The Marengo PR agency organizes game shows for the Coop Supercard

The PR agency Marengo is organizing game shows for the Coop SupercardIf you want to watch chariot races, you can either rent "Ben Hur" from the video store or visit the Swiss Coop shopping centers this summer. To mark the launch of the Coop Supercard, PR agency Marengo is organizing game events that are all about one thing: shopping until the shopping cart tips over.Coop Supergames will be held at thirty locations throughout Switzerland from the beginning of June to the end of September. The aim of the events is to introduce consumers to the benefits of the Coop Supercard in a fun way.
The game principle is simple: armed with oversized shopping trolleys, the competitors race through an obstacle-filled course and cram as many items as possible into their vehicles. Points are awarded for each item collected. However, only racers who know how to master hazards such as wobbly plastic mats can get hold of particularly valuable consumer goods.
"The Coop Supercard rewards loyal customers with rewards," explains Benedikt Pachlatko, Head of Supercard at Coop Switzerland. The card is a long-term project designed to promote customer loyalty and increase sales.
After the first events, both Pachlatko and the Marengo staff are satisfied with the success of the public. "The game appeals to all age groups," reports Alex Beeler, who developed the game concept at Marengo. Even 60-year-olds take part in the shopping battles.
Let's hope that the fired-up Coop customers will get used to the usual traffic rules between the shelves again in their daily shopping. Bruno Amstutz

Have Swiss advertisers become overconfident or are they really that creative?

Have Swiss advertisers become overconfident or are they really that creative? 399 Swiss entries are vying for a place in the top international advertising league at Cannes. In the film category, there are 100 percent more entries than in 1999, and 68 percent more in the "Press & Poster" category. Which works are in the running, and which could make it? The Oracle talks about this on pages 18 to 27 and 49.

Publicis profiles networked mobility under the Zürcher Verkehrsverbund brand

Publicis profiles networked mobility under the Zürcher Verkehrsverbund brandBy Luca Aloisi Over the past ten years, 40 independent partner companies have woven a finely woven network under the umbrella of the Zürcher Verkehrsverbund (ZVV). In order to profile the new ZVV personality, a multi-year image campaign is being launched these days, which was conceived by Publicis and uses upside-down appearances to promote the right transport.
Multifunctional - the favorite attribute of kitchen appliance manufacturers and the 90s celebrates its reign in the amusingly twisted Publicis image campaign for the ZVV. In order to impressively communicate the outstanding competence - networked mobility with one ticket - the Publicis team around CD Jean Etienne Aebi implemented the advantages of the association in an irritatingly eye-catching way and semantically transformed the streetcar into a seaworthy or the Lake Zurich ship into a roadworthy means of transport.
Excellent mobility with market potential
Success on the market - passenger numbers have risen by around a third since 1990 - and the international accolade from the World Expo 2000 in Hanover prove that public transport in the Zurich area has become more attractive.
However, apart from the market launch at that time, the benefits of convenience and time savings in travel have not been advertised in a targeted manner, says Caspar Sträuli, Head of Marketing ZVV. The direct consequence is a partially untapped market potential. This was also confirmed by a population survey in the summer of 1999.
The conclusion of the study is that substantial revenue growth requires the development of an emotionally charged quality brand. The ZVV seized this opportunity with the development of a new mission statement, which is intended to shape the image by conveying the core values "responsible, networked and binding". In a first step, the new logo was introduced on all vehicles of the partner companies, which thus appear in the style of a trademark.
A streetcar is also a ship and a train is also a streetcar
To ensure that this quality brand is associated with the core benefits in the wider population, the awareness and image of the ZVV are to be markedly improved. The goal of the profiling is to increase annual sales by ten million francs. The 2.4 million Swiss franc pitch for the three-year campaign was won at the end of last year by the Zurich advertising agency Publicis. The client justifies its decision with the way the message is brought to the point and the sophisticated use of the means of transport for advertising purposes.
The idea and concept of the campaign actually build on a multiplier effect that is only possible for and with the harmonized and networked mobility concept of the ZVV. For some days now, streetcars have been running with the inscription "I am also a ship" or train locomotives claiming that they are also buses. This message is always resolved with the line "One ticket for everything", the ZVV brand logo and the slogan "Richtig verkehrt".
Posters and advertisements follow suit with an identical appearance. Information stickers crown the upside-down world of transportation in Zurich: On buses, they point out the life jacket under the seat. On the other hand, "Lights switch on automatically when passing through tunnels," will appear on ships' toilets.

