Imprint: Board and honorary members elected

The newly elected Impressum Central Executive Board will continue to be chaired by Christian Campiche. The Executive Board intends to lead Impressum into a new social partnership in German-speaking Switzerland. Peter Studer and Bertil Galland have been named honorary members.

The journalists of Impressum, Switzerland's largest organization of media professionals, elected a new central board at their delegates' meeting on March 18, 2016. Christian Campiche, journalist, author and publisher of the online magazine La Méduse, remains president. Emiliana Salvisberg, previously a member of the board, was elected vice president. She is an editor at the Zofinger Tagblatt. Edgar Bloch (freelance journalist, Lausanne), Jean-Luc Wenger (journalist of the satirical magazine Vigousse) and Sarah Ganzmann (editor of BaZ and freelance journalist) were confirmed in office. Newly elected were Natascha Fioretti (freelance journalist, Lugano) and Viktor Parma (freelance journalist, book author).

According to a statement, the Assembly of Delegates regretted the resignation of the previous Vice President Vito Robbiani (video journalist, Ticino). Professional and private reasons forced him to take this step. He was honored with applause for his many years of service.

An eventful time awaits the new board: On the one hand, the previous Impressum bodies have persuaded the general meeting of Schweizer Medien to decide that new CLA negotiations should take place, which now await the new board. Furthermore, Impressum is discussing forms of closer cooperation with the organizations Syndicom, SSM and SFJ-AJS.

Imprint has appointed Peter Studer from Zurich and Bertil Galland from Vaud as honorary members. Imprint thus honors two personalities who have made extraordinary contributions to journalism and its values.

Last but not least: Hairstyle to bite

This Russian design concept for pasta packaging is really just waiting to be put into practice.

Russian designer Nikita shows on his Behance profile a packaging idea that makes your mouth water. Figuratively speaking. Even if the contextual connection of hair and pasta is not quite comprehensible. Is forgivable in this case. You would also reach for this product, wouldn't you? Well packaged is half sold. (hae)

Amadeus Waltenspühl is Graphic Designer of the Year 2016

The Swiss Graphic Academy has decided: Amadeus Waltenspühl is Graphic Designer of the Year 2016; the Lifetime Award goes to Armin Hofmann. The award ceremony took place during Grafik16.

Amadeus Waltenspühl, Yvo Hählen, Jiri Oplatek, Laurenz Brunner, and Urs Lehni - the Swiss Graphic Academy jury headed by jury president Melchior Imboden nominated them all for the inaugural Swiss Graphic Designer of the Year award. Now the 600-member Swiss Graphic Academy, which is made up primarily of graphic artists and designers working in Switzerland, but also includes selected personalities from the worlds of culture, business and politics, has made its choice: The first Swiss Graphic Designer of the Year is 31-year-old Amadeus Waltenspühl from the city of Lucerne.

The Waltenspühl family - a graphic family

The independent graphic designer, illustrator and animation designer comes from a graphic design family. His father is an independent graphic designer. And his mother, originally an architect, as well as his brother, a trained polygrapher, are also active in the design field. "I was already conditioned to design as a small child. My father had his studio at home at the time and always actively involved me in his work," says Waltenspühl. So his path seemed to be mapped out. And indeed, after an intensive artistic excursion into music - Waltenspühl was a drummer in various bands and a beatboxer, and even a Swiss champion in this field - he decided to pursue graphic design as a career after all, graduated from the graphic design class in Lucerne, and earned a Master of Arts in design, animation, and illustration. Today he teaches at the graphic design class in Lucerne and at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU).

Waltenspühl's work not only shapes the cityscape of Lucerne, but also to a decisive extent youth culture, formerly in Lucerne, today throughout Switzerland. The 31-year-old is still heavily involved in cultural activities and devotes around half of his working hours to this. He designs posters for concerts, bands, parties, clubs and festivals, makes CD covers and even live visuals. Waltenspühl also works for various international clients in the fields of illustration, animation and graphic design. Some of his works have also been exhibited internationally, for example in Moscow, Vladivostok and Beijing.

