Soon there will be the Baz Compact

Baz Kompakt, the latest publication from Basler Zeitung Medien, will be published three times a week starting Thursday, February 6, 2014, in tabloid format with a circulation of up to 70,000 copies.

Baz Kompakt contains the extract from two days of Basler Zeitung with different focus areas: on Tuesday sports, on Thursday culture and tips for going out, and on Saturday politics and society. Baz Kompakt relies on the thematic and content diversity of the Baz and offers it condensed to background and analysis. In the future, it is planned to make Baz Kompakt available both as an ePaper for browsers and as a smartphone and tablet app.

Baz Kompakt addresses the realization that many readers want a newspaper that condenses what's happening in politics, culture, business, sports and society without losing thematic relevance, according to a statement from the media company on Wednesday.

Wunderman on behalf of beauty

For the winter issue of Marionnaud Magazine, Wunderman was responsible for the cover story photo shoot.

The ten-page photo spread is laid out like a beauty collage, with each page subordinated to a theme and color scheme - from rock to romantic to retro. Wunderman has created a dreamy miniature landscape to present the fragrances. In the middle of the snow, among tiny fir trees, animals and snow sportsmen, the flacons stand like a modern still life. The edition is still open until 2.3.2014.

Last but not least: Baby dog causes viral hit

The British magazine Campaign has published a list of the most popular commercials from the 2014 Super Bowl. A cheesy story featuring an adorable puppy took first place.

The ad has been shared over 1.1 million times, making it a huge success for Budweiser. The idea is not particularly witty, but people really enjoy watching the puppy making friends with a horse. Loyal dog eyes, curious sniffing nose and clumsy little paws are simply perennial favorites.

Renzen: Key visual for stamp voting by Swiss Post

Renzen created the key visual for the current voting campaign for the «Swiss Skills Bern 2014» commemorative stamp, which is designed to encourage the public to vote. The challenge was to visually incorporate about a dozen very different professional associations in a way that made them easily recognizable.

From September 17 to 21, 2014, the Swiss Skills Championships will take place under the title "Swiss Skills Bern 2014". Over 50 professional associations and their talents are taking part. More than 1,000 young professionals from the skilled trades, industry and the service sector will be demonstrating their skills in around 130 professions. Reason enough for Swiss Post to issue a special stamp.

Eleven of the participating professional associations are also taking on a very special challenge: In numerous projects with young creatives, the associations have used their "skills" to design a stamp.

Only one of the 11 subjects will be published as a special stamp in September 2014. The public has a say and can vote online for their personal favorites until February 15, 2014. A jury will select the winning design from the three stamp designs with the most votes on February 27, 2014. Information about the stamp competition can be found at here.

Responsible at Post: Yvonne Wehrli (Head of Marketing Communications), Bettina Hufschmied (Marketing Communications Consultant), Isabel Lo Verso Pedersen (Product Manager Stamps and Philately). Responsible at Renzen: Achim Kaufmann (AD), Frédéric Renzen, Alain Götschi (consulting).

Bencic becomes brand ambassador for Cornèrcard

Belinda Bencic, the world's top-ranked junior tennis player, has already proven her talent on several occasions. The Cornèrcard brand ambassador team consists of Giulia Steingruber (gymnast), Fabian Cancellara (cyclist), Ariella Kaeslin (three-time Swiss Sportswoman of the Year), Nino Schurter (mountain bike world champion and Olympic silver medalist), Ilaria Käslin (gymnast) and the beach volleyball team Joana Heidrich and Nadine Zumkehr.

"I think it's great that Cornèrcard supports young athletes and I'm looking forward to working with them," the young athlete was quoted as saying in a press release on Tuesday.

Rundschau keeps ombudsman's office on its toes

The TV program Rundschau gave the SRG German-speaking Switzerland ombudsman's office the most work to do in 2013. The office received a total of 183 complaints last year - 33 (22%) more than in the previous year. Around an eighth of these were attributable to Rundschau.

No fewer than eleven complaints were received by the SRG German-speaking Switzerland ombudsman's office following the SRF television program "Rundschau" on the subject of "Foster children with strict believers". He judged the eleven complaints to be justified, said ombudsman Achille Casanova on Tuesday at the request of the news agency SDA. The program had described devout families who were committed to foster children as sectarian.

With almost a dozen complaints, the aforementioned Rundschau program was the most controversial in the entire reporting year. However, individual other broadcasts also resulted in several complaints. In view of this accumulation of individual broadcasts, the increase in the total number of complaints received cannot be interpreted as growing dissatisfaction on the part of the audience, the ombudsman writes in the 2013 annual report.