The big ones are now knocking on the door of the small ones

The Basler Mediengruppe, Berner Tagblatt Medien, and the Zürich Express (ZE) are considering applying for membership in the Association of Swiss Free Newspapers (VSGZ) for their free publications.

The Basler Mediengruppe, Berner Tagblatt Medien and Zürich Express (ZE) are considering applying for membership of the Association of Swiss Free Newspapers (VSGZ) for their free titles.Talks to this effect are underway, as ZE publishing director Heinz Krebs told WerbeWoche. The aim is to create a joint Internet advertising platform. This online package is to be offered to one or more strong online providers for placement. Conversely, the big free titles expect VSGZ to create a separate class for them within the association.
VSGZ President Willy Grüninger confirmed this when asked. He himself thinks an expansion of the VSGZ is necessary, but there are members who are panic-stricken by large publishers. If, however, the membership of the big three - with a first and a second VSGZ league if necessary - did not materialize, they would probably found a second association, Grüninger said.
The publishing houses of the three free titles have so far treated the VSGZ with a certain amount of disdain. The most recent example is the industry solution dictated by PrintOnline for digital ad delivery. VSGZ membership of the three is also explosive because VSGZ is now considering setting up a favorable competitor to PrintOnline (see page 35). (mk)

105 has caught the virus

105 already the fourth strongest radio station in the youth target group

105 already the fourth strongest radio station in the youth target groupTwo and a half years after its launch, Radio 105 has risen to become the fourth strongest private radio station in German-speaking Switzerland among 15 to 29-year-olds, while its competitor Virus is still far behind in its search for a young audience. This is shown by the SRG media study for the first quarter of 2000, in which both youth radio stations have now been surveyed for the first time. Launched in December 1997, 105 reached a general audience of 7.7 percent in the target group in the first quarter of 2000. This puts the youth station in fourth place among the private radio stations in German-speaking Switzerland, despite the handicap of exclusive distribution via cable. Only Radios 24, Z and Argovia reach a larger proportion of 15 to 29-year-olds in their reception areas.
The competitor Virus, which was launched two years later, can only dream of such figures. According to a reliable source, the station reached "only" 1.6 percent of its target group in the first quarter of 2000. Swiss Radio DRS, which operates Virus, would have preferred to keep this figure under wraps. "Because when it comes to sponsorship or bartering contracts, only the current performance counts and not the potential in the future," says DRS media officer Heinrich Anker.
Last November, Virus started no more and no less successfully than 105, which also had a general audience of 1.6 percent in the second quarter of its existence. However, after a still very leisurely upward trend in 1998, things then took bigger steps forward for 105 in 1999. Since the beginning of 1999, the station has almost doubled its share from 3.9 to 7.7 percent. Whether this acceleration in audience growth will also be successful for Virus remains to be seen. However, media officer Heinrich Anker is optimistic and takes Virus' well-frequented website - over 70,000 site visits in April - as an indication of the station's increasing popularity. Cannes 2000

"The level of Swiss TV commercials is rising year by year".

"The standard of Swiss TV commercials is rising year by year "Nine Swiss advertisers look at the Swiss TV commercial production submitted to Cannes and comment on the opportunities and disadvantages of Swiss film production and the trends in international comparisonFive questions for the Cannes experts1) What are your favorites among the Swiss submissions?
2) How do you rate this year's level of Swiss advertising film production in comparison with other countries?3) Why, despite this, are many and, above all, mostly more expensive spots still being outsourced from Switzerland to other countries for production?
4) Which general international spot in particular has made a lasting impression on you and why?5) How much trust do you have in a fair assessment by the jury in Cannes?
Edi Andrist, McCann-Erickson, Zurich1. Alcoholics Anonymous and SBB-Halbtax.
2. Swiss spots are often too shadowy and a bit too naively conceived. But there are always outstanding performances.
3. because there are no limits in the artistic field.
4. Motorola Subway, because it
dramatizes the one-handed operation of the cell phone in a surprising way.
5. This is the best possible jury. But it is also political, of course, and it can be wrong.
Hans G. Syz, Turnus Film, Gutenswil

1. Panasonic and Alcoholics Anonymous.
2. the Swiss submissions are quite respectable - both in terms of the way they are made and their content.
I would also like to know that. It is certainly the case that the creative offer is greater abroad.
4. many.
5. it depends on the composition. In general, it is already o. k.!
Martin Spillmann, Advico Young & Rubicam, Gockhausen