Lifetime Award for Winterthur graphic artist Armin Hofmann

With the Lifetime Award, the jury of the Swiss Graphic Academy honors the life's work of 96-year-old Winterthur graphic artist, sculptor and book designer Armin Hofmann. "Hofmann is one of the defining figures of Swiss graphic design," explains jury president Melchior Imboden. As a teacher and lecturer for many years, he has been a pioneering figure for a generation of young graphic designers, he says. Hofmann also had a lasting influence on graphic design on an international level: in the 1960s, he was a visiting professor at various international schools, including the Philadelphia College of Art, the National Institute of Design in India and Yale University in Connecticut. Hofmann continued to develop himself and his work. Contrary to the concept of the constructive, most of Hofmann's posters allow for a symbolic reading: for example, the image of a laughing clown (for the 1960/61 season at the Basel Stadttheater) or his famous Tell poster of 1963, which dispenses with any alpine romanticism and instead depicts an apple in black and white with "Tell" written on it in a strange-looking typography. Today Hofmann lives in Lucerne. Hofmann was extremely pleased to receive the Lifetime Award from the jury of the Swiss Graphic Academy: "This prize is a great honor for me. And shows that my work is sustainable."

TBWA\Zurich: Meeting of the giants

At TBWA\Zurich's Disruption Talk #2, Michael Conrad met Jean-Marie Dru.

When Michael Conrad meets Jean-Marie Dru, the knowledge of more than 70 years of advertising comes together. While the former founded TBWA Frankfurt together with Walter Lürzer in 1972, made Leo Burnett the "Global Agency Network" worldwide in 2000 and today heads the Berlin School of Creative Leadership, the latter started his career in 1971 at Dupuy Compton (now Saatchi & Saatchi), became CEO of Young & Rubicam in Paris in 1979, co-founded the BDDP Group in 1984 and became President of TBWA\Worldwide in 1998, where he is still Chairman of the Board today.

Disruptiontalk_Bild

However, the exciting thing about this evening was not so much the careers of the two gentlemen, but rather their views on the creative industries in connection with major innovations in business and research. Jean-Marie Dru, who founded the disruption methodology in the 1980s and recently published his sixth book on the subject, reported on episodes from the network.

As an example, he mentioned the current and successful case involving the Nissan GTR. After Deadmau5, producer of electronic music, was not allowed to customize his Ferrari 458 Spider, TBWA quickly put an even faster Nissan GTR in front of his door and let the fans make suggestions for the design. Deadmau5 was thrilled and the campaign quickly reached millions of users via social media, positioning the Nissan GTR as a likeable and younger alternative to a Ferrari almost overnight.

TBWA has not only protected the term disruption as a trademark, but is currently also successfully implementing the methodology with its clients in everyday life with Disruption Live, as detailed in a press release. At the end of the Disruption Talk #2, Jean-Marie Dru was available to answer questions and signed his new book "The Way to New" for the participants.

Viva publicizes vehicle ID scanner

Viva Kommunikation created a video for the Swiss vehicle data specialist Auto-i-dat, which was unveiled as a world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show.

It's a blues that every car dealer sings: Recording vehicle data is tedious, especially if you do it several times a day. Auto-i-dat, the Swiss market leader for vehicle data, presented its vehicle registration scanner as a world first at the Geneva Motor Show - accompanied by a product video that demonstrates the advantages of the scanner in a tongue-in-cheek way. The low-budget video was produced within a few days. Wolfgang Schinagl, CEO of Auto-i-dat, was responsible on the client side, the concept and script came from Viva Kommunikation and it was produced by On Air Productions, Malans.

Doctors mobilize against tobacco advertising and sponsorship

Nine medical associations, along with the Federation of Swiss Physicians (FMH), jointly issued a call on Friday to members of Parliament for an effective tobacco products law.

