Nasal spray ad causes uproar on Facebook
In Cannes, the Saatchi & Saatchi commercial won a gold award, but on Otriven's Facebook page, it has been met with a barrage of criticism. The commercial, which is actually funny, is being called discriminatory and disrespectful.
Who hasn't experienced this? Your nose is constantly blocked due to a cold, but nobody wants to stay at home because of it. You struggle through the day with difficult breathing and end up simply breathing through your mouth. You can imagine that an open mouth doesn't look very nice. This is exactly the idea that the agency Saatchi & Saatchi used in its commercials for the nasal spray Otriven from Novartis.
A girl sits at school with her mouth open - visibly suffering from a cold - and is only given a small pair of scissors to do handicrafts with. A man stands at the bus stop - his mouth also open - and gets his open shoelace tied by a woman. The advertising slogan "You look dumber with your mouth open" appears at the end of both clips. This is intended to explain: If you sit or stand around with your mouth open, you look dumber and that's why you get smaller scissors or someone ties your shoes.
This would not be a problem if it had been Facebook There was no boycott against the videos. Several people commented on the clip as disrespectful and discriminatory towards people with Down's syndrome. They often have problems breathing and therefore have their mouths open. Otriven has now taken this boycott seriously and taken the commercials offline. Although they did not want to offend anyone, as Otriven explains on Facebook, they have taken the criticism to heart and deleted the films.
