande (RSR) about his superior's intervention. Blocher had agreed to take part in the "Infrarouge" program if he could provide objective information on the votes on the asylum and immigration laws on September 24.
Gilles Marchand, director of French-speaking Swiss television, told RSR that Blocher knew exactly how the program worked. He had already been a guest there in the past and was also a fan of the Mix & Remix cartoons. It was therefore decided not to make any changes.
Swiss print media with stable reach
The latest reach survey data for print and cinema from Wemf AG for Advertising Media Research show that the Swiss remain a nation of newspaper readers. Nine out of ten people read a daily newspaper, and 93.1 percent read at least one magazine.
The latest data from the press and cinema reach research conducted by Wemf AG für Werbemedienforschung shows that the Swiss continue to be newspaper readers. The readership figures from MACH Basic 2006-2, published twice a year, have remained stable since 2000. Nine out of ten people read a newspaper more or less regularly. Even more, namely 93.1 percent, read at least one magazine.
The daily press now reaches 77.5 percent of the population (2000: 75.1 percent). The Sunday press increased from 40.3 to 43.5 percent, the regional weekly press from 42.1 to 49.2 percent. There was no change in program guides, which reach 50 percent of the population. News and themed magazines did not increase either: they reach 37% of the population. Only the financial and business press saw a decline in reach, reaching 14.1% of the population.
For most newspapers and magazines, the changes compared to the previous year are not particularly large, with slightly declining figures overall. Only 20 Minuten recorded a significant increase. The free newspaper grew by 18 percent to 1,116,000 copies, not least thanks to its expansion into eastern Switzerland. Thanks to the Basellandschaftliche Zeitung, the Mittelland Zeitung was able to increase its circulation by 15 percent to 449,000 copies and is now in fourth place in the circulation charts behind 20 Minuten, Blick and Tages-Anzeiger.
You can read detailed analyses of MACH Basic 2006-2 readership figures for newspapers and magazines in the current issue of Werbewoche No. 32.
News Corp. makes it ring with Jamba
Rupert Murdoch's media conglomerate, News Corp., acquired 51 percent of the shares in the German ringtone provider Jamba on Tuesday. According to media reports, a partnership with Mobizzo and MySpace is planned.
Rupert Murdoch's media group News Corp. acquired 51 percent of the shares in German ringtone provider Jamba on Tuesday. News Corp. received the shares from the previous sole shareholder VeriSign. The IT service provider VeriSign had bought Jamba in May 2004 for 273 million US dollars. Based in Berlin, Jamba claims to sell digital entertainment services in more than 28 countries and employs around 550 people.
A purchase price of 187.5 million dollars was agreed, as a Jamba spokesperson confirmed to SDA in a Wall Street Journal report. According to the Wall Street Journal, a merger of Jamba with the News Corp. unit Mobizzo is planned. Mobizzo is responsible for the production and distribution of Mobisodes, episodes of TV series for mobile consumption. However, the unit is making losses, the Wall Street Journal reports. These losses are now to be offset with the profitable company Jamba.
The takeover is intended to create a leading provider of music, videos and other entertainment services for cell phones. Among other things, video clips for cell phones featuring the characters from the animated series "The Simpsons", which is broadcast in the USA by Murdoch's Fox television station, are planned. Jamba is also to sell ringtones via the community portal Myspace, which is also owned by News Corp.

Net-Audit: Media websites on the rise
Most online editions of Swiss media outlets recorded an increase in visits last month. The party planning website Partyguide.ch set a record for page views. These are the findings from Net-Audit.
The leisure portal Partyguide.ch attracts visitors the longest. This is the result of the new figures from Net-Audit by Wemf. In August, Party-Guide had an average dwell time per visitor of 20.47 minutes, which is probably due to the numerous party pictures on the website. In terms of page impressions, Partyguide.ch also leads the ranking of the 124 websites examined by Wemf and recorded over 100 million clicked pages. The leisure site achieved around 2.4 million visits. Most online editions of the Swiss media grew last month, even though their printed counterparts lost circulation. Blick Online is ahead in terms of visits: Wemf reports around 7.3 million visits for the tabloid's website. However, growth compared to the previous month is rather low at 3.3 percent. On the other hand, the magazine Bilan from French-speaking Switzerland increased by 52.5 percent. Edelweiss, another magazine from French-speaking Switzerland, also grew strongly (53.0%). Program guides were also winners: The TV-Star website recorded 43.2 percent more visits, while TV 8 gained 59.1 percent. One of the few losers was Azonline.ch, which lost -0.8 percentage points in visits. The 20 Minuten website is not included in Net-Audit.

Three-dimensional screen seeks commercial use
On Tuesday evening, a new three-dimensional screen called Nova will make its debut at Zurich Central Station. It will remain ad-free, but commercial use is planned for future versions of the illuminated cube.
To achieve this, the aim is to talk to professionals from the advertising industry. A conventional commercial, for example, could serve as the basis for the commercial content, although it would have to be adapted. The screen requires new viewing habits, but should also serve as an oasis of calm.
The entire development of commercial use is like an experiment in which the partner companies can participate, explained Eberle. The size of the cube could also be varied for a different location. Contacts with a marketer for electronic media have not yet been established.
25,000 glowing spheresThe 3D screen is a 5x5x1 meter cuboid consisting of 25,000 glowing spheres. With an image refresh rate of 1/25 second and a color depth of 16 million colors, film sequences can be played. From one position the three-dimensional image is sharp, from another the viewer sees blurred, foggy sequences. A dynamic vanishing point simulated by software allows the image sharpness to vary. For commercial use, this aspect must be taken into consideration "You could, for example, consider which sequences from a commercial are central and show these in focus on Nova," says Eberle.
The new media format will hover permanently in the large hall of Zurich's main station for the next three years. As Martina Eberle told Werbewoche, the screen will display content from science, art and film. Companies have the opportunity to sponsor Nova content. Initially, Nova will primarily offer ETH a platform; algorithms from various research areas will be made visible. In addition, images relating to train travel will also be shown to create a link to the station as a location.
