Different ways of providing information on the national channels

The SRG television stations fulfill their information mandate in different ways, as a study conducted by the University of Fribourg on behalf of the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) shows. According to the study, information programs on Swiss-German television SF are the least frequent. SF 1 and SF zwei devoted just 23 percent of their broadcasting time to these programs, as Joachim Trebbe, head of the study, said on Wednesday at OFCOM's annual media conference in Biel. In contrast, French- and Italian-language channels deal more frequently with relevant information topics. For TSR 1 and 2, the corresponding share is 35%, for RSI 1 and 2 36%.
By information, the researchers involved understand publicly relevant topics such as politics or factual topics as well as privately relevant topics: Programs that depict viewers' lives and human-touch topics. This contrasts with films, shows, games and sports programs.
However, Trebbe also warned against over-interpreting the data. The figures mentioned could only tell us to a limited extent how much importance is attached to the information channels, as repetitions of info programs, for example, distort the figures. But even after subtracting these effects, Swiss German television broadcasts fewer information programs than the other public broadcasters.

PWC study: Increasing digitalization in the media and entertainment industry
Over the next five years, digitization in the media and entertainment industry will continue to grow—at a pace that is independent of the availability of broadband and mobile infrastructure.
Digitization in the media and entertainment industry will continue to increase over the next five years. This will happen at a speed that is independent of the availability of broadband and mobile infrastructure. The industry will grow by an average of 2.7% per year worldwide to 1,600 billion dollars by 2013. This is according to the annual study "Global Entertainment & Media Outlook 2009-2013" published by Pricewaterhouse Coopers PWC.
In addition, industry revenues are expected to fall by 3.9% to just under 1,350 billion dollars in the current year. Next year, 2010, the market will recover and grow by an average of 7.1% annually from 2011 to 2013 to 1,600 billion dollars. According to the study, the Asia-Pacific region is growing the fastest at 4.9 percent annually with a total volume of 413 billion dollars in 2013.
The international share of online advertising will increase from around 12% in the previous year to 18% in 2013. The video game market will grow by 7.4 percent annually from 51.4 billion dollars last year to 73.5 billion dollars in 2013, as the study further states.
The fastest growing categories are online and wireless games. Their market will grow by 10.6 percent for online games and 13.8 percent for wireless games by 2013. The market for traditional PC games, on the other hand, will continue to shrink.

Broad front against excessive grid fees
Various consumer protection organizations, the Swiss Trade Association, the Price Supervisor, private telecommunications providers, and other associations and organizations are opposing excessive network access prices in the telecommunications sector. They are all calling for the network valuation to no longer be artificially inflated as part of the revision of the Telecommunications Services Ordinance (FDV).
The Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) has published its comments on the Ordinance on Telecommunications Services (TSO). The revision sought by the Federal Council aims to take account of previous experience and recent developments in the telecommunications market. According to Sunrise, the public hearing on the revision has now confirmed that the current method for the network valuation of the last mile is controversial. A broad opposition to the current practice has formed, Sunrise writes in a press release issued on Wednesday. The conviction has grown that the former monopolist's telephone network, which has evolved over time, has largely been written off and is hardly ever renewed. There is therefore no reason to calculate Swisscom's usage costs on the basis of a complete overhaul of the old copper network. Instead, the actual costs that are still being incurred today for the old copper network should be used for the calculation.
This position in the planned revision of the FDV is supported by numerous associations, organizations and specialist bodies, including consumer protection organizations, the Swiss Trade Association, the price watchdog and private telecoms providers. According to the telephone provider, switching to a method that only charges the actual costs would reduce the costs for users of the old Swisscom network by around CHF 400 million per year. This would lead to increased competition, with a greater choice of telephony and Internet services.
Swisscom remains market leader
As the Federal Office of Communications Bakom Swisscom explained at its annual conference in Biel today, Swisscom remains the market leader in the Swiss telecoms market. According to Netzwoche, the telco achieved a market share of 52 percent in the broadband sector and as much as 76 percent for DSL connections. Swisscom is also still very present in the fixed network and mobile telephony sector. It has a market share of 61.9%, while other providers in the EU only have an average of 38.3%.
Compared to the EU countries, however, the price level in Switzerland remains high. The average mobile customer in Switzerland pays 30.69 euros per month compared to 19.49 euros in the EU.

Uncertain future for World Radio Switzerland
Switzerland's only English-language radio station faces an uncertain future: If the cost-cutting measures planned by the SRG for 2010 and 2011 prove insufficient, the SRG might consider shutting down World Radio Switzerland.
SRG posted a loss of CHF 79 million last year. The only English-language radio station in Switzerland now faces an uncertain future: if the SRG's planned cost-cutting measures for 2010 and 2011 are not sufficient, it could consider discontinuing WRS, according to WRS Director Philippe Mottaz in an interview with the "Tribune de Genève".
As part of its cost-cutting efforts, SRG is considering discontinuing the channel, which currently has a budget of CHF 3.9 million. Its discontinuation would therefore not be associated with major savings. On the other hand, SRG would be missing an opportunity to show that the public service can be bold and innovative.
The station has around 120,000 listeners, half of whom come from English-speaking countries.
