Rhaeto-Romanic news agency to save La Quotidiana

La Quotidiana, Switzerland’s only Romansh-language daily newspaper, is set to continue publishing at its usual frequency next year. Contrary to earlier announcements, assistance for the struggling newspaper is now coming from the Romansh news agency Agentura da Novitads Rumantscha (ANR).

La Quotidiana, Switzerland's only Romansh-language daily newspaper, will continue to be published at its usual rhythm next year. Contrary to previous announcements, the Romansh news agency Agentura da Novitads Rumantscha ANR is now helping the struggling newspaper. The Board of Trustees announced this decision on Tuesday.
The newspaper, which has been published since 1997, is the main client of the Romansh news agency. The ANR was founded in 1996 with the aim of supporting the Romansh media in order to preserve and promote the Romansh language. As the agency is financed by public funds, the concept still requires the approval of the federal government and the canton of Graubünden. At the beginning of November, the Graubünden government spoke out against commissioning the ANR to publish the newspaper.
Südostschweiz publisher Hanspeter Lebrument announced in the summer that La Quotidiana would only be published once a week in 2009 if the daily newspaper could not be produced more cheaply. In order to reduce costs, the editorial teams of ANR and La Quotidiana are now to move closer together and utilize synergies. The pool comprises 870 full-time equivalents, which are financed by ANR. The Südostschweiz Media Group in Chur provides the editor-in-chief and the staff for the production of the daily newspaper, which has a circulation of around 5500 copies.

Court rejects claim by ex-media mogul Kirch against Deutsche Bank

On Tuesday, media entrepreneur Leo Kirch sued Deutsche Bank for 3.5 billion euros in damages for the bankruptcy of his group of companies in one of the largest lawsuits in German economic history. However, on the first day of the trial, the Munich Regional Court rejected part of the claim by default, as Kirch's lawyers had not submitted any motions for part of the claims at the start of the trial.
Kirch accuses Deutsche Bank that his insolvency in 2002 was triggered by a statement made by former Deutsche Bank CEO Rolf Breuer. Breuer had questioned Kirch's creditworthiness in an interview a few months before the bankruptcy.
However, Deutsche Bank reiterated that there was no causal link between Breuer's comments and the insolvency. Kirch's company had already been over-indebted before the interview in February 2002. Kirch and Breuer did not appear in court and were represented by lawyers. After several hours of hearings, the court set a date for March 10, 2009.
Kirch used to be one of the most powerful media entrepreneurs in Germany, having built up a group of companies with around 10,000 employees. Kirch Media, which included the television stations Pro Sieben, Sat.1 and N24, was at the heart of the group. The collapse of the group was one of the biggest economic bankruptcies in Germany.

On Thursday, November 20, 2008, this year's film awards of the cities of Zurich and Winterthur as well as the success awards of the Filmstiftung Zürich "Succès Zürich" were presented at the Theater Winterthur. The award ceremony took place within the framework of the Cadrage event. The awards went to the three young directors Oliver Rihs, Simon Nagel and Carmen Stadler.
The three filmmakers were selected in advance by the KSB/SJ agency together with the Filmstiftung from a pre-selection of thirteen young directors. The aim was to realize the agency's concept of an image advertisement for the foundation itself as well as for "good film". The directors developed their film stories and also directed them themselves. The assignment was to quote a film genre they had chosen themselves, and to use the film story to lead up to a clichéd film conclusion, but to resolve the film at the end with a punch and a word in a way that one would not have expected.
The result is three extremely independent, cinematic gems: "Love" by Oliver Rihs, "Spiel" by Simon Nagel and "Schnee" by Carmen Stadler. The advertising agency KSB/SJ, Condor Pictures, Egli Film as well as helpers who supported the project with words and deeds collaborated on the film projects. The films were financially supported by Raiffeisen Banks Zurich, Winterthur and Thalwil. The three films can now be seen in cinemas throughout German-speaking Switzerland.
