Commission against ban on telephone advertising

This was announced by the parliamentary services on Thursday. The majority of the Commission believes that a ban would be disproportionate and would be almost impossible to monitor. The law on unfair competition already provides a means of taking action against unwanted advertising calls of all kinds. The National Council approved the proposal last fall. Maire had argued that the self-regulation of telephone advertising introduced by health insurers was not working. The calls had not noticeably decreased, so the federal government had to take action with a ban. (SDA)

Are male copywriters dying out?

In 2013, the federal professional examination for copywriters was held for the third time—and for the first time without a single candidate. Another first: all female candidates passed the exam.

A few men did attend the graduation ceremony, at least as companions of the excellent copywriters. In the kitschy and beautiful Café Schober in Zurich's Niederdorf district, Roger Hausmann, president of the examination board, and Heinz Egli, examination director, presented the 13 newly qualified copywriters with their certificates. Esther Dossenbach, who achieved the highest grade of 5.1, was presented with an engraved Faber-Castell fountain pen and a spring bouquet of flowers. After receiving their diplomas, the copywriters and their companions celebrated their graduation with a glass of wine, beer or mineral water and canapés. The examination board for the federal certificate Copywriter and copywriter thanks the sponsors "Marketing & Kommunikation" and Faber-Castell in a press release.

Update: Media portal realized for AZ Medien

Advertising professionals can now find all relevant media data for all AZ Medien Group newspapers at Azwerbung.ch. The cockpit for media professionals, which is also optimized for mobile devices, was created by the Zurich-based Internet and media agency Update.

Not everything has two sides. Sometimes just one is enough to get comprehensive information - for example about the opportunities for successful advertising in the newspapers of the "AZ Medien" Group. On Azwerbung.ch media professionals can find out everything they need to know about publication methods and dates, sections and page spreads, fixed and follow-up formats and advertising rates for the AZ network publications Die Nordwestschweiz, Schweiz am Sonntag, AZ Aargauer Zeitung, AZ Limmattaler Zeitung, AZ Solothurner Zeitung, AZ Grenchner Tagblatt, BZ Basel and BZ Basellandschaftliche Zeitung.

The information can be found via the individual publication titles as well as via section titles. Those who prefer to study the facts offline can copy them to their hard drive as PDF documents in the Download Center. However, ad planning is even faster with the new "Calculator": Here you can interactively select and compare advertisements in the various publications and categories. The result can be sent to you by e-mail - and optionally you can also send a request for a callback from the advertising department.

The new advertising site was realized by the Zurich Internet and media agency Update, which has been supporting AZ Medien for years in the conception and implementation of its Internet strategy. According to the press release, the free CMS "Typo3" is used as the technical basis, and Javascript and Ajax technologies are also used for the "Calculator". So that busy media professionals can also use the advertising portal on the move, it was created with state-of-the-art, responsive HTML5 programming, which means that the content is also optimally displayed on mobile devices.

Swisscom to double Internet speed

The federal government wants to strengthen consumer protection online: The price of a service ordered online must be displayed where the user must click to accept the offer. In addition, Swisscom is to be required to double its internet speeds.

In the universal service, the download rate is currently at least 1000 kbit/s, the upload rate 100 kbit/s. The new speed is to be 2000/200 kbit/s, for which Swisscom may charge a maximum of CHF 55 per month plus VAT, as before. Furthermore, telecommunications providers are no longer to be allowed to charge additional costs on top of the stated prices. One of the aims is to ensure that calls to 0800 numbers are actually free of charge, regardless of whether they are made from a cell phone or a fixed line.

Hearing opened

The Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) wants to define these new regulations with various amendments to the ordinance, for which the hearing was opened on Thursday. These include the fact that smaller providers of telecommunications services no longer have to register with Bakom under certain conditions.

