Frame Eleven: Animation films for the Paul Scherrer Institute

In 13 animated films by Frame Eleven, researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute explain in an easy-to-understand way what they are currently working on.

Anyone visiting the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland's largest research center for natural and engineering sciences, will now receive a personal welcome in the visitor center: In 13 animated films, researchers explain what they are working on. Frame Eleven produced and implemented the almost one and a half minute films for the new exhibition by the Netwerch office.

Under the title "Visiting researchers!", PSI researchers provide an easy-to-understand insight into their field of research, from medical proton therapy to energy storage in the form of hydrogen. For the team, there were some peculiarities in the realization: "In order for us to be able to explain the essence of the respective field of research and translate it into film, we first had to understand it to some extent ourselves," says director Oliver Aemisegger. The unique working environment also challenged Fabien Pannatier, cameraman and editor: "Many plants were too big to be able to put them on one frame. Or the processes were so
tiny or fast that they can be observed with PSI's large-scale research facilities, but not with our camera."

Drawn figures as a solution

The solution is drawn and animated figures. They speak in original sound in the voice of the real scientists and move completely freely in the real backgrounds. The cut-out style illustrations are designed with simple basic shapes and make the person and character of the respective researcher discreetly perceptible. Oliver Aemisegger: "I didn't want the illustrations to steal the show from the exciting people behind them."