1. my favorites this year are: the spot with the Swiss flag turning in the wind after the EU flag, for the Tages-Anzeiger. The kind of spot that always has a chance at Cannes thanks to intelligent wit and absolute reduction to the essentials. The Swica spot with the naked old lovers, not because it is particularly well done, but because it breaks a taboo. The spot with the milk cow on the moon, because it is the funny continuation of a campaign that has become a classic over the years. Besides that, there are certainly some spots that are good for a surprise, like the one where people forget everything, I think they're advertising for a travel agency.
2 The standard of Swiss productions is rising from year to year. But so is the standard abroad. Visually, the spots have become increasingly attractive over the last few years. Be it through elaborate styling, countless cuts or sophisticated grading. So attractive, in fact, that they sometimes belie a lack of ideas. Time to invest more time in the creation of ideas and their subtle implementation. This is the only way to broaden the top of outstanding spots.
3 In the sign of the opening to Europe, we should get used to the fact that productions from Switzerland are awarded abroad. But we should also get used to Swiss filmmakers gaining experience abroad. And who knows, maybe productions from abroad will also be awarded to Switzerland.
4. at the Clios I saw a spot showing a happy couple coming back from vacation and not recognizing their eagerly waiting children. As a family man, I was pretty upset by this commercial.
5. at least as much trust as in the ADC jurors.
Frank Bodin, McCann-Erickson, Geneva1. As a decent Cannes juror, it would be indecent to say anything about this. And as a decent ADC member, it would be indecent to have a different opinion than the ADC film jury.
2. a Bordeaux; however, vintage 1997.
3. counter question: Which Swiss spends his vacations in Switzerland?
4th Litany for The Independent. Why? Because I'm just jealous of the simple idea.
5. more than into this year's ADC film jury.
Martin Denneke, Lowe|GGK, Zurich

1. I don't think it will be enough for a lion in the film category this year.
2 We produced a whole series of good commercials in Switzerland in 1999. But very few spectacular ones. And Cannes is not only about good advertising, but also about show. In this respect, we lack high-flyers.
3 The top of Swiss film production can also hold its own in an international comparison. So it's normal to produce abroad from time to time. It's no different for photographers and illustrators. It's clear that more expensive spots in particular are produced abroad. With little money, you get even less in England, for example, than you do here. And the best people on an international level won't lift a finger for a medium-sized Swiss budget.
4. last year's Grand Prix winner was also my absolute favorite. Not because it came from our sister agency Lowe in London, but because for once humor didn't win the race: The spot for The Independent is simply intelligent and outstandingly produced to boot.
I have full confidence up to bronze. From silver on, it becomes more political...
Stefan Fraefel,Wirz + Fraefel Productions, Zurich

1. some of us, Concert Diax, SwissLotto, Police control, Swisscom...
2. as always: we also have highlights.
3. we also ask ourselves again and again!
4th Audi Wakeboarder. For me from A to Z super.
5. in the last years I did not find some of my favorites in the shortlist. But it had a majority of good spots in the front ranks. Therefore o. k.
Jean-Etienne Aebi, Publicis Zurich1. The Lovely Milk Cow on the Moon. And (not yet available at the time of ADC judging) the Swisscom SMS chat in the disco.
2 Unchanged. Modest in terms of quantity and production effort compared with the rest of the world - but still not without a chance in terms of quality in creative reduction.
3. our decision is never for Switzerland or for abroad; instead always for the specific best crew.
4. still last year's Grand Prix The Independent - because among all the trends and counter-trends the most sustainable: no fun and games but relevant and touching.
5. it is never fair. But among the selected films, you'll always find the majority of the very best.
Markus Ruf, freelance concept designer, Zurich

1. the dairy cow spot "Moon landing" and the Kuoni spots "Holidays where you forget everything" by Advico Young & Rubicam. As well as the new spot for Alcoholics Anonymous by McCann-Erickson, in which not only the driver, but also the policeman who checks him, slurs drunkenly. Because the alcohol problem can affect anyone.
2. depends on which foreign country you compare it with. Compared to England, not so great, compared to Austria, excellent. All in all, however, it's not great, as we've already seen in other juries.
3. sometimes because the technical possibilities abroad are supposed to be even better. Sometimes because the choice of good actors is demonstrably greater. And sometimes simply because the agency wants to protect itself from the client - especially in the case of complex productions - by putting an international star director in charge.
4. the Cinemaxx spot by Jung von Matt. It shows a guy drilling a hole in the wall at home to hang a picture. Overlay: "57% of all fatal accidents happen at home." Now, of course, you expect him to hit a power line right away. But he doesn't. Instead, it drills through the head of the man sitting comfortably in the TV chair against the wall in the apartment next door. Fade-in: "It's better if you're not there. Cinemaxx. The movie palace." A new and rather amazing way to advertise a movie theater center, and stylistically very interesting to boot.
5. when you submit work to a festival, you have to accept the jury. And that's easier in Cannes than in the "Golden Coupon" or the "Grand Prix of Small Advertisements" because there are really top-class people on it.
Hanspeter Schweizer, Wirz Advertising Consulting

