Andrea Freiermuth wins Imholz Sponsorship Award

The Imholz Award, worth 7,500 Swiss francs, presented by the Hans Imholz Foundation and the Swiss Travelwriters Club, goes to Andrea Freiermuth for her idea to travel through the Amazon Basin using public transportation.

The 40-year-old freelance journalist is the first winner of the only Swiss journalism prize that does not recognize a report that has already been published, but starts a few steps earlier: with the idea.

Andrea Freiermuth convinced the three-member jury, consisting of Oswald Iten (President Swiss Travelwriters Club), Sonja Hüsler (Board Member Swiss Travelwriters Clubs) and Christoph Ammann (Head of Travel Department Sonntagszeitung and STC founding member), with her concept of traveling from Quito in Ecuador to the Atlantic using various buses and boats. "I had the idea at the beginning of the year when I was traveling on the Rio Napo in Ecuador and the outboard motor broke down. A fellow traveler joked that we would now be like Francisco de Orellana, who took a year to get from the Andean highlands to the mouth of the Amazon in the 16th century. I imagined what the modern traveler would experience on such a long river journey," said Freiermuth in a statement. Today, the journey can be completed in a month, the journalist estimates.

Andrea Freiermuth has made a name for herself in recent years for her cycling and hiking reports. The Fricktal native has worked for the Aargauer Zeitung, the Berner Zeitung and the Beobacher Natur. She has recently started freelancing.

Together with Zurich travel pioneer Hans Imholz, the Swiss Travelwriters Club and the Sonntagszeitung are looking forward to the report that Andrea Freiermuth will be researching in the fall. Her text is expected to be published in the Sonntagszeitung in 2014.

More than 30 journalists applied for the Imholz Award. The range of ideas was broad, as was the variety of destinations: The Solomon Islands, Laos, Gabon, Ibiza or Greece were among them. The quality of the dossiers submitted was also high. The conditions of participation for the second edition of the Imholz Promotion Award will be communicated at the beginning of 2014.

Maurice Lacroix's new advertising locomotive pulled into Zurich main station on track 18 on Thursday morning. It has been on the Swiss rail network for a year as the first locomotive from a watch brand.

Marc Gläser, Managing Director of Maurice Lacroix, was present in the driver's cab. After brief speeches by SBB and Maurice Lacroix, the advertising locomotive was ceremoniously christened with champagne and handed over to the public. "With this commitment, we want to make the Maurice Lacroix brand better known throughout Switzerland and anchor the brand even more firmly," explained Marc Gläser.

From now on, the advertising locomotive will run on the entire Swiss rail network for a year. It is the first locomotive in Switzerland to be adorned with the image of a watch brand.

Facebook makes advertising in the USA even more personalized

Advertisers on Facebook in the U.S. can now target audiences even more precisely with their ads. For example, in the future, they could run targeted ads for members who buy breakfast cereal for their children or who are likely to buy a new car in the coming months.

Facebook explained this at the presentation of the service on Wednesday. The new service also uses external information from several American data analysis companies such as Acxiom and Datalogix. Facebook emphasized that no personal data would be shared. Advertisers would only see how many people belonged to a target group.

Over 500 customer groups were defined at the launch. Personalized advertising is seen as Facebook's major advantage - after all, the online network knows a lot about the preferences of its more than one billion members.

Linking this with information about purchasing behaviour from other sources opens up even more opportunities for the advertising industry, even if all parties involved emphasize that only anonymized information is visible. For example, the digital boss of drinks giant PepsiCo enthused in the Wall Street Journal that different advertisements could now be displayed depending on whether someone prefers the classic Pepsi with sugar or the light version. There is also the group that switches between different brands - these customers are known to be particularly price-conscious.

The Facebook examples contained categories such as "buyers of frozen products" or "buyers of dairy products and eggs". In the case of prospective car buyers, you can differentiate quite precisely between vehicle classes.

Facebook emphasizes that users can permanently hide ads from a specific advertising partner. At the same time, the data collectors involved have promised to become more transparent. The company Acxiom, which has collected information on around 700 million people, announced that they would soon be able to see what is known about them.

The innovations are also important because it is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid advertising on Facebook. With the rise of smartphones and tablets, Facebook is increasingly shifting ads into members' news feeds. Previously, they were displayed more unobtrusively at the edge of the screen on PCs and not at all in the apps for mobile devices. Advertising is Facebook's key source of revenue and success with ads on mobile devices is seen as crucial to the online network's commercial future. (SDA)

Poster exhibition opens in Basel

The APG|SGA exhibition «Swiss Posters of the Year 2012» opened successfully amid changeable April weather and before a packed audience. Slam poet Renato Kaiser set the mood with his witty comments on the winning posters.

Over 100 invited guests attended the vernissage in the courtyard of the Kunsthalle restaurant in Basel, examined the posters that won the Swiss Poster Award and voted for their favorite regional poster using the Shortcut app. The host of APG|SGA, Christian Senn, and the Head of Cantonal and Urban Development Basel, Thomas Keller, welcomed the guests before a somewhat different kind of lecture followed: Swiss slam poet Renato Kaiser commented on the Gold Posters of 2012 with wit and bite.

The exhibition will take place in the courtyard of the Kunsthalle restaurant in Basel and will be open to the public from April 11 to April 18, 2013. After Basel, the exhibition will move on to Lucerne, where it will also be on display for a week from May 16 to 23, 2013. The next stops are St. Gallen and Chur.

Each of the six award winners was presented with the diamond for their outstanding work and the sum of 20,000 francs. The winners of the Swiss Press Photo category each received CHF 2,000. The publisher-independent Fondation Reinhardt von Graffenried was founded by Franziska and Erwin Reinhardt-Scherz together with Charles von Graffenried - who passed away last July - with the aim of promoting Swiss journalism. 2013 marks the 27th year of the Swiss Prize for Local Journalism and the 22nd for Swiss Press Photo.

