Indirectly identified: Press Council approves complaint against AZ

An accountant accused of embezzlement in court complained to the Press Council: the Aargauerzeitung had indirectly identified him in its court reporting. The Press Council upholds the complaint.

The naming of the defendant's place of residence as well as the mention of his former honorary activity for a named sports association was not mandatory for the reporting. A regional reference could also have been established by mentioning the region of residence and the exact designation of the association was not decisive for the understanding of the offense. The "Aargauerzeitung" had therefore violated paragraph 7 of the "Declaration of the Duties and Rights of Journalists" (identification).
