Last but not least: flex your muscles

Old Spice enraptures with an interactive video in which you can flex Terry Crews' muscles.

With the help of Wieden+Kennedy, the long-established men's cosmetics manufacturer Old Spice has once again scored a marketing hit. Actor and ex-footballer Terry Crews makes instruments play with muscle movements. That alone is actually successful enough. But to top it off, the viewer gets to play the keys himself and create his own compositions with Terry's muscles. If required, these can be uploaded to Vimeo and distributed further. Radio Freiburg makes a profit again

The bilingual Radio Fribourg/Freiburg once again turned a profit last year. This will allow the company to set aside additional reserves for a planned media complex in Villars-sur-Glâne.

The station closed the 2015 financial year with a profit of CHF 60,038, as Radio Fribourg/Freiburg announced on Wednesday. This is the sixth profit in a row. In previous years, the company was able to build up provisions amounting to 1.25 million francs. This means that the financing of the new premises in the Mediaparc in Villars-sur-Glâne is practically secured, the station writes in its press release. In the Mediaparc, Radio Fribourg/Freiburg plans to share space with the Fribourg studio of La Télé Vaud-Fribourg TV and the internet magazine Sept.Info. The planning work is well advanced. The project will soon be put out to public tender.

With the result achieved in 2015, the station can enter a profit carried forward of 362,110 francs in its balance sheet. A sum that could prove to be very helpful in offsetting any market fluctuations in the coming months, as the managers of Radio Fribourg/Freiburg continue to write. Cost management remains a top priority. Caution is also required for the current financial year, the radio managers warn. For the time being, the figures for the first few months do not yet confirm the positive trend of the previous year. Radio Fribourg/Freiburg has been on air since 1988 with a German and a French program. According to its own figures, the station generates a turnover of over eight million francs and has around 155,200 regular listeners. (SDA)

Tamedia: Sales and profit increased despite stagnating advertising revenues

Tamedia increased sales and profits in the first half of 2010 despite stagnating advertising revenues. The company benefited above all from newly acquired media and cost-cutting measures.

Sales rose slightly by 2.4 percent year-on-year to 386.4 million francs, as the Zurich-based media company announced on Wednesday. This growth was due in particular to newly acquired media such as Search.ch, Zürcher Unterländer and Zürichsee-Zeitung. In contrast, the Berner Zeitung and Tages-Anzeiger once again recorded a decline in sales. The development of the Berner Tageszeitng Bund, which broke even for the first time in more than a decade, was pleasing for Tamedia.
The operating result before depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) climbed by 154.4 percent to CHF 66.1 million thanks to the cost-cutting measures taken in the previous year, according to the press release. Operating profit at EBIT level (before interest and taxes) rose from CHF 9.1 million to CHF 48.8 million.
The result from continuing operations amounted to CHF 49.9 million, compared to CHF 5.7 million in the previous year. The newly acquired 49.9% stake in Presse Publications SR, which comprises the main Swiss media activities of the French-speaking Swiss media group Edipresse, contributed CHF 10.8 million to the result. In particular, the activities of Thurgauer Zeitung, which was sold to the NZZ media group in mid-April 2010, are not included in the continuing operations. The overall result including discontinued operations amounted to CHF 52.5 million, compared to CHF 0.8 million in the previous year.
Advertising investments, which had fallen continuously since June 2008, stabilized at a significantly lower level in the first half of 2010. Some months in the first half of the year saw a year-on-year increase in advertising investment. Job advertisements, which react with a delay to an upturn in the labor market, recorded a further decline of -8.8%. The total advertising revenues of the Swiss press in the first half of the year were just above the previous year's figure at plus 0.4 per cent, but at -18.5 per cent still significantly below the first half of 2008. Tamedia expects advertising investments to remain largely stable in the coming months.