Swiss Post is a partner for the award ceremony, which is followed by the open-end party at the Hotel Bellevue.

The yearbook with the best Swiss press photos is published by Benteli Verlag and is available in bookshops. The national touring exhibition "Swiss Press Photo 13" begins on April 19 at the National Museum in Zurich before moving on to Lugano, Bern and Prangins. The iPhone app is available free of charge from the App Store.

The Swiss Media Prize for Local Journalism Print
Rico Czerwinski for "Die Anomalie" published on April 14, 2012 in Das Magazin.
The number of traffic accidents is falling throughout Switzerland. This also applies to public transport companies. But not for VBZ, Zurich's public transport company. Rico Czerwinski has tackled this phenomenon and discovered that VBZ has an extreme work culture that is also very different from that of other transport companies, according to the jury. Why are the accident figures rising? Where is the control system lacking? Czerwinski sheds light on the anomaly in two articles.

The Swiss Media Prize for Local Journalism Online
Philipp Loser for "The Citizens' Agenda", published on August 1, 2012 on Tageswoche.ch.
In the run-up to elections, political parties try to keep themselves in the limelight with all kinds of topics. However, Tageswoche did not want to let the politicians dictate the topics for the 2012 government and Grand Council elections. The editorial team went out into the city districts and listened to the concerns of the population. The most urgent questions were handed over to the candidates to answer. Thanks to detailed evaluations on maps and in databases on a specially developed election portal, the focus of the election coverage was suddenly not on the politicians' slogans, but on the concerns of the citizens - "The Citizens Agenda", according to the jury on their choice.

The Swiss Media Prize for Local Journalism Radio
Simon Corthay for "Intouchables . version Suisse", broadcast on January 28, 2012 in the program "15 minutes" on Radio RTS La 1ère.
No movie moved Switzerland as much in 2012 as "Intouchables". Do such unequal couples also exist in Switzerland? Simon Corthay investigated this question for "La Première" on RTS. It quickly became clear that individual care for quadriplegics in Switzerland is by no means an exception. It also became clear that you don't have to be a billionaire in Switzerland to be able to afford individual care. According to the jury, the result is a multi-layered report on "Intochables", version suisse.

The Swiss Media Prize for Local Journalism Television
Corinne Eisenring for "Low voter turnout" broadcast on February 1, 2012 on Swiss television SRF in "Schweiz Aktuell"
There are 75 voters in the Graubünden municipality of Schnaus. In a cantonal vote at the beginning of 2012, only one of them went to the ballot box. Corinne Eisenring went in search of this person for the Swiss television program "Rundschau". In particular, she met villagers who explained why they had skipped the vote. In the end, she found the distiller Peder Caspescha, whose vote alone determined the result in the municipality.

Le Temps with new themed supplements

Starting this Saturday, April 13, the newspaper Le Temps will expand its weekend edition to include two new sections focused on society: culture and literature.

To be in the center of creative activity, to accompany the great changes since the beginning of this century, to spend time to better understand contemporary events, to listen to world-enchanting artists, to track down men and women who are shaping tomorrow and to keep up with new ways of living, living spaces and consumer habits of our time - these are the goals of the new readers' meeting on Saturday, according to the announcement.

The "Society & Culture" supplement focuses on the principled discussions that move our lives, but also on private events that take our minds off the daily reports of violent acts, according to the release. In the first issue of the new Culture on Saturday, Le Temps is offering its readers the opportunity to subscribe to a limited edition artwork by writer and designer Frédérik Pajak as part of an exclusive subscription. The print, specially drawn in ink for the cover of Kultur am Samstag on December 22, 2012, numbered and signed by the artist, is in a portfolio. The edition is limited to 75 copies.

Culture on Saturday "Literature" is a section devoted exclusively to books, Le Temps continues in its press release. All genres of literature are discussed, from novels to essays and from comics to paperback editions. A new column also takes up the challenge of explaining current events on the basis of a classic text.

Serranetga: fuss about the "Velokafi

In the Zurich region, the «Velokafi» launched last week caused controversy due to the driving ban - and above all attracted attention.

The Zurich Civil Engineering Office and Serranetga launched the first "Velokafi" last week. It offers cyclists the opportunity to drink a coffee on their bikes. The idea was immediately well received, the agency said. Barely an hour after the city's civil engineering department sent out the media release, the Tages-Anzeiger newspaper reported widely on its online portal, "This just looks like an April Fool's joke." Other online portals followed, as did radio and TV stations and the major print media. In particular, the fact that one has to get off one's bike to get to the "Velokafi" at the Rathauscafé on Zurich's Limmatquai due to the driving ban was controversially discussed, the agency continued. Even the Zurich media police officer Marco Cortesi had to comment on the situation in a TV report.

With the discussion about where one is allowed to ride a bike and where not, the communication goals were achieved, as the agency writes. However, the "Velokafi" will not be on the "Trottoir" for long. It goes on tour, various Zurich scene localities would already queue up. The high viral spread via social media - numerous mentions in trend and design blogs, dozens of tweets in Japan and the USA, among others - has even led to an inquiry from California: There, they now want the construction plans.

Responsible at the Civil Engineering Office of the City of Zurich: Evelyne Richiger (Project Management). Responsible at Serranetga: Nicolas Hostettler (project management), Samuel Textor, Pascal Deville (creative direction), Thomas Blumer (idea/concept), Philippe Lehmann, Roli Hofer (design), Schreinerei Rohrer (production), Per Kasch (photo/film), Florian Baeker (film editing).
