Press council supports Landbote editor-in-chief in "hunter dispute

The editor-in-chief of the Winterthurer Landbote dismissed a columnist for valid reasons. The Swiss Press Council rejected a complaint filed by the columnist, as the council announced on Tuesday. The dispute arose over a column about hunters.

In the controversial column, the author Nicolas Lindt told a story that friends had experienced with their dog. The free-ranging animal had attacked a deer, which fled, but was later searched for by hunters and shot. The incident had a legal aftermath.

Lindt took the side of the dog, which kills according to its nature. Hunters against it are basically serial killers, who would commit a murder on each hunt from blood lust. The argument of the game population regulation was pure Bemäntelung. Then Lindt struck the bow to the meat consumption in itself: In the slaughterhouses a mass murder without equal takes place daily.

After the column appeared in the "Tribüne" of June 18, 2011, the hunting community contacted editor-in-chief Colette Gradwohl. Jagd Zürich sent a rejoinder, which was published in the paper a week later - with a note from the editors stating that Lindt's column did not correctly reflect the facts in essential points.

In advance, Gradwohl had sent the article to Lindt, but the latter had not responded. At the same time, she informed him of the end of the cooperation.

A "Tribüne" article does not have to reflect the editorial opinion. However, it must be possible to rely on the fact that the articles are correctly researched, that the facts presented are true and that the content is not disparaging.

This had not been the case with his column. Later, Gradwohl explained that the decisive factor in her decision was that the story was not about a friend's dog, but about Lindt's own. In doing so, he had deceived the editors and readers and betrayed their trust.

Lindt did not want to accept the termination of the cooperation. He filed a complaint with the Press Council. Gradwohl had acted hastily under pressure from the hunting community. It had violated the declaration of the duties and rights of journalists.

The press council rejected now the complaint, as it is called in the report. The assertion that the editor-in-chief had buckled under pressure from the hunting community was not substantiated. On the contrary: The indicated journalistic reasons for the termination of co-operation appeared plausible. Gradwohl had not violated the guidelines.

Journalists in French-speaking Switzerland receive higher wages

The publishers' association Médias Suisses and the journalists' association Impressum have reached an agreement before the arbitration court. According to the agreement, journalists in French-speaking Switzerland who are subject to the Press CBA will receive a 2.5 percent pay rise from March.

This was announced by Imprint on Tuesday. The journalists' association had appealed to the arbitration court at the end of 2010 to adjust the guidelines for minimum wages in the collective agreement for western Switzerland. Impressum demanded a six percent increase in minimum wages, while the publishers in French-speaking Switzerland did not want to grant any wage increase at all. The arbitration court has now reached a compromise. According to the agreement, journalists who are subject to the press CBA in French-speaking Switzerland will receive a 2.5 percent wage increase starting next March 1. According to the imprint, exceptions are possible for media companies that can prove they are in trouble for economic reasons.

ZSPR: Do not jeopardize credibility

On Monday evening, Lucerne Cantonal President Yvonne Schärli-Gerig and Lucerne City Councilmember Ursula Stämmer-Horst spoke at the New Year’s reception hosted by the Central Switzerland Public Relations Association about how they engage in dialogue with citizens.

As tradition would have it, the regional communications industry meets every year in the first half of January for the New Year's Apéro of the Central Switzerland Public Relations Society (ZSPR). Communication must be credible and geared to the recipients, demanded Yvonne Schärli-Gerig, president of the Lucerne government, in her welcome message. For the task is not yet done with dissemination alone. She illustrated this with everyday encounters. For example, when she was asked on the street about her glasses rather than, as expected, about a controversial political issue. Or that she was repeatedly mistaken for Ursula Stämmer-Horst.

The Lucerne city councilor has also had the opposite experience. She was mistaken for Yvonne Schärli-Gerig. Ursula Stämmer-Horst underlined the experiences of the previous speaker and added: "It's important to me that communication is always based on honesty and takes place against a relevant background." She draws a positive interim conclusion on the pilot project with social media. Since April 2011, the city of Lucerne has consistently taken social media such as Facebook and Twitter into account in its communications.