Increased sales in the Newspapers, Magazines and Electronic Media divisions
Sales in the Newspapers division rose by 0.4 percent to CHF 255.0 million. This growth is attributable in particular to the titles Zürcher Unterländer and Zürichsee-Zeitung, which were included for two months for the first time, as well as 20 Minuten and Sonntagszeitung.
Sales in the Magazines division increased by 0.6 percent to CHF 48.7 million. In addition to Schweizer Familie and the specialist media Mobil, the people magazine 20 Minuten Friday, which was launched at the end of 2008, also made a positive contribution to sales. Annabelle and TVtäglich, on the other hand, reported a decline in sales.
Sales in the electronic media business division rose by 25.7 percent to CHF 52.8 million. This growth is exclusively attributable to online media. In addition to the online platforms Search.ch, Jobup.ch and Swissfriends.ch, which were included for the first time, 20 Minuten online and the Newsnetz also contributed to growth, while the real estate platform Homegate continued to develop positively. Radio and TV activities fell short of expectations and made no contribution to earnings.
Services with less turnover
At CHF 99.4 million, sales in the Services business division in the first six months of the year were 18.4 percent below the previous year's figure of CHF 119.3 million. For the first time, sales from the DZO Druck Oetwil printing center, where the Zurich regional newspapers are printed, were also included in the Services division. However, the once again lower volumes in newspaper printing led to a significant decline in sales both in the printing centers and in prepress.
Presse Publications SR S.A., which comprises the main Swiss media activities of Edipresse, met the high expectations in the first half of 2010. With sales of CHF 176.7 million, PPsr generated an operating result after depreciation and amortization of CHF 24.8 million. The EBIT margin was thus 14.0 percent. The jointly operated commuter newspaper 20 minutes and the online marketplaces, which have also already been merged, performed particularly well. As Tamedia only held a minority stake of 49.9 per cent in PPSR S.A. until the beginning of 2010, its revenues are not included in Tamedia's half-year financial statements. However, in line with the 49.9 percent stake, around half of the net profit of CHF 21.6 million (CHF 10.8 million) was included in Tamedia's result.
Focus on the future of Zurich's regional newspapers
In addition to the merger with the Swiss media activities of Edipresse, the future of the Zurich regional newspapers will be the focus of attention for Tamedia in the coming months. Together with the partners Ziegler Druck und Verlags AG (Der Landbote) and Zürcher Oberland Medien AG (Zürcher Oberländer), possible cooperations are currently being examined. The partners have decided to run their advertising business jointly from 2010. Further projects are to be completed by the end of 2010.

Joiz Switzerland closes - 75 employees affected

It's the end of the road for the Swiss youth television channel Joiz. Due to excessive debt, the board of directors has filed the financial statements of the two Swiss companies, Joiz Schweiz and Joiz IP, with the Zurich bankruptcy court. The closure affects 75 employees.

joizlogo
Joiz CEO and co-founder Alexander Mazzara and the management of Joiz IP were looking for solutions to continue the operation and sale of the Joiz Global digital platform, the broadcaster announced Monday evening. The platform has been successfully licensed to Germany, the Netherlands, Russia and the U.S. in recent months. The German offshoot of the youth channel will continue. For Joiz Germany the offer of a new majority shareholder is present, which wants to continue the transmission enterprise. As the deal is not yet ready to be finalized, Joiz is not yet disclosing the source of the offer. The German broadcast signal will now also be broadcast in Switzerland. According to the information, 75 employees are affected by the closure in Switzerland, sharing 57 full-time positions. They are employed in the TV station Joiz Switzerland and in the marketing company of Joiz IP. For some of the employees, there is hope that they will be hired elsewhere. The video team of Ringier Publishing and Blick WebTV have already expressed interest. Initial talks about possible commitments have already taken place.

Takeover talks fail

The decision to discontinue the activity in Switzerland was difficult for the board of directors, according to reports. "Joiz was at the forefront of interactive, multimedia communication and developed many new products with its very dedicated employees," the board's chairman, Gaudenz Trapp, is quoted as saying in the statement. But the new round of financing, which would have been necessary to further develop the company, did not materialize. "Talks with Swiss media houses about a possible takeover of Joiz Switzerland were not successful," Trapp said. Editorial operations are expected to cease in the coming days, spokesman Jürg Wildberger said on request. However, that decision will be up to the bankruptcy trustee appointed by the Zurich bankruptcy court. Joiz was founded in Zurich in 2011. The company currently operates two HD TV channels in Switzerland and Germany. These produce "interactive, cross-media entertainment programs for a young generation," according to the statement. In particular, Joiz combined classic television with online content, such as on social media. (SDA)

