Copyright infringements cost minors dearly

The music industry is cracking down harder and harder in the fight against downloads of copyrighted content from the Internet. Minors are also being targeted. They, too, are liable for copyright infringements on the Internet.

The music industry is getting tougher in the fight against downloads of protected content from the Internet. Minors are also being targeted. They are also liable for copyright infringements on the Internet. This was the result of a recently published decision by the Higher Regional Court of Hamburg on September 13, 2006: a 15-year-old girl had downloaded pictures of the singer Jeanette Biedermann via an online file-sharing platform and sold them on eBay. She was warned by the owner of the rights to the images for a fee.
"This decision has caused a stir because nothing similar has ever been seen before," lawyer Arndt Joachim Nagel told Pressetext.ch. Now the music industry is also following suit and is increasingly commissioning law firms to hunt down juvenile copyright infringers.
The costs of a copyright infringement can quickly add up to several thousand euros. According to Nagel, the proceedings probably cost the 15-year-old image seller around 3000 euros.
Copyright infringements in the private sphere, such as downloading a few photos or pieces of music for private purposes, are still mostly unproblematic. However, anyone who enriches themselves through sales must also expect legal action at a young age.

Net-Metrix, the newly founded Internet research company, has published the Net-Metrix Audit web statistics for May 2007. The first five places are held by Bluewin, Search.ch, Blick Online, NZZ Online and 20minuten.ch. The ranking for these sites is identical for unique clients and visits. A visit is a visit to a website that is not interrupted for more than 30 minutes. Unique clients are the number of different computers from which a particular website is accessed.
Among the top 20 most-visited websites, however, these values produce quite different results: Although Partyguide does not make it into the top 20 in terms of unique clients, it does land in eighth place in terms of visits. So the party site generates a lot of visits.
A total of 148 websites are shown in the current publication, including 13 websites without third-party advertising. Newly included are the websites 4-4-2.com, Ausflugsziele.ch, Energy Zürich and GHI.ch. By means of the study, Swiss websites can have their traffic figures certified and published.
Net-Metrix AG was launched on April 16, 2007 by SRG, Wemf and the ICT association Simsa (see

The White Lady from Persil

Her blonde hair is tucked under an elegant hat, and a white, low-cut dress flows around her slender waist. Although the White Lady has no name, she does have an impeccable reputation—and has had one since 1922. That’s why Persil’s most famous spokesperson is once again gracing laundry detergent packaging today.

For years she was lost in mothballs, but now the famous White Lady of Persil advertising is celebrating her comeback. The washing powder is celebrating its centenary and to mark the occasion is organizing a guest appearance by its best-known advertising figure on Persil packaging.Persil, the best-selling laundry detergent in Germany, is turning 100. According to the Süddeutsche, the creation of such a product was a true revolution for the ordinary housewife, as the washing process became easier and bleaching unnecessary.
From 1922, the White Lady was used for the first time as an advertising medium. In 1950, she even took off as an actress; a career that was to last until the end of the 1960s. Half a century ago, an elderly gentleman asked an elegantly dressed young woman in a white costume for the first time in a commercial: "Don't we know each other?" The woman addressed replied confidently, "Maybe so, sir. Millions know me." Although she has been retired for over 30 years, the White Lady has lost none of her self-assurance and familiarity.

Heiligendamm is a hot spot at the moment. But if water cannon showers, rubber truncheon treatment or tear gas inhalation are not your thing, but you still want to express your displeasure with the prevailing conditions, you can demonstrate on the Unicef website in a completely safe way.

