The Zurich Advertising Club hosted a talk with Roger Schawinski on Thursday. Under the title "The market gap - and how to find it," the former radio pioneer showed how he wants to pioneer again with his Radio 1.
"You find a gap in the market where everyone else isn't looking," Schawinski said by way of introduction. It's "unimaginative" how everyone in radio today runs in the same direction and indulges in the same mainstream. With a lot of effort for research, managers in some headquarters decide which 300 songs should be played up and down all day long. "This is how a radio without a soul is created," said Schawinski, who at that time still designed his program "from the gut. He also said that today the spoken word contributions are only in the area of "misfortunes and crimes".
"The medium of radio is no longer properly looked after," Schawinski summarized. And in response to this "gravy", he finally came up with the idea for his "market niche": cultivated radio, again as it was back then. But for a new target group. The claim for his new station is: "Radio 1 - for adults only. That excludes. "But it also includes." He makes a radio as if for himself, that is, one that he would also like to listen to himself. "There will therefore definitely be "no research" for his Radio1.
At the moment, Schawinski is busy working with old companions to check 5000 music titles for their suitability for his new radio. "All titles that have fallen through the cracks of today's radios." Schawinski described himself to the Advertising Club panel as a "musical average guy," making him the ideal benchmark for his new radio. "The closest thing you have to music is the music you experienced your first love with..." But the new Radio 1 is not intended to be nostalgic or an "oldies station."
With Radio1, Schawinski wants to give the industry "a new impulse. The response to the announcement has already been overwhelming. He is already in the process of hiring "the best journalists and the best voices" for his station. In order to be able to pull off the "top quality," Radio1 also does not want to broadcast every spot. In many cases, today's spots fit "perfectly with the sauce of today's radios. Schawinski therefore hopes that better spots will be produced for his station again. In the discussion with the advertisers present, however, he was not yet able to answer the question of how this is to be achieved in concrete terms. In addition to the healthcare industry, he also mentions tour operators and banks as possible customers. This already works very convincingly at "AM 740," a station in Toronto that could be a possible model for Radio 1.
Schawinski, who still spends part of his life in Berlin, feels that this city of 18 radios is the ideal place to find inspiration for his new concept. "Now I have the opportunity to start again with a white sheet." The name Radio 1 was also a souvenir from Berlin, he said. For Switzerland, this name was still free. Only the domain www.radio1.ch was already taken. Schawinski had it bought anonymously through a German secretary. "Under my name, it probably would have cost a fortune."
Radio1 will broadcast on 93.0 for the time being, starting in January with a continuous "sound test" as a teaser. In March, it is to go on the air for real, accompanied by a major advertising campaign. A new license application is already in the works, according to which Radio 1 will then be able to broadcast to a larger area from the Üetliberg instead of the Zürichberg.