Last but not least: Walkable dreams

Children's drawings meet VR technology. The result: beaming faces and a successful campaign.

virtualreality
And it comes from Switzerland. The Zurich-based virtual reality content studio Bandara has implemented a VR campaign for the real estate portal Homegate.ch that is not only worth seeing, but also worth walking through. The concept is relatively simple: children draw their dream houses, the experts from Bandara implement them - and the children put on VR goggles. The privilege of being able to walk around in their own drawings was unfortunately denied to our generations - virtual imagination had to suffice. (hae)

20 Minuten launches tablet app

One year after its launch, the 20 Minuten mobile app is now also available on tablets.

20minapp

Tablet users can now navigate through the four so-called views. The Classicview is the classic view that contains news and stories of the day created by the 20 Minutes editorial team. The Socialview shows content curated by the user community. In the Personalview, users have the option to fully personalize the app and, for example, create their own news feed, while the PlayView invites further lingering and engagement with quizzes, games, live TV, and other offerings.

"With the new tablet app, we want to build on the success story of our revolutionary mobile app and further expand our number one position," Marco Boselli, editor-in-chief of 20 Minuten, said in a statement Monday. "In addition, we want to further increase the interaction between users and steadily grow our community." In addition to the app's user functions, new and user-friendly advertising formats have also been developed. This further development pursues a multi-screen strategy in order to market advertising formats in the future that work on the tablet as well as on the desktop or smartphone.

Mediabrands: NZZ most credible

The Neue Zürcher Zeitung is the most credible media brand in German-speaking Switzerland. It narrowly edges out Radio SRF 1. In this year’s Mediabrands study, Publicom examined over 100 media brands to assess their qualitative appeal to the audience.

nzz_14

Since 2013, Publicom has been investigating the qualitative assessment of media brands in Switzerland as part of the Mediabrands study. For the current study, over 4'800 people were asked how they qualitatively assess the media they consume. This results in a differentiated brand profile for each of the media brands studied.

In view of the digital flood of information and increasing media blunders, the credibility of a media brand is of great importance in both the audience and advertising markets. In German-speaking Switzerland, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung received the best marks in terms of credibility. It has even improved somewhat compared to the previous year. It is closely followed by Radio SRF 1, with respondents also giving high credibility ratings to NZZ am Sonntag and SRF 1 (TV). Some regional media brands are also held in high esteem by their audiences. The Berner Bund and Zentralschweiz am Sonntag, for example, but also the small local radio station Radio BeO, are considered particularly credible.

Amazing development of Watson

Even when overall qualitative performance (brand strength) is considered, the SRF and NZZ brands share the top spots ahead of the Tage-Anzeiger, as in the previous year. An astonishing development is being experienced by the online portal watson, which has continuously increased its brand image in recent years and this year has made the leap into the top ten strongest media brands in German-speaking Switzerland. With its infotainment mix, Watson manages the balancing act between serious information and palatable entertainment, especially with a young mobile audience.

The rising star of the year among regional media brands is Bernese Oberland's Radio BeO, which immediately took first place among the ten strongest regional media brands. Its local roots are reflected in the high esteem in which it is held by the audience. Zentralschweiz am Sonntag also made strong gains, significantly sharpening its brand profile. In the Zurich area, Planet 105 is experiencing a marked upswing. The youth radio station is winning over audiences much more strongly than in the previous year.

Digital use of media brands increases strongly

In addition to the qualitative impact of media brands, Mediabrands also examines their use. This shows that digital use via the Internet and smartphones is becoming increasingly important. Almost three quarters of German-speaking Swiss now use mobile Internet. However, this does not mean that traditional use is being displaced by digital use. Rather, the various channels are being combined. For daily newspaper brands, complementary use, i.e. print and digital, is already standard. More than half of the German-speaking Swiss now also use newspaper brands on their smartphones. A generational change is nevertheless emerging: For the under-30s, traditional (analog) media are of little importance; much more important to them than newspapers, radio, and TV are social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

Mediabrands is conducted annually by the media consultancy Publicom. The study provides media companies with the basis for successful brand management and creates transparency for advertisers and media agencies about the qualitative communications performance of the most important Swiss media brands.
