Indirect press promotion: Federal Council sets reduction for postal delivery

The Federal Council has set the discount for the postal delivery of regional newspapers and magazines for 2016. The discount for local and regional newspapers is 25 centimes per copy. For membership and foundation press, the discount is 15 centimes per copy.

This means that the reduction for local and regional newspapers will be 2 centimes higher than in the current year. As of October 1, 142 titles met the requirements for this indirect press subsidy, as announced by the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) on Friday.

Shipping volume declines

The number of titles eligible for subsidies has fallen by one compared to the previous year, while the number of subsidized copies has fallen by 3.4 million. In the membership and foundation press category, the discount will be increased by 1 centime per copy compared to 2015. 1066 titles met the requirements for the subsidy, 53 fewer than in the previous year. The distribution volume fell by 6.3 million to 133.3 million copies. According to the press release, the reasons for the decline are the merging of titles, too few subscribers, insufficient publication frequency or the discontinuation of a title as a printed edition. The federal government spends around CHF 50 million a year on indirect press subsidies. Local and regional newspapers receive 30 million francs, while membership and foundation press receive 20 million francs. The reductions are calculated on the basis of the previous year's figures.

Subsidies not exhausted in 2014

Because circulation figures are falling, the subsidies were not used up in 2014. The money not paid out is added to the annual subsidy contributions made by the Federal Council. Indirect press subsidies are important to Parliament. It removed the support from the KAP savings program. Only on Thursday, the Council of States also supported a motion from the National Council in principle to prevent indirect press funding from falling victim to future austerity programs. (SDA)

Havas Worldwide: Peace in the house

Sägesser windows are best known for their high safety standards. They also provide excellent noise protection. To highlight this feature, Havas Worldwide Zurich has launched two new print campaigns.

The subjects show how the windows transform the noise from outside into something quiet as soon as the sound threatens to penetrate inside. A jumbo jet thus becomes a paper airplane in the blink of an eye, and a leaf blower a mop. The message is just as simple: So quiet becomes noise. The subjects have been on display since the beginning of November.

HR Excellence Award: Swiss successes

The Human Resources Excellence Awards in Berlin are the most important event recognizing creative HR work in the German-speaking world. In addition to VBZ and Ruf Lanz, Die Post and Meta Design were also among the winners in 2015.

For the fourth time, VBZ and Ruf Lanz have won the coveted award for an exceptional HR campaign. This time in the category "SME Employer Branding Strategy". The winner was the campaign "Invisible VBZ Talents" (Werbewoche.ch reported). The background: Almost 1'000 of around 2'400 VBZ employees do not drive buses or streetcars and are barely visible to the public. Because VBZ wants to attract around 100 such invisible talents every year, Ruf Lanz put four of them at the center of its personnel campaign. The employees were painted with great attention to detail until they blended in with the Zurich cityscape.

This year, the employer branding strategy of Swiss Post, which Meta Design and HR Marketing at Swiss Post developed in close collaboration, also received an award. The concept includes a Group-wide, long-term internal branding initiative. The goal is to anchor Swiss Post's new vision and, in the long term, to change the external perception of Swiss Post as a modern and attractive employer. As a first step, an interactive engagement campaign was launched with an internal social media platform. In the campaign, employees generated content that is used as maximum credible evidence in external HR communication.

"Everything much easier with Schulthess machines".

To mark its 170th anniversary, Schulthess Maschinen is launching new washing machines and dryers. The company has commissioned Dotpulse to provide online marketing support for the launch of the new Spirit line of household appliances.

At the center of the online marketing measures is the Brand Experience Website. Banners, Adwords and advertising on Facebook lead interested, affine consumers to this brand experience website, which is intended to positively influence their decision-making process when buying a new washing machine. Interested consumers experience the features of the new machines interactively and multimedia-based on their screen. This is Schulthess Maschinen's first step towards a virtual showroom; the Brand Experience website will be successively expanded to deepen the brand experience.

Buying a washing machine or a tumble dryer is an investment decision that requires accompaniment. The potentials are identified by means of competitive questions on the Brand Experience website. A multi-stage e-mail marketing program supports the evaluation and purchase process.

