NZZ plays a steep pass to Euro 08

The NZZ is warming up for the upcoming Euro 08 and, under the slogan «Intelligent Through Passes,» is offering a wide range of content. This includes a magazine supplement, a panel discussion, and a daily Sonderbund during the tournament.

The NZZ is dribbling itself warm for the upcoming Euro 08 and is offering a whole range of content under the motto "Intelligente Steilpässe". Since last June, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung has published a Euro 2008 page on the first Thursday of every month. It will now be supplemented by a weekly special report in the NZZ am Sonntag.
In May, NZZ Online launches a betting game and a so-called Team-O-Mat, with which users can interactively determine their favorite team. The online sports editorial team will also be asking questions "all about the ball". One week before kick-off, the 48-page magazine supplement for the major event will be published, with a total circulation of over 300,000 copies in the NZZ and NZZ am Sonntag.
During the tournament, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung will publish a daily special bundle from June 7 to June 30, in which the topic will be covered from a variety of angles, according to a press release. In the NZZ am Sonntag, the sports section will be expanded in a similar way. A cross-departmental editorial team produces this reporting.
The actual kick-off for the euro offensive will take place on April 24 with an NZZ podium event in Zurich's Kaufleuten-Festsaal. Peter Sloterdijk, Sibylle Berg and Erich Vogel will then discuss the topic of "Bread and Games". NZZ-Libro-Verlag will also be publishing the book "Millisekunden und Milliarden", which provides background information on the connections between sport and the economy.

Google cuts jobs after Doubleclick takeover

Google has begun implementing the job cuts it announced following its acquisition of the online advertising company DoubleClick: In the first round, approximately 300 DoubleClick employees are set to be laid off.

Google has gotten serious with its announced job cuts following the takeover of the online advertising company Doubleclick: In a first wave, around 300 employees are to be made redundant at Doubleclick. This corresponds to around a quarter of the workforce in the USA. Further redundancies are to follow in the future, both in and outside the United States.Google wants to divest itself of Doubleclick's search engine marketing division as quickly as possible, as reported by Netzwoche. Google wants to avoid a clash of different business interests with the search and advertising divisions and maintain a neutral position. Although a buyer has not yet been determined, several interested parties have already come forward, Google announced. Search Marketing will continue to operate as a separate unit until a sale is finalized.
There are also rumors that the internet company is interested in acquiring the online telephone service Skype. According to Pressetext.ch, this emerges from a report by the industry service Techcrunch, citing informed company circles. The service, which belongs to the online auction house Ebay, is already the subject of negotiations with Google. Apart from a possible outright acquisition, Ebay's top management could also imagine a collaboration with the search engine provider.

A change of boss at Radio e Televisiun Rumantscha is imminent

Rhaeto-Romanic radio and television will have to look for a new director by next year: Director Bernard Cathomas will reach retirement age for SRG management members this year and will hand over his position in April 2009. According to the SRG company, the past year was a successful one.

SRG's Rhaeto-Romanic radio and television must look for a new director by next year: Director Bernard Cathomas will reach retirement age for SRG management members this year and will hand over his position in April 2009. The position will be advertised for a new appointment. Last year was a successful one for Radio e Televisiun Rumantscha, according to its own figures. The broadcasts in the fourth national language attracted greater attention. According to a survey, Radio Rumantsch set a record among Romansh speakers in 2007. The station achieved a 57 percent share of the general audience. The market share for the broadcasting area of Romansh-speaking Switzerland rose from 14 to 18 percent.
Rhaeto-Romanic television programs are watched by 60 percent of the Romansh-speaking population. The number of viewers who watch television programs on the SF Info channel has grown. An important innovation took place in February of this year: for the first time since the introduction of the fourth broadcasting chain for Svizra Rumantscha around 24 years ago, Radio Rumantsch is broadcasting a program around the clock.
No solution has yet been found for the expansion of Televisiun Rumantscha's broadcasting time, as the company in Chur announced on Thursday. The plan to broadcast on the planned new children's channel failed because SF is not realizing this channel.

Publishers and SRG move closer to joining the Press Council

There has been an ongoing debate for some time about whether the SRG and newspaper publishers can join the Press Council. Now it appears that progress is being made: The journalists’ self-regulatory body announced that an agreement on the details had been reached with the parties involved in early March.

The debate about whether the SRG and newspaper publishers should be allowed to join the Press Council has been simmering for some time. Now it seems to be taking a step forward: Agreement was reached with the parties on the modalities at the beginning of March, the self-regulatory body for journalists announced on Thursday. However, the approval of the journalists' associations is still pending. Negotiations between the Foundation Board of the Swiss Press Council and the SRG and the Swiss Press Association on the latter's accession to the Press Council's sponsorship initially failed last autumn: there was no agreement on the demarcation between the complaints procedure before the Press Council and the program law procedures at ombudsman offices and the Independent Complaints Authority for Radio and Television. In the meantime, however, a joint agreement has apparently been reached.
The expansion of sponsorship is now being discussed once again by the previous sponsors, the four journalist associations. They had postponed the decision last fall (see
The CLA as a bargaining chip
). The Board of Trustees of the Swiss Press Council Foundation will make a final decision at the beginning of June 2008. In the event of a yes vote, implementation of the expansion of sponsorship should begin on July 1, 2008.

"Only an advertisement can do that" special

Special: They racked their brains, worked late into the night, and drank copious amounts of coffee to highlight the benefits of a newspaper ad in a concise and to-the-point way. We’re talking about the participants in this year’s «That Can Only Be an Ad» contest. Here, we present the 11-page special.