A further draft revision concerns the ".ch" Internet domain. Until March 2015, the domain names of the country code domain will be marketed by the Switch foundation and simultaneously administered on behalf of Bakom. Internationally, the separation of the two functions has now become established. The mandate is therefore to be put out to tender again. The model is also to apply to the new generic domain ".swiss", for which the Confederation has applied and which is to be managed directly by Bakom. Applicants for domain names on ".swiss" must have a direct and special connection to Switzerland. Bakom cites umbrella organizations as an example. Companies can also apply for a ".swiss" domain, but they must be domiciled in Switzerland or have a special connection to Switzerland.

Imprint and Syndicom: charges against Ringier

After Tamedia, Ringier is now also facing action: Because the editorial staff’s working hours are not being tracked, Impressum and Syndicom have filed a complaint with the Zurich City Labor Inspectorate.

The complaint is intended to draw attention to the overwork of media workers, according to a joint statement issued by the two journalists' associations on Thursday. Ringier must review the situation together with the labor inspectorate that has been called in. Overtime is defined as hours worked in excess of the legal maximum of 45 hours per week. It is imperative that these hours be compensated. However, impressum and syndicom write that working hours need to be recorded in order to measure them. Technological development is constantly bringing new tasks and a faster pace of work. The media companies would also strive for more profitability and keep the number of employees as low as possible, they criticize.

Ringier regrets "counterproductive action".

The media company Ringier reacted with surprise to the timing of the ad. "We have always demonstrated a willingness to engage in dialog with impressum," Ringier spokesman Edi Estermann told the SDA news agency. He also said that an appointment with the responsible labor inspectorate had been arranged for some time. Ringier and the personnel commission are already looking for suitable solutions for the recording of working hours. According to the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco), employers also have until April 1 to take suitable measures in dialogue with employees, Estermann said. The journalists' associations criticize Ringier above all for the lack of a collective labor agreement (CLA) for German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino. The lack of a contract is the main reason for the problem. This will soon be the tenth time this has happened. The current cases show how urgent it is to negotiate a new CLA.

Despite years of effort and a number of constructive proposals from journalists, neither Ringier nor the publishers' association have so far been willing to seek a social partnership solution, the statement continues. For health protection, therefore, the only remaining option is the labor law, which requires the recording of working hours. The Ringier spokesman described the attempt by the journalists' associations to reactivate the stalled negotiations regarding the CLA in this way as counterproductive. "We regret that Ringier's constructive attitude is now being unilaterally terminated," he said.

Association of Swiss Media seeks advice from experts

The problem of overlong, illegal and unrecorded working hours exists not only at Ringier, but in the entire media industry, the journalists' associations write. A month ago, the associations filed the same complaint with the Labor Inspectorate against Tamedia. Working hours are also not recorded on the editorial staff of the Tages-Anzeiger. "The issue of recording working hours is on our minds," Hanspeter Lebrument, president of the Swiss Media Association, told SDA on Thursday. "At our next meeting in March, we will talk about it with experts from the field of human resources. We have to see if there is a need for action."

"The question is whether there is a solution to this problem for the entire industry," said Lebrument. But such a solution cannot be forced, he said. "We can only say what would be appropriate." He added that it was also important to know what journalists themselves would say about it. (SDA)

Viscom environmental cookbook for the graphic arts industry

About six years after the publication of the brochure «Environment and Sustainability,» Viscom revisited the topic and published the comprehensive—yet still very concise—work «Environmental Cookbook for the Graphic Arts Industry.».

In contrast to the first brochure, which only provided an overview of the individual topics, the "Environmental Cookbook for the Graphic Arts Industry" , with its numerous references, overviews and practical tips, aims to enable graphic arts companies to take the areas of environment and sustainability into their own hands.

The "Environmental Cookbook for the Graphic Arts Industry" is divided into five chapters: Environmentally Relevant Areas of a Print Shop, Paper, Energy Efficiency, Climate-Neutral Printing, Environmental Management Systems. Readers learn about all of today's environmental labels and how an FSC certification process must be set up in the company. After reading this, they will know where it makes the most sense to implement energy efficiency measures, as well as how to save a lot of money with optimized electricity procurement. In addition, graphic companies will be given important arguments to better sell themselves and their industry to customers in terms of environmental and sustainability issues. Did you know, for example, that the European forest is increasing by four times the area of London every year, or that an iPad as a teaching aid has a lower environmental impact than printed textbooks only after the sixtieth textbook?