Heiligendamm is a hot spot at the moment. But if water cannon showers, rubber truncheon treatment or tear gas inhalation are not your thing, but you still want to express your displeasure with the prevailing conditions, you can demonstrate on the Unicef website in a completely safe way.
At the G8 summit in Heiligendamm, some people are once again busy smashing down fences, beating up police officers (and vice versa) and blocking railroad lines. Meanwhile the others are just as busy having dignified dinners and deciding nothing. This not only infuriates representatives of the black bloc, but also many innocent citizens who don't think it's okay how the powerful are muddling along. The UN's children's department, Unicef, has set up a site precisely for this clientele, where you can create your own little demonstrator to stand up for these causes. On Thursday evening, there were already around 3,000 virtual protesters on the site, demanding an immediate stop to globalization, less greed and more rights for children. Let's hope that the G8 ladies and gentlemen at least know how to open a browser.

Good journalism is expensive

At a panel discussion organized by News Aktuell in Hamburg, experts came to the conclusion that the financing of quality journalism is the decisive challenge in the Web age.

At a panel discussion organized by News Aktuell in Hamburg, experts came to the conclusion that the financing of quality journalism is the decisive challenge in the Web age.
As reported by the press portal, more than 250 press officers, PR experts and journalists attended the discussion "From noble pen to content supplier? - Print Media in Transition. Stern.de Editor-in-Chief Frank Thomson, for example, does not believe that online providers will displace the traditional media. Nevertheless, he sees news providers like Google, which distribute collected news for free on their platforms, as a threat to traditional journalism. Holger Stark from Spiegel expressed concern that 70 percent of online advertising revenue already goes to Google and Yahoo, which do not invest in journalism. In addition, he said, journalistic research is suffering as a result of the Internet: Information is often no longer obtained by phone or interviews, but "Googled." According to Kuno Haberbusch of NDR, younger generations mainly obtain information via the Internet. The print media urgently need to find concepts to reintroduce these target groups to classic content.

But demonizing Google is wrong, says Jan-Eric Peters, Director of the Axel Spinger Academy, because the Internet has also made research easier and improved it. The user has more background information through video or audio elements or links than in print. As in everyday journalistic life, the media are also becoming more and more intermingled on the audience side. But the question is whether enough money will continue to be spent on good journalism in the future, says Peters. Dpa editor-in-chief Wilm Herlyn has no reservations, because in economically lean times, savings are mainly made in the online area: "After the media hype in 2001, the FAZ, for example, mainly laid off journalists from the online area. Their work was taken over by print editors." The general trend from print to online, however, has few consequences for young journalists, he said. "Even in the online age, there will be noble springs," says Herlyn.

Presenter Anna Maier and ex-Mr. Switzerland Miguel San Juan emphasize the price advantages and raffle off a Micra Coupé Cabriolet. According to information from the press portal, the two beauties engage in a chase: Maier hangs on to Miguel, but after a showdown in the parking garage she decides not to go for the man, but for his car, a Coupé Cabriolet (C+C) from Nissan. Anyone who, like Maier, thinks the C+C is the dream model par excellence only needs to answer three questions correctly to be in with a chance of winning one of the speedsters. Nissan is also offering a summer bonus for both models, which can save buyers up to CHF 1,500, depending on the model. The promotions are being widely advertised, including on posters in commuter trains and intercity trains, in print advertisements and on web banners.

Brunner Druck und Medien is the first graphic arts company in Central Switzerland to have been compliant with the ISO 12647-2 quality standard since April. For Brunner, this marks an important step toward the future and a commitment to international standards.
During the one-day audit in March, experts from the Swiss Center of Excellence for Media and Printing Technology (UGRA) reviewed production processes and the expertise of sales staff—both in-house and in the field—as well as prepress employees. According to Presseportal, various work steps—such as data handling and printing plate production—were evaluated, and the calibration of monitors and the quality of proofs were checked. The ISO 12647-2 standard forms the basis of the «Offset Printing Process Standard» and thus of the «Media Standard for Printing.» The goal of these standards—which are currently the subject of heated debate within the industry—is to ensure optimal collaboration between clients (agencies) and service providers (prepress and printing) in media production. ISO certification also demonstrates that a company is making sound investments in its employees, services, and products—in short, in the future.