Last but not least: So how now?

Can organic farming in Nicaragua save our Aletsch Glacier? Answers to this question are provided by the Schneuwly couple, well-known from SRF; chart-topping singer Bubi Rufener (Bubi Eifach); and Yann Provenzano, a Facebook and YouTube star popular in French-speaking Switzerland.

If agriculture worldwide were to switch to organic methods, this would have a clearly positive impact on the climate. An organic farmer produces only half as much CO2 as a conventional farmer or an industrial farm. Less CO2 in turn means less global warming. And less global warming means that our glaciers are melting more slowly. Just in time for the climate summit in Paris, Kargo Kommunikation implemented a nationwide, cross-media campaign for Swissaid on this topic - called "Mitigation" - in a playful and humorous way.

The Schneuwly couple, well-known from SRF, the chart topper Bubi Rufener (Bubi Eifach) and Yann Provenzano, a popular Facebook and YouTube star in French-speaking Switzerland, tackle the question of how an organic farmer from Nicaragua can save the Aletsch Glacier. The thoroughly creative answers and the complex facts are presented on a responsive Microsite explained and visualized using videos and interactive infographics.

The national campaign has been running since November 26. The topic is being staged on the microsite, in the newsletter, on advertisements, large-scale banners, YouTube True View and Masthead as well as within social media channels. (uma)

Parliament wants to maintain indirect press funding

The federal government should continue to reduce the cost of newspaper delivery. Parliament has instructed the Federal Council to maintain indirect press subsidies. On Thursday, the Council of States approved an amended motion from the National Council.

The small chamber approved the motion by National Councillor Christine Bulliard (CVP/FR) without opposition. The motion was submitted with a view to the KAP austerity program, which Parliament has since adopted. The Federal Council had wanted to dispense with indirect press subsidies as part of this savings program. However, the National Council and Council of States did not agree with this and deleted the measure. The aim now is to prevent press funding from being called into question again in future austerity programs. At the request of its committee, the Council of States has therefore slightly amended the text of the motion relating to the KAP. The National Council will have to decide on this once again.

The Councillors want to create clarity with the mandate to the Federal Council: The deletion of indirect press subsidies via compensation to Swiss Post should be avoided - at least as long as there is no real alternative. Speakers in the Council of States pointed out the difficult financial situation of many newspapers. Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard assured them that the Federal Council wanted to continue indirect press subsidies for the time being. However, alternatives would require an amendment to the constitution, and even the industry does not want that. With the current constitution and legislation, it would only be possible to increase support for the SDA news agency. This would help the small publishers to reduce costs, said Leuthard. Parliament would be able to decide on this. (SDA)

Former Federal Council spokesman works for Martullo-Blocher

Livio Zanolari, former spokesperson for the Federal Council, will become the media spokesperson and personal aide to SVP National Council member Magdalena Martullo-Blocher.

Her father, former Federal Councillor Christoph Blocher, had already used the services of the South Grisons native. Magdalena Martullo-Blocher from Zurich, who was elected to the National Council in Graubünden, relies on the services of Livio Zanolari for her political activities and not as an entrepreneur and head of Ems-Chemie. He is responsible for the SVP National Councillor's parliamentary work, Zanolari said on Thursday in response to an inquiry, confirming a report in the local newspaper Il Grigione Italiano.

From spring, 60-year-old Zanolari will be working for National Councillor Martullo-Blocher. At the end of February, he will give up his position as Head of Communications at the Graubünden-based electricity company Repower after three and a half years. Zanolari himself is a member of the SVP. He ran unsuccessfully for the National Council in 2011 and 2015. The former Graubünden CVP councillor worked for six federal councillors for 12 years, most recently for Federal Councillor Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf. (SDA)

Agency at the airport builds on Swiss wood for Schöb

The Swiss timber system manufacturer Schöb relies almost exclusively on wood from local forests. This had to be emphasized in the new image campaign.

The key visuals developed by the agency at the airport visualize solidity and down-to-earthness with carved model houses growing out of a tree stump in the middle of a Swiss forest - the values that the family business has stood for for more than 60 years.
