Last but not least: Court bans images

According to a ruling by the German Federal Court of Justice, photos of Herbert Grönemeyer's girlfriend may no longer be published.

The photos of Herbert Grönemeyer's girlfriend may no longer be published following a ruling by the German Federal Supreme Court. As the news agency SDA writes in a report, the court has banned the magazine Bunte from publishing pictures of the Zurich woman. She did not have to accept reporting on her privacy. Bunte published pictures showing the couple in a café in Rome and strolling in a pedestrian zone. For the Federal Court of Justice, this was a recognizably private situation that had no connection to a historical event. As the pictures were not a contribution of general interest or information about a historical event, they were not allowed to appear in Bunte. The only question is whether this ruling has any effect on photos of celebrities and their appendages in general? After all, photos of children and girlfriends of stars are not really of general interest and stars themselves are not really historical events.

Grey has launched the national campaign for the new Sony Cyber-shot. With this communication package, Sony aims to further expand its market leadership. Based on a strategy that applies to Europe, Grey has developed a new and independent campaign, the agency writes in a press release. This was adapted to the special market situation in Switzerland - a larger proportion of expensive devices, a more design- and lifestyle-oriented target audience. Unlike the usual advertising for cameras, which focuses on the subject, the Sony Cyber-shot poster campaign changes the perspective by 180 degrees. The focus is not on the photographed object, but on the photographer from the subject. The headline "For the pictures of your life" is intended to be both a promise of quality and a campaign slogan.

German marketers of RTL and Pro7Sat1 searched

The German Federal Cartel Office suspects an anti-competitive agreement between Pro7Sat1 and RTL. The advertising sales divisions of both companies are under investigation.

The German Cartel Office suspects anti-competitive collusion between Pro7Sat1 and RTL. As reported by the news agency SDA, the German Cartel Office has had the subsidiaries of RTL and Pro7Sat1 responsible for marketing searched. The reason for this is the suspicion of illegal agreements between the companies under competition law. The Cartel Office suspects that Sevenonemedia and the marketing company IP, which belongs to RTL, granted their customers such high discounts that smaller providers were no longer able to compete. The Cartel Office estimates the combined market share of IP and Sevenonemedia at 80 percent.

Executive chair back at Yahoo

Yahoo has been lagging behind Google for quite some time, and a new CEO is now set to change that. Co-founder Jerry Yang is taking over from Terry Semel.

Yahoo has been lagging behind Google for some time, and a new boss is now set to change that. Co-founder Jerry Yang is taking over from Terry Semel. Jerry Yang founded Yahoo together with David Filo in 1994. For years, Yahoo was the leading search engine on the Internet, but then Google came, saw and won. For the shareholders, CEO Terry Semel acted wrongly and they accused him of not having found a recipe against Google. As the news agency SDA writes in a report, Google has a market share of 49.7 percent of Internet search queries in the USA, with Yahoo trailing in second place with 26.8 percent. Even if it is a huge challenge, he is ready, announced the new boss Yang. Yang has always played a key role in the company since its foundation. In his opinion, there are no plans to sell Yahoo.

Cannes: Behind the scenes of the Direct jury

Andreas Widmer, CEO of Wunderman and CEO of Futurecom Interactive, served as a jury member in the «Direct» category at Cannes. He reveals what the jury considers to be the deciding factors, why the presentation must be as good as the campaign itself, and how the Direct Marketing category has evolved.

Andreas Widmer, CEO of Wunderman and CEO of Futurecom interactive, was a member of the jury in the "Direct" category in Cannes. He reveals what is decisive for the jury match, why the presentation has to be as good as the campaign and how the DM category has developed. This year, I had the honor of helping to decide the winners of the Cannes Direct Lions for the second time as a Swiss: As one of 30 jury members from all over the world, I was able to spend 5 days (and sometimes nights) marathoning through 1689 submissions from 80 countries. My personal conclusion:
Even though it should be obvious, being among the best in Cannes does not primarily mean having submitted a particularly effective work. Creativity is what counts first and foremost in the awarding of prizes - which, of course, usually automatically contributes to the success of a work in terms of impact. However, the focus is primarily on the creative idea and not on the response generated.
The best works all had one thing in common: they did not buy the favor of the target group, but won it through attractive and relevant content. They were so irresistible that the viewer wanted to see the commercial form of communication. Vive la Creativité.
Creativity, however, was crucial for a second match: the way in which the work is submitted has become even more important if it is to stand up to global comparison. We had to painfully realize this ourselves. Or to put it another way: submitting a good work on the familiar presentation board is no longer enough in Cannes. A campaign for the campaign helps, and a submission film has the potential to make the difference between getting in and getting out.
Another development worth mentioning concerns the Direct discipline itself: It has once again changed massively in Cannes; one could almost speak of a convergence of disciplines. On the one hand, this development is hugely exciting for agencies: everything is DM. On the other hand, the blending is likely to lead to a dilution of the category, which is something to keep a close eye on.
You will find the full article in the next issue of Werbewoche. Andreas Widmer reveals what you need to know as a submitter to be successful. On newsstands or in your letterbox from Thursday.

USA: Murdoch gets competition

Murdoch is not the only one who wants to take over the American publishing house Dow Jones. The head of Pearson, Marjorie Scardino, is now interfering with the Australian and is no longer just watching.

The scramble for the American Dow Jones publishing house continues (see: ). Now Pearson CEO Scardino is trying to outbid Murdoch for the Wall Street Journal with a counter offer. As part of Murdoch's media group News Corp., the business newspaper could become a strong competitor for the Financial Times, which belongs to the British media group Pearson. According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Scardino was in New York last week to find partners for the takeover. Apparently, she is in talks with General Electric and its media division NBC Universal. In addition to the Financial Times, Pearson's newspaper business includes a stake in the Economist and the French business newspaper Les Echos, which the British publisher is considering selling, according to a report by the news agency SDA. The publishing group does most of its business with school and specialist books, as well as Penguin Publishing.