1. the Kuoni films have a good chance: an idea that will be understood in Cannes because it is Esperanto humor.
2. foreign countries are still a few lengths ahead of us.
3. in the hope of making up for the half or full nose length.
4. Budweiser "Wazzzuo!" and "Wasabi" from DDB, Chicago, because they hit the (American) Bud consumption milieu with millimeter precision.
5. as much as every year. At best, it is only shaken afterwards, when the awards are given.

Record year thanks to economic boomA lot of work, a lot of work, awaits the jurors of the International Advertising Festival (IAF) on the Côte d'Azur this year. Over 16,000 entries from all over the world were counted in the four categories Film, Press & Poster, Cyber and Media.
Compared with the previous year, this represents an increase of more than 24 percent in the number of entries. According to the IAF, this is due to the improved economic situation in most industrialized countries and the unbroken boom in dot-coms. The date change in 2000 has also triggered a flood of advertising activity. Finally, it is also important to report a new record number of participants: The number of representatives from the advertising industry who registered for Cannes rose by over 15 percent to more than 9,000 visitors.
Measured against the record international submissions, the number of Swiss works represented at Cannes is also at a new high. In figures, this means Press & Poster 255, Film 120, Cyber Lions 15 and, in the Media Lions, 9 entries, an award given for innovative media strategies. In 1999, Swiss advertisers sent in 232 entries in the four categories. For this year, this represents an increase of over 70 percent.

The lion tamer from BrazilMarcello Serpa is jury president in the Film and Press & Poster categories. He himself has already won 31 Lions and a Grand Prix in Cannes. Now he is the first South American to chair the jury at Cannes.
The 38-year-old co-owner and creative director of Almap BBDO, Sao Paulo, is one of Brazil's most respected creatives. Winner of many international competitions, Serpa lived in Germany for seven years, where he studied graphic design. He began his career at GGK before moving to RG Wiesmeier in Munich.
Back in Brazil, he stopped off at DPZ and DM9 before joining Almap in 1993. This company is one of the world's most creative agencies. In Brazil, Almap is regarded as a true creative hotbed. With 165 employees and a cross income of
51 million, Almap BBDO is the tenth largest agency in Brazil.
Serpa thinks advertising is good when it "pulls the consumer out of the lethargy of boring advertising," as he put it in an interview. For him, the emotional and content side has to be right for that. "A funny commercial without a clear message behind it is just a gag, but not advertising," he says. For Serpa, it works ideally when "first a joke or an unusual idea catches the viewer's attention. And then when his pupil is dilated a millimeter or two, you go in through that opening and convey the information."
Of the winning examples in Cannes, the jury president believes that they "stand as examples of good advertising" and thus naturally set the trends.

Head of the week: "I always think holistically".

As Head of Consulting at Guye & Partner, Philip Meier brings new perspectives to the firm

Philip Meier brings new perspectives as Head of Consulting at Guye & PartnerHead of the Week "I always think holistically "For three months now, the Zurich advertising agency Guye & Partner has employed a Head of Consulting: Philip Meier. The 30-year-old is responsible for structural development and improvement.
Meier understands this to mean the implementation of certain instruments that simplify processes. And not bureaucratization, because that would be the death of creative advertising. Other areas of activity include new business and strategic consulting. "At Guye & Partner, the omens are 'go,'" says the newcomer.
Actually, Meier, who completed his dissertation at the beginning of the year, wanted to take it easy and not take on a managerial position. Today he is happy, a headhunter made him curious. It was a very happy match right from the start, he immediately found a good contact with Christophe Guye and Danielle Lanz, he says and continues: "An agency that demands such high quality in advertising agrees with me. I would have been stupid not to accept the offer."
For the Licentiatus philosophiae, who studied German and history at the University of Zurich, there were originally three possible career fields: journalism, advertising or film. Meier entered advertising a good four years ago at Advico Young & Rubicam: "Because I knew that you can get ahead quickly in this industry if you know something about the subject and can think in a structured way."
Moreover, Philip Meier was "pre-exposed": Both his licentiate and doctoral theses were in the field of communication, or more precisely, internal corporate communication. Meier analyzed the processes of internal communication structures on the one hand in theoretical treatise, and on the other hand in the context of empirical studies he conducted at City Bank.
This background, says Philip Meier, has a very strong impact on his day-to-day communications work: "A task can go as far as portfolio analysis. I always think very holistically." Although the amateur saxophonist often engaged in scientific work, he never lost touch with reality.
"Advertising in particular should remain the starting point for good communication," says he, who grew up not far from the Guye & Partner agency in Zurich's Seefeld district and is not an outspoken "advertising cake person." Like-minded former schoolmates who have gone through similar career developments in other professions, who have become architects, physicists and financial analysts, form his private circle of acquaintances. Contacts that almost bring him more, because he can talk openly about problems and joys. Who knows whether one or the other school friend or fellow student might one day need an advertising agency.