Brigitte Heinrich, President of the ZSPR, thanked the two politicians and pointed out a special feature of the communications industry: According to a recent industry study, women make up the majority of communications professionals in Switzerland, at 60 percent. In the age group up to 30 years, 78 percent are women.

Maxomedia and Auto Scout 24 get your life rolling

A car in your living room? With Maxomedia and Auto Scout 24, this dream can be realized immediately. At least in the new advertising campaign.

New year, new Auto Scout 24 campaign. This runs under the motto "Get your life rolling" and was realized by the Maxomedia agency. At the heart of the campaign is the TV commercial, which has been running since the beginning of the year and demonstrates the diversity and experience of the Autoscout24.ch range in an appealing way. The dream car is brought directly into the living room at the click of a mouse and extensively tested there. The TV commercial was produced in collaboration with Top-Fuel Entertainment.

The commercial manages without any music at all - if the opening and closing of car doors or the rich bubbling of the starting V8 engine isn't music enough. In addition to the TV commercial, the slogan will also be conveyed via display ads, advertisements and posters. The national campaign will run until the end of the year.

Vitamin 2 was founded ten years ago. The St. Gallen agency is celebrating this with an anniversary book.

Ten years ago, Wikipedia went online, Apple launched iTunes and the first Harry Potter movie was shown in theaters, the agency said in a statement. Press Council protects 20 Minutes online picture report

20 Minuten Online is also permitted to report that sexual misconduct allegations against celebrities repeatedly become stumbling blocks in their careers, as in the case of meteorologist Jörg Kachelmann. According to the Press Council, his final acquittal does not change this.

On November 5, 2011, 20 Minuten Online showed under the title "Men between power, violence and sex" Images of former IMF director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Jörg Kachelmann, Julian Assange of Wiki- Leaks and US politician Herman Cain.

Underneath it read, "Republican Herman Cain has stumbled over sex allegations on his way to the White House. He's not the first. The combination of sex, violence and power seems to be piling up."

As a result, a complaint was received by the Press Council. The compilation suggested that Kachelmann was associated with the term "men between power, violence and sex" and that he was a criminal, "like the other three alleged sex offenders depicted". This was damaging to his reputation, he said, because Kachelmann had been legally acquitted and was innocent.

The Press Council assessed the complaint as unfounded and did not act on it, as it announced on Tuesday. The complainant's thesis that the impression was conveyed that Kachelmann was a sex offender - despite his legally binding acquittal - was obviously untenable.

None of the four people pictured was convicted of a crime at the time of the statement, nor did the author claim this. She was addressing the context according to which "sex allegations, regardless of their truthfulness, repeatedly turn out to be a stumbling block for celebrities". 20 Minuten Online is allowed to address this connection with Kachelmann even after his acquittal. Press Council: Not everyone is entitled to coverage

The public's right to information does not mean an individual's right to report on himself. The Swiss Press Council did not uphold a complaint by Zurich Council of States candidate Toni Stadelmann against the Tages-Anzeiger.

Stadelmann ran as an outsider in the Zurich elections for the Council of States last year. He and two other lone candidates entered the second ballot together with political heavyweights Verena Diener (GLP, previously), Felix Gutzwiller (FDP, previously) and Christoph Blocher (SVP, new).

It was not objectionable that the Tages-Anzeiger limited its coverage to Diener, Gutzwiller and Blocher - the three candidates who had "at least a rudimentary realistic chance of election," the press council said in a statement Tuesday. It is true that the media are obliged to grant small parties and political minorities a "minimum of media attention". However, this does not necessarily apply to individual candidates without a social group behind them.

The Tages-Anzeiger had therefore not violated the declaration of journalists' duties and rights, as the complainant claimed. Stadelmann had also filed a similar complaint against the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. The Press Council did not act on either complaint. (SDA)

The Match Communications agency developed the mailing on behalf of EMC with the aim of communicating the compelling product benefits, creating a positive customer experience as well as product preference.
