Last but not least: The advertising deniers

A Hamburg-based communications agency has calculated how much paper and energy are consumed by the advertising mailings that end up in German mailboxes—or in the trash as soon as they pass through them—each year. Impressive.

A Hamburg-based communications agency has just calculated that around 1.3 million tons of advertising mail end up in German letterboxes every year. This corresponds to around 2.4 kilograms per household per month. In comparison, the total annual consumption of paper in Germany is around 21 million tons, meaning that advertising mail accounts for around 6 percent.
According to the agency, the ecological consequences of the bulging German post boxes are catastrophic. It takes about the same amount of energy to produce one ton of paper as it does to produce one ton of steel. The comparison may be a little confusing in the internet age, but it sounds like a lot. In addition, the 1.3 million tons of paper used for advertising mailings produce about as much CO2 as 840,000 cars every year. That is quite impressive.
The analysis by the Hamburg-based company also showed that more than half of this advertising mail is thrown away unread. In addition, the number of advertising refusers (those with stickers on their letterboxes) in Germany has now risen to 20 percent. In many large cities, the figure is even as high as 50 percent. It goes without saying that the agency is promoting itself as an efficient alternative following this dismantling of direct mail. However, the figures themselves do not exactly indicate a high degree of efficiency in the advertising that ends up in letterboxes.

Stricter rules for tracking advertising in the UK

The British online advertising trade association, the IAB, has established a set of quality standards for the industry regarding ad tracking. This is in response to growing criticism of this form of advertising, which is not without its issues regarding data protection.

The Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB), the British trade association for online advertising, has defined a series of guidelines for so-called tracking advertising. In doing so, the industry is focusing on self-regulation in an area of advertising that is becoming increasingly popular with advertisers, but which is causing increasing public controversy due to the violation of privacy. With tracking advertising or behavioral advertising, Internet companies such as Google or Yahoo track the surfing behavior of users, analyze their search queries and then place appropriate advertising.
The guidelines laid down by the IAB are primarily intended to limit the possibility of misuse of collected user data. In future, companies such as Phorm (manufacturer of an online tracking system), AOL, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo will have to inform users if they analyze their behaviour on the web for advertising purposes. Wherever possible, the express consent of users should be obtained before monitoring begins. Users must also have the option of opting out at any time.
This offensive by the industry is clearly an anticipatory and confidence-building measure. The quality standards for personalized online advertising are probably intended to take the wind out of the sails of public criticism of tracking advertising. The form of advertising was discussed very controversially in the USA in the middle of last year, for example. It is also an issue in Germany, where the trend is clearly towards more restrictive legislation.

Set-top boxes: National Council in favor of free choice of device

Consumers should be able to freely choose their digital cable television receiver. With a motion, the National Council is calling on the Federal Council to provide the legal basis for this.

Consumers should be able to freely choose their digital cable television receiver. With a motion, the National Council is calling on the Federal Council to provide the legal basis for this.
The Council of States criticizes the fact that Cablecom encodes free TV channels and only allows them to be decoded using a set-top box that can be purchased or rented from the company. In the fall of 2007, it therefore passed a motion calling for a ban on encryption or an open standard for operating systems.
At the request of its committee, the National Council approved an amended text on Thursday by 124 votes to 48, as reported by SDA. The Federal Council is to create the legal basis to be able to issue a ban on the encryption of free TV channels. In the case of encryption, customers should be able to choose the reception device under appropriate conditions. At the same time, the newly formulated motion demands that the provision of television programs via Internet Protocol Television IPTV (Swisscom's Bluewin TV) should not be made unnecessarily difficult. Distortions of competition between different technologies should also be avoided as far as possible.