They have worked hard, toiled into the night and consumed vast quantities of coffee to present the advantages of a newspaper advertisement in a nutshell. We are talking about the participants in this year's "Only an advertisement can do that" competition. For the third time, the Swiss Press Association is focusing on young talent. When it comes to creativity, young people certainly don't have to hide behind agency professionals. On the contrary. There is a breath of fresh air in the Swiss think tank. That's why Werbewoche took a closer look at the advertising juniors. On the eleven pages you will find the talents, their stories and their work. And we not only looked at the winners of the competition, but also at those who made us smile. This issue demonstrates once again how exciting the topic of advertising is. And: young people are totally into it. Editor: Christian Lüscher

Rejection of times gone by

Natural gas I Bern-based Polyconsult uses extinct dinosaurs to promote driving with natural gas.

Natural gas as a fuel for cars still has to fight for acceptance. We all know that natural gas is an environmentally friendly energy source. Natural gas cars would therefore be the modern replacement for gasoline and diesel vehicles. Not only are they cleaner, their fuel price is also significantly lower. In Bern and the surrounding area, Energie Wasser Bern, as the regional natural gas supplier, is therefore promoting the new possibilities. Logistically, the network of filling stations in the area is being expanded. The Polyconsult agency is now to provide incentives for switching when buying a new car.
For CD Jürg Tscharner, the message in this campaign must not only confirm the eco-fundies in their opinion, but should above all "appeal to techno-conscious drivers and families with children". With this in mind, Polyconsult has developed playful subjects with a high impact.
With a medium-term recency strategy - aimed at long ranges - it is being made clear to drivers in the greater Bern area that natural gas cars are not eco-cars, but the hip alternative when buying a new car. The central message is: if you drive with natural gas, you are moving with the times. This is visualized with the symbolic power of the long-extinct dinosaurs.
A poster and advertising campaign ensures presence. In addition, Energie Wasser Bern is focusing its marketing efforts on cultivating relationships with dealers and major customers.

Paper II Antalis shows with the book "Papers with character - for people with character" that every property must find its right form.
Coated or uncoated papers are often printed, but not always finished. For embossing, scented coatings, special colors or other forms and effects, creative papers are often the only choice, i.e. the so-called specials. Antalis now shows in a beautiful book what is possible with uncoated papers, boards and coated papers. In "Papers with Character - for People with Character," unique and outstanding finishes come to the fore in a very special way. A small event in paper wholesaling.Highlights with finishesFor example, the graphic boards "TruCard 1" and "Carta Integra" feature great die-cuts. The possibilities of color brilliance are demonstrated by printing with spot color on the lightly coated "Novatech Easy Matt" paper. Aleo Silk", the new FSC-certified coated paper, shows how blind embossing can achieve a completely new look and feel. Gloss and liveliness are conveyed by the example of relief coating in a basis weight of 280 g/m2 on Euroset paper. Further roles in the attractive presentation of unusual finishes are played by the paper grades Edixion, Zanders ikono silk, Chromolux 700, Black Label (satin and gloss) Novatech (satin and gloss) and Mega (silk and gloss).
Attention to detailEach individual paper is an expression of distinctive texture and thus the basis for great freedom of design. The consultant book is designed with great attention to detail. It brings pictures to life in the proverbial sense, thus not only pleasing the eye, but also encouraging people to touch them. With "Papers with Character - for People with Character," Antalis consultants now have another vivid argument for using standard papers. The aim is to show advertising agencies and marketing professionals the wide range of possibilities offered by these papers. "Not least because the importance of offset and digital printing and finishing in combination with the right choice of paper is increasing," says Yvonne Nievergelt, Head of PM & Marketing Communications, Antalis AG. Haldimann blogs about «smoke grenades» and «heavier artillery»

Although Ringier TV and SF have settled their dispute over the «Kassensturz» segment, it still seems to be weighing on some of those involved. In any case, SF Editor-in-Chief Ueli Haldimann can’t resist taking a few jabs in a blog post.

Although Ringier TV and SF have settled their dispute over the «Kassensturz» segment in what Ombudsman Achille Casanova called a «constructive discussion,» it still seems to be weighing on some of those involved. In any case, SF Editor-in-Chief Ueli Haldimann can’t resist a few jabs in a blog post: Ringier TV reportedly refused to comment on camera at the time, but subsequently brought out «even heavier artillery.» A lawsuit was loudly announced. Haldimann believes the «smoke screen» worked: Instead of reporting on the use of donations, the «evil media» focused on the announced lawsuit. In the end, nothing came of the lawsuit, and Ringier and Presse TV “only” filed a complaint with the ombudsman. The complaint has now been settled amicably (see
). Haldimann issued a statement saying that *Kassensturz* did not intend to give the impression that Ringier TV had made a profit from producing the Cancer Gala. He expressed regret if that had happened after all. The SF editor-in-chief goes on to write in his blog that issuing this statement was not difficult. After all, *Kassensturz* never claimed that Ringier was making a profit from the program. The consumer affairs show may not have stated this verbatim—but sentences like «What hardly anyone knows: Ringier TV gets paid by the Cancer League for the fundraising spectacle» did appear several times. Haldimann’s blog post, however, omits this—one can’t quite shake the impression that the editor-in-chief is having a hard time swallowing the apology he issued, even if he tries to convey the opposite in casual terms.
