Coop acquires internet store Nettoshop

Coop has acquired RS Vertriebs AG, thereby bringing Nettoshop—the online store for household appliances—under its umbrella. In this way, the major retailer is securing the necessary expertise in online sales.

According to a statement from SDA, Coop's decision to buy the company is primarily due to its strength in online sales. With its own sales channels for electronic household appliances, Fust and Interdiscount, it would not be able to hold a candle to Nettoshop.

Both major distributors Coop and Migros are struggling with the internet, according to the press release. Migros therefore joined Digitec in 2012 and, together with its founders, set up the online department store Galaxus, which also offers household electronics, among other things. It is therefore active in the segment in which Nettoshop is the strongest player.

Both Coop and Migros have therefore gained a strong position in e-commerce through acquisitions. Only in online food retailing have the two top retail giants been able to assert themselves on their own.

It is unclear whether Coop now intends to expand further with Nettoshop or use its Internet expertise elsewhere within the Group. Coop does not comment publicly on such strategic issues, the Basel-based retailer told SDA.

Last but not least: Coca Cola likes gays - sometimes

Of all things, the saccharine Coca-Cola campaign «Reasons to Believe» is now facing accusations of discriminating against gay people.

The good prevails in the world, according to the message of the Coca Cola commercial broadcast throughout Europe, which juxtaposes various sad everyday scenes with happy ones. However, one of the scenes, which shows a homosexual ceremony, is apparently only "a reason to believe" in certain parts of the world. It is missing in the version for Catholic Ireland. Instead, the gay ceremony was replaced by a straight marriage between a white man and a dark-skinned woman.

Coca Cola justifies itself by saying that it has taken into account the cultural circumstances of the respective markets. Surveys were conducted to find out what was perceived as "relevant and valid" in the individual countries.

As long as it does not make any discriminatory statements, a company cannot be accused of gearing its advertising messages towards the respective target markets. However, in a globalized world, it is somewhat clumsy not to consistently stand up for the propagated values even within the framework of a single morale-boosting campaign. Coca Cola might have done better to limit itself to the hetero couple. Anti-racism messages may not be as progressive, but they are politically correct across countries. (sis)

The whole spectrum of business law

Weber Harbeke developed a new website for Thouvenin Rechtsanwälte designed to bring the brand promise to life visually.

Thouvenin Attorneys at Law is a partner-managed commercial law firm in Zurich. When developing its new digital presence, the main aim was to convey that the individual lawyers complement each other ideally with their respective areas of expertise, according to a press release issued on Monday. This is because the cumulative experience of the legal staff at Thouvenin Attorneys at Law covers all areas of commercial law.

In order to make this unity in diversity tangible not only verbally in the claim "The entire spectrum of commercial law", but also visually on the homepage, the logo appears in different color areas, each representing one of the legal employees. This gives an impression of the type and size of the law firm at first glance.

As the website is increasingly being accessed from tablets and smartphones, the site has been programmed in responsive design. The result is now available on Thouvenin.com to see.

Responsible at Thouvenin Attorneys at Law: Patrick Rohn (Partner), Markus Alder (Partner). Responsible at Weber Harbeke: Thomas Harbeke (CD), Christian Sidow (text), Dieter Kubli (AD), Stefi Wolf (graphics) Sven Oeschger (strategy), Karin Both (consulting). Programming: DWB. Photos: Marc Wetli.