Over the course of the year, Rundschau attracted a total of 23 complaints - and thus the most. 18 complaints concerned the Tagesschau, nine criticized 10vor10 broadcasts. Kassensturz, on the other hand, which had 19 complaints in 2012, was only criticized once in the reporting year.

115 complaints treated

The ombudsman dealt with 115 complaints in accordance with the Radio and Television Act: 20 of these concerned radio broadcasts, 92 television broadcasts and three concerned both media. The most common complaint (42%) was "inappropriate or politically biased" reporting, while 20% of the submissions complained of defamation of a person, association or company.

The ombudsman's office forwarded eleven complaints to the Independent Complaints Authority UBI. For legal reasons, it did not take action on 64 submissions and sent them to the editorial offices concerned for a direct response. The ombudsman's office dealt with 20 complaints about teletext and online contributions on a voluntary basis, but rejected all of them, as the statement continues.

Election and voting broadcasts

Furthermore, at a meeting between the UBI and the ombudsman's offices of all radio and television broadcasters, the ombudsman suggested that the timing of the "hot phase" before elections and votes should be reconsidered. The general maxim is that the closer to the date of the ballot, "the more dominant the balance requirement is". In the last week, contributions must be "necessarily balanced". These dates seemed to him to be too short or at least too imprecise, the ombudsman writes in the annual report, as more and more voters are now voting by post very early on. (SDA)

New editorial management at Regionaljournal ZH/SH

Katrin Hug will become the new director of Radio SRF 1's Zurich-Schaffhausen Regional Journal. The 48-year-old will take over from Michael Hiller, who is retiring, at the beginning of May.

Katrin Hug, 48, will take over as head of the "Regionaljournal Zürich Schaffhausen" program, Swiss radio and television SRF announced Tuesday. She replaces Michael Hiller, who is retiring, on May 1, 2014.

After studying English and German at the University of Zurich, Katrin Hug first taught as a teacher before starting her journalistic career in 1995 at Radio Zürisee and later at Radio 24. In 2001, she moved from Zurich to Bern to join the domestic editorial team of Schweizer Radio DRS.

Just two years later, she was the Federal Parliament correspondent; for eight years she reported from the Federal Parliament, from elections and sessions, with analyses and assessments to moderating the presidential round on voting Sundays.

Reporting on the mass immigration initiative

The Argus Voting Report examines media coverage of the «Against Mass Immigration» popular initiative and highlights the extent to which the topic was covered across various media channels and cantons.

The upcoming vote on the popular initiative "Against Mass Immigration" on February 9, 2014 is stirring up emotions: In print media, online news and social media, there is intense writing and discussion about the arguments of proponents and opponents as well as the possible outcome of the vote.

Coverage in the print media

The print articles found in January alone would be enough to fill more than 4.1 million billboards (world format, 90×128 centimeters), which is equivalent to more than one billboard per private household in Switzerland.

This infographic from Argus visualizes media coverage from January 1 to 29, 2014 in print media, online news and social media in all three national languages. The color scheme shows per canton how intensive the potential contact of a regular print media user was. The percentage value per canton shows what proportion of the cantonal population was potentially reached with this coverage in the print media.

Annual report as a three-hour movie

In 2012/13, the F+F School released its annual report exclusively as a video posted on YouTube. Kreienbühl and Vogler came up with the idea. The agency also oversaw the entire production.

The result is an unadulterated view of the F+F school in Zurich. The principal himself walks through the corridors with a cell phone cam and visits the people who have helped shape the school year: Heads of studies, lecturers, but also students and pupils have their say.

The film, which lasts over three hours, is surprisingly entertaining, not least thanks to the comedian Beat Schlatter and the artist Andreas Dobler, who present the section "Und dann war da noch" as a performance between reading, concert and conversation.

The only printed material for the R+D Annual Report is a flyer with a link to the film. Otherwise, the R+D Annual Report 2012/13 is distributed exclusively with teaser films on social media platforms. You can download the R+D Annual Report 2012/13 here in its full length.

Responsible at F+F-Schule: Andreas Vogel (Rector), Sandi Paucic (Deputy Rector), Martina Huber (Head of Secretariat), Valérie Jetzer (Assistant Rectorate). Responsible at Kreienbühl and Vogler: Reto Vogler, Oli Kreienbühl, Marco Donada, Jan Indermühle, Fabian Schiltknecht; Film production: Ahmed Abdel Mohsen (Donkeyshot Filmproduction).
