Swiss magazine Kinki gets off to a good start

Since March 17, the lifestyle magazine *Kinki*, published by St. Gallen-based Aurum Communication AG, has been available at newsstands and by subscription. With this move, the publishers are bucking the trend toward free distribution among trendy magazines. An online platform developed by Orange 8 is set to follow soon.

The lifestyle magazine Kinki, published by Aurum Communication AG in St. Gallen, was launched on March 17. According to editor-in-chief Matthias Straub, Kinki aims to fill the gap left by the discontinuation of a number of Swiss scene and lifestyle magazines under the motto "young, cheeky, Switzerland". Straub produces the magazine with a small team and many freelancers. Kinki aims to offer current topics from Switzerland and the rest of the world in the areas of politics, social affairs, fashion, music and sport. The Zurich agency Raffinerie AG is responsible for the design. The two publishers Melania Fernandez and Mark Mirutz are bucking the free trend with Kinki: Unlike other lifestyle magazines, their product is not available for free in trendy stores, but is sold at newsstands and by subscription. "We have received feedback from many stores that the free scene magazines don't sell at all. That's why we're using a different concept here," explains Mirutz.
The two are very satisfied with the start: "We were able to gain 250 subscribers in the first two weeks," says Mirutz. The first issue had a circulation of 30,000 copies, which is to be increased to 40,000 for the next issue. This is because an advertising tour at universities and universities of applied sciences is planned in order to reach the target group of 20 to 35-year-olds. The makers have also promoted Kinki with a promotion at Valora and a TV commercial, which they produced together with the agency Creation Club and which was shown on Star TV and MTV.
A major advertising offensive is set to get underway in the coming months, as Kinki wants to expand: On June 1, a web platform developed by the agency Orange 8 will be launched to attract the scene community. Until now, Kinki has been represented online with an e-paper that users can view free of charge. According to Mirutz, three different login levels will be introduced when the expanded platform goes online: Two different paid accesses and a guest login, which is available for free.
According to Mirutz, interest from the advertising industry is encouraging, "even if the start is always tough, of course". Aurum Communication AG handles the advertising sales itself. In addition to the magazine and the website, Kinki has a third platform: monthly events are held at Zurich's Mascotte club to coincide with each release.

It has launched Lovepeace.ch (see also ), a dating and community website for Greenpeace. Lovepeace.ch is intended to prove that environmental protection and a sustainable lifestyle have nothing to do with hostility to pleasure. After singles and National Council candidates, footballers are now stripping off for Migros. The orange supermarket chain's previous underwear campaigns have caused quite a stir. Migros deliberately wants to advertise with "completely normal people". This spring, it is now helping to fuel football fever and is having the latest underwear collection presented by footballers on Monday. The posters, again realized by Spillmann/Felser/Leo Burnett, are intended to bring previously undiscovered talents such as Sandra from SC YF Juventus, Larissa from Zurich United or Christophe from FC Bex to the fore. You can find out more about the players' dreams, role models and tips for the European Championship final at Migrosmodels.ch. The new models are also presented on the Migros fan platform M08.ch.

Last but not least: Come in and find your way out again

The majority of people do not understand the English slogans in advertising, studies have shown. Now the all-clear can be given: According to a new study, it doesn't depend on the language whether a claim resonates with the viewer or not.

The majority of people do not understand the English slogans in advertising, studies have shown. We reported on this briefly (see ). Now the all-clear can be given: According to a study on the effect of English slogans in Swiss-German advertising, it does not depend on the language whether a claim resonates with the viewer or not. To be appealing, a slogan does not necessarily have to be in English. The fact that many English claims are not understood by viewers is not necessarily a disadvantage for the author of the study, Ursina Kellerhals. She is quoted in the Aargauer Zeitung as saying that the blurring of meaning allows everyone to interpret the claim in the most credible, positive or ideal way. At this point, we are reminded of Douglas' unforgotten claim: "Come in and find out", often translated as "Come in and find your way out". Those responsible probably found this interpretation anything but credible, positive and ideal. The new slogan is bland but unmistakable: "Douglas makes life more beautiful".