Slim is in

The bag of tricks with which print ads vie for attention has been enriched by one more attraction:

The bag of tricks used by print advertisers to attract attention has been enriched by a new attraction: Slimline, the new offering from the Berner Zeitung (BZ), focuses on the order-loving reader, who immediately notices anything out of line. In this case, it is two pages folded lengthwise and loosely enclosed with the newspaper. But what attracts additional attention from the public is basically a technically complex undertaking that quickly reaches its limits. According to Beni Hofer, who is responsible for slimline at BZ, only thin numbers with a maximum of 52 pages can be considered, otherwise the technology is no longer compatible. And it has to be a client who is used to using a big ladle. If you opt for slimline, you have to book four full pages of advertising. The price for
the teasing ad idea: the rates of the four individual pages added together plus ten percent of the total amount. (dse)

Price monitoring relieves PO

Free Newspaper Association Considers Launching a Competitive Offering

Association of free newspapers considers setting up a competing offerBy Markus Knöpfli According to the price watchdog, PrintOnline's (PO) prices for digital ad delivery are not abusive. But the Association of Swiss Free Newspapers (VSGZ) does not agree. It is considering setting up a second transmission company.
In its statement of May 18, the Price Monitoring Department (PW) stated that it could "currently find no indications of abusive pricing in the charges levied by PrintOnline". However, it would continue to monitor the market and review the charges at a later date, it added.
This verdict undoubtedly exonerates PrintOnline (PO). However, this is still no reason to rejoice, as PW qualified its statement with the addition of the words "currently". In addition, it stated at the outset that it too assumed "that PO has a dominant position in the market for the digital transmission of print originals." This statement had previously been made by the secretariat of the Competition Commission (Weko).
The reaction at the PO, in which Ringier, TA-Media, NZZ and Publicitas each hold a 25 percent stake, is cautious. "We welcome the conclusion that PrintOnline's prices are not abusive. However, the assumption that PO has market power is not correct," says PO Managing Director Kurt Obrist. He does not want to comment further on the PW statement. For PO, the issue is closed and it's back to business as usual.
Free newspapers dissatisfied with PW opinion
The VSGZ, however, is not satisfied. Last year, the VSGZ appealed to the PW and the Weko against PrintOnline (WW 2/00). They will not give up yet, said VSGZ President Willy Grüninger, and further legal steps are under consideration. Above all, however, VSGZ is considering setting up a competitor to PO. A competitor's offer for the digital transmission of advertisements has already been obtained, and it turned out to be more favorable than PO's offer.
However, Grüninger did not accept the argument that two intermediaries could complicate the placement of ads and that the VSGZ would thus do a disservice to print as a whole. Media planners are also likely to have a certain interest if there are two competing intermediaries on the market, he said.
In its complaint to the Competition Commission and the Price Monitoring Authority last year, the VSGZ had claimed that PrintOnline represented a quasi-monopoly in the digital transmission of artwork and that PrintOnline prices were not transparent. In addition, it was up to the advertisers and not the publishers to bear the costs for the (digital) transmission of advertisements.
However, PW did not address this last point, and even credits PrintOnline with offering two different tariffs that publishers could choose between: A (relatively expensive) rate based on individual orders and a (cheaper for large volumes) rate with a fixed connection fee. A breakdown of costs shows that customers with the first tariff do not cover PO's costs with their fees.
Price supervisor for circulation-based tariffs
Conversely, PW also says it pointed out to PO that there could be "massive price differences" in the two tariffs, depending on volume. It therefore proposed a circulation-based tariff structure, which PO rejected. Legally, it was "not possible to force PO to make this tariff structure change," PW wrote.