The "Environmental Cookbook for the Graphic Arts Industry" is aimed at company owners, business managers, those responsible for the environment and sustainability, but also anyone in the industry who is interested in the subject. It is a compact standard work that has not previously existed in this form in Switzerland and, according to the press release, belongs in every graphic arts company.

SRG expands services for the hearing and visually impaired

In 2013, the SRG improved its services for people with hearing and visual impairments. Programs were provided with subtitles, translated into sign language, or supplemented with «audio description»—a continuous audio description of the film’s plot.

The law requires SRG to subtitle its TV channels for one third of the broadcasting time. Last year, this requirement was met and even slightly exceeded, according to a statement. SRG has also agreed to offer subtitled broadcasts on the Internet. The offer is to be implemented this year. In addition, news broadcasts were translated into sign language for the deaf in all three language regions. In German-speaking Switzerland, the main edition of the "Tagesschau" was translated daily into sign language and broadcast parallel to the program on SRF info. In addition, the speeches of the Federal Councillors and the program "Kassensturz" were broadcast. For the deaf in French-speaking Switzerland, the main edition of "19h30" was broadcast daily in parallel in sign language on RTS Deux. RSI's "Telegiornale flash" was translated daily into sign language.

The offer for the visually impaired has also been expanded, SRG writes further. German speakers in particular could have benefited from this. They had access to 101 programs with audio description. In French-speaking Switzerland, 45 films and in Ticino 24 films were broadcast with audio description. (SDA)

Last but not least: lucky

A camera falls out of an airplane and is eaten by a pig on the ground. The world is now one unique video recording richer.

Eight months after the recording, she found the camera in her pig enclosure, writes YouTube user Mia Munselle in the description of the video, which was clicked on over four million times within a few days. After viewing the images, it became clear that the cam fell out of the plane before the skydiver jumped and landed unscathed in the territory of a curious and, above all, hungry pig.

via Crackajack.com
Of course, at first glance the story smells a bit like a viral campaign. At second glance, the shot seems a little too "unstaged", the flight through the presumably fast-moving camera is far less spectacular than a layman would imagine (and wish for) and the 4:3 format is rather outdated for today's times. Moreover, the story is too implausible to be unbelievable. Subject to error, of course. It wouldn't be the first time...

And please excuse the title. The pun "Schwein gehabt" should actually be banned in connection with pigs, meat and gopros falling out of airplanes. (hae)

Starticket and ticket portal cooperate

The ticket distributor Starticket is entering into a partnership with Ticketportal in the B2C sales channel and will take over end-customer sales from Ticketportal for its Swiss event clients.

In the course of the cooperation, both parties will focus on their core competencies: according to the announcement, Starticket will strengthen its offering in the end-customer segment with attractive events from the areas of sports and culture, while Ticketportal will concentrate on further expanding its market leadership in its core business, the provision of flexible and individual B2B solutions.

Starticket, a 75 percent subsidiary of Tamedia, continues to execute all valid contracts with event organizers for end customer sales on behalf of Ticketportal and fully guarantees contract fulfillment. Thanks to this cooperation, ticketportal event organizers benefit from increased advertising presence in end customer sales in Tamedia's various media. In the B2B area, ticketportal customers can continue to count on Ticketportal's proven ticket solutions and services.

"Ticketportal's attractive events from the fields of sports and culture ideally complement Starticket's event portfolio," says Peter Hürlimann, CEO of Starticket. "This partnership, in which Starticket, the innovation leader in the end customer sector, and the leader in the B2B business ticketportal join forces, strengthens the market position of both companies in the highly competitive ticket market in Switzerland," says Dieter Froehlich, Chairman of the ticketportal Executive Board, with pleasure. The implementation of the cooperation is planned for the beginning of the second half of this year.