The Council of States Committee for Social Security and Health (SGK-S) will be discussing the new Tobacco Products Act (TabPG) next week. This law represents a unique opportunity to prevent young people from becoming smokers - by restricting the marketing of tobacco products. The medical associations are working together to ensure that Parliament does not miss this opportunity.

With their appeal (PDF), they are calling on the Swiss parliament to pass a law that "limits tobacco to what it should be: a product that is highly hazardous to health", which should not be advertised and whose trade should be subject to international regulations. "So that your children do not become our patients!" This slogan, launched in Bern, reminds doctors that they treat patients suffering from tobacco-related illnesses and restrictions on a daily basis.

It is no coincidence that tobacco advertising is aimed at young people, according to a press release: six out of ten people are still minors when they start smoking. Anyone who starts smoking before the age of 20 has a significantly increased risk of becoming addicted to tobacco. The presidents of the participating professional associations and the FMH are therefore calling on the Swiss parliament to assume its responsibility for young people by agreeing to a comprehensive ban on advertising and promotion of tobacco products.

Advertising alliance: joint venture is called "Admeira

The joint marketing company formed by Ringier, SRG, and Swisscom will operate under the name «Admeira» and plans to begin operations on April 4, 2016.

The name "Admeira" is composed of the English term "advertising" for advertising and the word "meira," which means "target" in Romansh. The company name thus combines a term from Romansh, which is deeply rooted in Swiss culture and stands for solid values, with the global, modern word "advertising." "The search for a suitable company name with a high degree of identification and at the same time a strong statement was a great but exciting challenge," says Martin Schneider, CEO of Admeira. Schneider adds: "The name must differentiate itself, function independently of language, and be independent and memorable. We are very pleased to have hit the bull's eye with the brand 'Admeira', which fully meets all our requirements."

By bundling the marketing of the media offerings of Ringier, SRG and Swisscom, Admeira aims to offer advertisers networked communications via the best and widest-reach media platforms in Switzerland and thus a Swiss response to competition from foreign advertising companies. Admeira's stated goal, according to the statement, is to sustainably strengthen the Swiss advertising market and media center in the face of globalized competition. The company's services would be open to all advertising clients, publishers, agencies as well as other providers of advertising inventory "at fair and market-driven conditions."

The operational launch of Admeira is planned for April 4. The company will then appear on the market for the first time under the new brand. The designated CEO of the planned joint venture with over 280 employees is Martin Schneider, previously CEO of Publisuisse. The designated Chairman of the Board of Directors is Marc Walder, CEO of Ringier.

Planned launch uncertain

Whether the company can start operations as planned is currently open. The joint venture between Swisscom, SRG and Ringier is being harshly criticized, particularly by publishers and the Swiss Media Association, and is being fought through the courts. According to the critics, the alliance endangers media diversity in Switzerland and leads to an uneven playing field in the industry. The complaint, which the association together with Tamedia filed this week with the Federal Administrative Court, is pending (Werbewoche.ch reported). The publishers assume that this will have a suspensive effect - the operational start of the company could be delayed for up to a year pending a court decision. (pd/hae)

Last but not least: dead people with the right to vote

A powerful campaign shows that those in the U.S. who need stricter gun laws the most are already dead. Nevertheless, you can still vote for them in the upcoming elections.

Over 30,000 people are killed by firearms in the USA every year, and another 70,000 are shot and injured. In the presidential election, they would probably vote for candidates who advocate stricter gun laws. Statistics clearly show that a society does not become safer when all individuals are armed to the teeth. The problem is that those who are dead can no longer have a say. Even if they would like their posterity to change the situation. The "Ghost Vote" campaign cleverly communicates this fact. On the portal Ghostvote.com living people can give and dedicate their voice to firearm victims. Simple, but effective. The website was promoted in mid-March with a guerrilla campaign (pictures below). The campaign was created by Grey New York. (hae)
